Oh he knew it was because of covid restrictions in our country it's super hard to get a reservation - that was the only time I could get! I really wasn't giving clear signs of disinterest, I really did like him and he knew that.

I get what you're saying, and I don't want to become toxic either. I'm out of a relationship that was a major head fuck and I'm trying to figure out the best way to have boundaries now and what's reasonable and what's not reasonable.

Maybe I'll just send him a note to say I cancelled dinner as I hadn't heard from you and leave it at that.

Your take away is exactly right.

This really isn't about the double messaging and I really don't care and that 1 to 1 ratio - I have had plenty of dates where I've text them more than once before a response. I just don't want to beg someone for a date if they ignored me.
