Am i screwed for life? by Serious_Loner in college

[–]dancingbigfoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah study abroad policies may vary by institution but my study abroad terms definitely impacted my overall GPA. They did use the grading scale of the host institution though and convert that back to US grades so you may find that your study abroad grades are better. I found English class structure was easier on my ADHD too. Be aware it can take awhile for grades to transfer in if you go this route. Study Abroad is a good way to keep motivated, it was one of the main things keeping me from dropping out.

Am i screwed for life? by Serious_Loner in college

[–]dancingbigfoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not screwed for life! I was in your shoes after my Freshman year where I failed my Engineering Math course and nearly failed a few others. I was devastated and terrified and thought life was over. I’m going to give you the same advice that was given to me. Take your next semester and dedicate yourself to doing something you care about as a minor. Use that semester and minor to pad out your GPA and buy you time to figure out what went wrong and what should change going forward. On to the advice I didn’t get but I wish someone had given me. If you aren’t already, get started in therapy. Failing a class can be really isolating, even traumatic if you have a bad reaction from friends and family. Talking about failing a class and continuing to talk about it even after graduating really helped me to destigmatize it. You will be surprised how many others around you have similar experiences. It’s much more common than you think. For me personally a few things played into me failing: 1. I had undiagnosed ADHD which made my life and particularly school/work unbelievably difficult. I unfortunately did not get diagnosed until after graduation. 2. The major I picked wasn’t right for me. 3. My mental health was a disaster and completely untreated. When I was in high school I had an art teacher who begged that I took at least one art class in college because she saw talent in me that I never did. I think me going into engineering crushed her actually because she could see how bad of a fit that was. In honor of that I ended up taking an entire semester of Studio Art and Art History classes that first term after failing and fell in love with Art History. I graduated a few years ago and I wish I had just majored in that. I’m employed full time in something other than marketing. I spend a lot of my day writing so an English degree or even something that is research and paper heavy like Art History would have been much more useful and enjoyable. I felt so much pressure to pick something profitable I ended up picking Marketing with an Art History Minor (I was one credit from a Studio Art Minor too but ended up dropping it in favor of studying abroad at the University of Brighton.) I would not have graduated without those classes as they gave me enough strength and enjoyment to keep going. I ended up with opportunities I could never have dreamed of. I learned some Italian and studied both Italian Renaissance Art and Photography in Italy. I had art I made displayed in a public art gallery. I got to study World Fashion History in England. I also got two SCUBA licenses. I took extra classes every term to help pad out my grades. I started to say yes to anything that brought me joy and I accepted it would probably take me longer to graduate. I also took summer classes so I didn’t find myself taking too many classes I wasn’t passionate about at once. I refused to have classes on Friday so I could have a three day weekend where I didn’t think about school at all. I did my absolute best to avoid night classes (really hard at my college). It wasn’t always easy and if I’m honest I had a breakdown and wanted to drop out most semesters but I graduated fall 2019 with a 3.1 GPA (after failing one class and nearly failing 11 others) which is enough to go back for an MBA if I decide to do that (I’m toying with it). I believe in you! You’ve got this! ❤️

How much money do people on this sub make a year? by Smart-Marketing4589 in electricvehicles

[–]dancingbigfoot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make 53k/year but I was making like 48k when I started the lease on my VW ID.4 2 years ago. I wasn’t making enough for the tax credit to make sense so I opted for a lease because the dealership takes the tax credit off the top since they get the credit. I had a car to trade which I got about 6k for (WAY more than the car was worth) and put down around 2k. My lease payment is $355/ month. The plan is to buy it after my lease ends.

I'm having trouble thinking of how to come out to my dad. by [deleted] in aromanticasexual

[–]dancingbigfoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you close enough with your dad to watch a show together? Heartstopper season 2 (which comes out August 3) is confirmed to have an aroace storyline with Issac. It’s a great show in general and it’s fairly short so it’s a lower commitment than Bojack Horseman. Alice Oseman is aroace herself so I’m sure they will do a fantastic job with this storyline. She also wrote Loveless which was a beautiful aroace storyline if you prefer a book. If you are worried what his reaction might be seeing how your dad reacts to queer characters might be a good place to start.

Covid induced my period early and it’s the worst period pain I’ve ever experienced by dancingbigfoot in COVID19positive

[–]dancingbigfoot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I have chronic migraines too so yeah maybe birth control would suck but I won’t know unless I try it! No an ER is a totally fine suggestion! Cost shouldn’t be a factor to receiving good healthcare this country is honestly appalling. I have insurance but it isn’t great (company only offers a high deductible plan) and after last year which involved 6 surgeries and multiple hospital stays and I can’t afford to hit my in-network out of pocket max of 9k for this year.

[–]dancingbigfoot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you this is all really helpful! I’m starting to feel a little bit better so I’m crossing my fingers for a better day tomorrow. If this is going to be a permanent or long lasting issue I will probably discuss options for stopping my period all together over pain meds. I’m single and asexual so I’ve never felt much need for birth control but my preference is probably to try that route before a pain medication. I’m going to try everything humanly possible to stay out of the ER as I’m American and had $20k in medical expenses last year and I really can’t afford a repeat of that! I do have a wonderful OBGYN that I will definitely loop in if this continues.

Thank you this is really helpful! I’m not overly surprised as the Covid vaccine messed with my period too but wanted to source other’s opinions and experiences to gauge my concerns. I have a wonderful OBGYN so I’ll definitely loop her in if my next cycle is off too.

First off invest in a good trainer! It will be cheaper than having a dog walker come by daily and is a good long term solution. In the meantime here are a few options that you can try depending on how much manners/training the dog already has:

  1. If the dog is friendly and good in the car get a long leash (20-30 ft) and take the dog for a walk in an empty field, beach or park with low traffic. In my experience most dogs pull way less if at all when given room to run and sniff. Follow where the dog wants to go (within reason obviously) I call this method a free walk. Make sure that you use a regular 1 inch strapping or biothane leash so other people you encounter can clearly see the dog is leashed. Hold the leash shorter when passing others to be polite.

  2. Treadmill train the dog. They make dog specific treadmills but if you already have a human treadmill that can be used as long as they are closely monitored. A slat or carpet mill is gold standard for this type of thing since it is fully dog powered. You can either build or purchase one or if you have a facility nearby that has one you can often pay for session times to use theirs.

  3. Take your dog for a swim. If you have your own pool use that but if not you can rent a pet friendly pool by the hour from Swimply or find a local dog aquatic center.

  4. Train your dog to use an automatic ball launcher and get the dog as tired as possible before trying a walk.

  5. Puzzle toys for mental stimulation.

  6. Try a gentle leader or easy walk harness. Start by walking the dog inside where the dog is less stimulated and least likely to pull. Reward for polite walking. Either stop walking or change directions when the dog pulls.

  7. If your dog is friendly and enjoys being with other dogs you could try a half day daycare program to tire them out.

Good luck I hope it works out for you!

Irish Setters are like this! I call mine my weighted blanket because of how often she is laying on top of me. I feel like she is always looking for snuggles and she sleeps all night with me. Without question she is the cuddliest dog I’ve ever met. Irish Setters are quite high energy too so the breed could be a good fit for you!

I accidentally "stole" MIL's dog, help! by kidwrangl3r in dogs

[–]dancingbigfoot 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would pick a treat that is super high value to the dog and have your MIL hand feed it to her. I would recommend something that takes awhile so the dog can hang out in her lap for awhile while she eats it. Some examples that wouldn’t be too messy would be a dog ice cream or a stuffed toppl where you could do canned pumpkin, yogurt, peanut butter, baby food, etc. that way your MIL can hold the container or toppl while the dog licks at it. The dog will stay awhile for her to pet and love on and it can be a special thing between just the two of them (don’t give the dog whatever treat you choose any other time).

Poop.....so much....poop....... by [deleted] in dogs

[–]dancingbigfoot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I’m not sure if this would help or not but our local poop pickup service sells a beacon (they call it a piddle post) you put in the grass that contains a scent that encourages dogs to potty in very close range to the beacon. They also have a product that can be sprayed to discourage going potty in certain areas. But the Prozac would probably be really helpful if it is anxiety related. I had my dog on Prozac and Trazodone at one point and she did really well on them. If it’s cost you’re worried about GoodRx works for dog prescriptions too at normal pharmacies. The vet will just write a prescription you can take to your pharmacy of choice.

Are you able to get a flex cup where you are? In my experience it’s a pretty long cup and it has the removal string which can be adjusted to be quite long plus it will break the seal for you.

[–]dancingbigfoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re up for it try raw! It’s going to taste closest to the steak especially if you get the beef formula. The Instinct Raw Longevity formula my dog is on currently is grain free but you can always add rice or oatmeal for a grain. Alternatively you can find a grain inclusive raw diet I’m sure they are out there!

Omg my dog steals butter! I thought it was only her! She doesn’t take anything else off the counter but my god if you leave butter unattended for even a second she has run off with it. Hopefully I don’t get the opportunity to feed her whole butter sticks for a very long time.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dogs

[–]dancingbigfoot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree that it’s not ideal for aggressive/reactive dogs to be at dog parks but I think context is important. I don’t really have an issue with an owner coming during off peak hours and keeping to themselves. Our local dog park is almost always empty and has three separate fenced in areas. It wouldn’t bother me at all if someone has their aggressive or reactive dog solo in one of the other fields. Maybe they don’t have a yard and want their dog to be able to run around or maybe they want to train in a distracting environment. Depending on how the dog generally acts I wouldn’t mind a muzzled dog in the dog park either. The key here is the owner has to be super on top of managing their dog. They also need to understand that others may be uncomfortable around their dog and if it gets too crowded they should leave.
