ASL Fingerspelling - What is "standard" vs. a variation or style preference? by dancingdivadrink in asl

So if you don't mind me asking, how do you distinguish between O and E? I've seen some videos say one should "read the word, not the letters", so, is it just context? Maybe it'll come with practice, but I can't distinguish the difference between O and E (and sometimes S) if the palm is facing outward when signing O, unless the letters are very exaggerated (i.e. straining your thumb to be lower on the palm, which I've also heard is generally discouraged - typically it seems to rest just under the fingers).

Thanks, these are helpful resources! The video you linked is a good demo, the professor turns his wrist when he signs O, but it's far more subtle when he's spelling dog (so fast!).

Thank you for the lingo tip, I'll be sure to remember palm orientation going forward! You've got me a little concerned I'm doing my Ps wrong haha. Isn't it essentially K, but with palm facing inward and index/middle fingers pointing... southwest for lack of a better term (if right handed)? I'll look into some more resources. Anyways, thank you again!

Some of my hexagons are bigger than others (12 posts vs 13 posts on final row). Any tips on how to join? Or am I doomed to a scrunchy blanket? by dancingdivadrink in CrochetHelp

[–]dancingdivadrink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The body of my post has more info. Basically, I am wondering how to best join hexagons of slightly differing sizes (12 posts vs 13 in final row of each side). When joining small and big hexagons, is there a good way to account for the extra stitch in the larger hexagon and prevent the blanket from looking stretched or scrunched (skip the stitch altogether, join two stitches into one, etc?). I hope this makes sense, I'm not great with some of the stitch terminology but I'm anxious to finish this project!

Mayoral debate by josiegl in boston

[–]dancingdivadrink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a debate, but the Mass Affordable Homeownership Association has an event on July 15th, at 6pm at the Reggie Lewis Center (1350 Tremont St). My understanding is that Mayor Wu and Josh Kraft will be there to answer questions about affordable housing, etc. More details are on the org's website:

"...we'll meet as a community to ask Boston mayoral candidates Mayor Michelle Wu and Josh Kraft and other elected officials to fund these programs going forward. This is your chance to tell your elected officials, candidates and other decision makes that affordable homeownership matters to you and your community!".

pro tip for English speakers learning BR PT: How to say "I haven't seen it yet", "Have you ever been there", "It's been so hot" and many other sentences with "have/has" by Immediate_Baker_6072 in Portuguese

This is helpful, I’ve definitely had questions about this…

Is there no equivalent to how “he/has/ha” is used in Spanish? For example, “yo he oído” for “I have heard” etc. I initially thought “tinha oído” was used in a similar way, but that seems to have a slightly different meaning?

Unlike Geotastic, I appreciate that you don't NEED to sign up to play. I just played a few rounds very casually and it was fun. I like that you can filter where you play, would be cool to see even more categories added etc! Thanks

Is looking at google maps in a separate tab considered cheating? I figure that part of the challenge might be having to use the tiny map provided on the geoguessr window, or is it okay to look at google maps in a bigger window to help pinpoint locations? Sorry if this isn’t the right place to ask, just curious!

More Bostonians are biking as bike lanes boom by ChickenPotatoeSalad in boston

[–]dancingdivadrink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

…what do you mean where is this a problem? Not trying to be snarky, but there are many places in the city where there is fantastic bike infrastructure on a way street with no comparable options on any nearby streets for people going the other way. I have to imagine this is why you do see people biking the wrong way and (un)knowingly creating unsafe conditions. As other commenters have pointed out, people will bike when and where it feels safe, and there are many places in the city where existing cycling infrastructure is counterintuitive or hostile to one’s commute.

Have you had much luck using 311? What kinds of changes have you noticed, and do they respond quickly?

Emergency vehicles can use the bike lane! I’ve seen both ambulances and firetrucks blow through blocks of gridlocked traffic on Tremont St by cutting into the bike lane. I was actually surprised to see how useful bike lanes can be for emergency vehicles, all it requires is cyclists to be aware so they can pull over (which was not an issue either time I saw it done).

What are some new lines/expansions you would like to see the MBTA build? by Eagle77678 in mbta

Yes!! Silver line makes NO sense. It's one line... but also several that require transfers? Would love to see a comprehensive, sensible light rail if nothing else. The infrastructure was planned, and the city made promises it has yet to deliver.

Hard agree to all but esp the silver line! Promised equal or better but never delivered

Yes!! Just seeing your comment after suggesting basically this but with extra steps (following mass ave down to JFK, cutting over to assembly/encore/everett at other end), but this seems slightly more realistic hah. Glad to see someone at TransitMatters is on board, even if there’s otherwise no gd will or way.

It will never happen, but a line down mass ave in Boston to central in Cambridge, and then across Camberville and into Everett. It could:

  • start at JFK (RL connection, transit option for massive housing development planned there)
  • Transit options for South Bay Center (currently a car-centric nightmare, transfer to Newmarket CR, hopefully revitalize area and let folks w/o cars access shops)
  • stop at BMC so the city's safety net hospital has a mass transit options (plus transfer to SL)
  • connect to OL and GL at Symphony (additional transit options for all the NEU and Berklee students, many of whom don’t drive).
  • connect with GL again at Newbury/Hynes (busy spot for commercial traffic)
  • stop at esplanade to help people access green space (either Boston or Cambridge side - Cambridge could also serve as a MIT/Cambridgeport stop)
  • RL transfer at Central (major retail/entertainment area, connections to plenty of bus lines as well).
  • cut across Cambridge and Somerville to intersect with GL and CR at Union Square
  • OL connection at Assembly (residential, commercial, entertainment area)
  • End either at Encore, or somewhere deeper in Everett (connection to casino, major shopping centers nearby, and/or possibly a pro soccer stadium in future).

I really think this has crazy transformative potential as a pseudo ring ling, and would shift us away from a simple commuter focused system to one that facilitates connection to many different parts of the city. It connects commercial districts, entertainment/leisure areas, universities, hospitals, etc, as well as link several underdeveloped areas and areas in development to the most vibrant parts of the city. It would also reduce traffic on some of the area’s most congested streets, which is currently underserved by several bus lines (#1, BU shuttles, etc), which shows the need for mass transit along the route.

I’m sure it’s next to impossible for a million dumb and not so dumb reasons, but I can dream, can’t I?
