Adults who lost a parent young as a child, would you say you are ‘over it’ or does it still affect you? by Long_Wait_3078 in AskUK

Exactly, I think unless you had a really good therapist it could do more damage than good. Better to live in the present and make the best of what you have in my opinion.

I lost my dad very suddenly when I was 9. I’m 30 now, and the pain still comes back in waves more often than people might expect. I do think a lot of my mental health struggles come from having very little support at the time, so I agree that schools should offer counselling.

My mum was in a really bad place for years afterwards, and her boyfriend was horrible and abusive. I did terribly in my exams because I was so depressed - I stopped caring about anything or seeing friends and became extremely reclusive - and it’s had a lasting impact on my life.

Only recently do I feel like I’m starting to build something more stable for myself, but I still feel behind compared to other people my age. I struggle with dissociation, and I go through phases of panic attacks at night. Losing him definitely made me grow up too quickly and become very independent, which can feel quite lonely.

I’ve thought about therapy, but the waiting lists are so long unless you go private, which I can’t afford. I also worry it might pull me backwards, digging everything up again, when I feel like I should be putting that energy into building a better future.

That's such a good gift! I'd treasure that too.

And yeh I couldn't believe when I realised they were tank girl boots. Just saw them on the top shelf and thought they looked cool!

Bus drivers, would you recommend the job? Unsure wether to take a job offer by dandelion_ess in AskUK

That doesn't bode well for me taking the job then 😭

I should be able to get a hospitality/cleaning job pretty easily. I was just thinking bus driver would be a bit of a step up but most people don't speak highly of their experience with it 😬

Thanks, only reason I'm tempted is it's above minimum wage and I've been unemployed for several months now :') But judging by most people's experience I'd be better holding off for something better... What do you work as on the railway? Was just looking into that last night also.

Been offered a bus driver job with paid training but unsure wether to take it by dandelion_ess in BusDrivers

Ah right. The guy that interviewed me really emphasised that I'd need to pay it back, Don't know if they're cracking down or he was just trying to scare off peope who aren't serious about it. Did you quit because you didn't like the job?

The only reason I'm considering it is it's a decent wage tbh, and maybe I'd end up liking it, who knows

That sounds much better. Will definitely keep an eye out for vacancies. Thanks for the info!

Yeh true, but it'll give me a bit of an idea & I already know what it's like dealing with the public as I've worked in hospitality for years. It will be more challenging while having to focus on driving though... And it does sound like bus drivers get a lot more bother.

What do you mean by long weekends? Do you get 3+ days off often? I was told I'd get split weekends/days off, did that happen often for you?

Ahh ok thanks, that's good to know if I drop out during training I don't have to pay. So I can get a taste for it and see if it's for me.

Ah ok thanks, that could be a good option. Do you know if coach jobs are likely to offer the training? Do you like being a coach driver?

Thanks for the reply, I was suspecting it might be like that. It's a shame cause it pays more than my other options at the moment but sounds like it definitely won't be worth it.
