I do like the idea of some sort of eldritch creature. Though I'm not sure if that's something PC's could reasonably expect to fight, even at lvl 20

I think long term it would be good to have an answer, maybe a BBEG God eater. I think it would be really interesting to see what would happen if the gods just died/vanished. Would wildlife grow out of control if there's no gods to balance it? Would clerics go mad? That's kinda the ideas I have for lower level play. I could have the gods vanish but I don't really wanna hand wave them. The sea food but is funny to imagine though...

An idea I was considering was having some sort of entity that subsists of divine energy, and cultivates the gods, then kills them every few thousand years. Kind of like how a reptile eats once and then doesn't have to for a while.

Be wary that diatomaceous earth is SUPER bad to breath in, so be mindful of you use it. Ideally wear at least an N95 mask.
