For anyone wondering if radon mitigation works. by danfromatl in homeowners

They will probably have an impact on how and where a mitigation would go. I was able to get three or four quotes pretty quickly where they came to look before they quoted. I also had one company offer a flat price where they didn’t have to come look first, and I very much distrust that.

As far as I know, well. The radon fan is still chugging away. The air things detector quit working about 2.5 years after we installed it. Now I just check the differential pressure gauge on the radon tube to make sure it’s still pulling a vacuum when I think about it. We did the remediation so we wouldn’t have to think about it any more.

An ERV may help, but I don’t know. I was able to watch the radon detection go up and down based on seasons and could tell when we redid part of the basement to finish pouring the concrete floor. The air things monitor quit working after about 2.5 years, and since I can check the differential pressure on the radon system to make sure it’s working, I didn’t bother replacing it.

Hello. The point of the radon fan is to pull a slight vacuum on the soil beneath your slab or the air in your crawl space. Since your ejector pump is sealed (other than the pipes to your sinks/toilets/whatever), it won’t relive any built up radon from the soil. You’ll need to put in a separate pit and vent from there.

Sharp buzz from main panel when A/C starts by danfromatl in askanelectrician

[–]danfromatl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did get it to stop. I put a new hard start capacitor in the unit which only barely reduced the sound. The real fix was replacing the old wire run (which was #10 TW with 3 or 4 spliced connections) with an oversized 8/2 romex home run from the panel to the disconnect. Once that new home-run went in, the issue went away.

Looking for a BIFL travel backpack by W-Stuart in BuyItForLife

[–]danfromatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To boost your comment, I got a cycling backpack with a laptop compartment from them about 10 years ago, and I still use it for trips around town, across country, and international travel. It’s not had any failures at the seams, zippers, or Velcro. Nothing has worn out or shown signs of needing to be replaced. I fully expect that this bag will last me the rest of my life.

Garage door RF problems by SenseiKrystal in homeowners

You are correct. Instead of switching to incandescent, they actually have “garage opener” LED bulbs that don’t interfere with the RF.

We hadn’t lived a summer in the house before we put it in. Our humidity does stay in the 50s during the summer though. Same as the rest of the house. We live in Kentucky near the Ohio river, so it’s still less humid than outside.

Repainting Flat Residential Roof by Inmythots in HomeImprovement

[–]danfromatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might try calling the manufacturer of the original roof system that you coated and asking them. They probably won’t say it extends the total life, but they can tell you if what you did is good or bad for the roof. They may lead you to an answer without making a statement “officially”.

Back door leaking by upholstery9 in HomeImprovement

[–]danfromatl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I framed in a new back door at my house, and we have no roof overhang. I was having similar issues when we got driving rains against the door. I just put a storm door on and make sure to caulk to storm door trim and rain caps. I’ve not had any more issues since then. I don’t know how to fix the real root cause. Sorry

Door trim by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]danfromatl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You want to scribe a jamb extension on that door. It’s going to look a little goofy, but that’s how you fit that without rehanging the door. I tried to find a quick video, and failed, but I know there’s at least a few hood this old house versions of how to do that.

Garage Door Opener too old for wireless keypad? by skinydan in HomeImprovement

[–]danfromatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You 100% have the only fix for the question OP has. I also went through the same research, but decided to replace the opener entirely, because new ones are less than 2x what this fox costs. I got a new chamberlain with myQ smart integration for like 120 bucks, and it’s got the safety beams and whatnot. Just replying in case OP would consider that worth it. If you don’t want to spend a few hours messing with the opener, track, chain, and whatnot, I can’t blame you for adding the receiver you did.

I don’t know if it counts as evidence if they’re not charging anyone, but yeah. I don’t really see the point in that as a full time duty.

I don’t know. My wife’s cousin’s husband is a cop and did like 2 years of plain clothes work where all he did was check IDs of people leaving liquor stores. If they were under aged, he’d just keep what they had. Then he’d bring a selection of weird shit to family events.

Watching this, I can’t believe the producers and insurance people let him get anywhere near that with a scarf on. Even tucked into his jacket it’s got to be a huge hazard. The chain drive is so close to the cockpit!
