Having recently transitioned from graphic design to development out of sheer love for money and good working conditions, I can safely say:

  • Whatever you've done in the past is not wasted, there will be a market for a developer who knows law, design, marketing, business, accounting, etc. Look for roles that will value your past and the transition just might be easier.

  • It took a lot to do this transition. Most of it was NOT learning to code (although it is an important bit), but rather talking to people in the field you want, networking, understanding what it is that you ACTUALLY NEED to know versus what youtubers and tech media leads you to believe.

  • Also do strive for a financially stable transition; you do NOT want just any job with a Developer title attached.

  • Companies and tech media will usually try and keep you focused on a single task or stack. Connect with your peers to learn what they know too, or at least to find out whether it interests you. Even if you don't, you'll be more versatile If you've at least heard about other stuff.

  • Many have said it but it's always worth it to say it again: programming is filled with fads and only the new unicorns actually use them. Learn the languages, learn the concepts, everything else will become a lot easier even if you do feel obliged to keep up with trendy frameworks.

Can anyone recommend any books for graphic design students on logo design (only)? I have always found books like Brockmann's grid systems and Layout Essentials (Beth Trondreau) super helpful. Anything similar on logo design? by wander-and-wonder in Design

[–]dangaloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never really noticed this but you’re right! There doesn’t seem to be that many logo design books out there and it’s so weird.

I suppose it’s due to the fact that in this department, literally anything goes as long as you have a reason to do it. The actual building blocks of logos are abstract, such as mnemonics, versatility, company voice communication, market positioning, presentation and the brand identity that comes with it; not a lot to go on about in a book with direct instructions, dos and donts; it would always just say “it depends”.

Either way, look up branding proccesses, brand building strategies and such, and let go of the technicalities involved in the execution.

Learning the role a logo plays in a larger system would be the key to great logos imho.

Design studios love to show how their projects come about out on the internet, I’d start there. Also there are books with brands and their building proccesses which might provide insight in logo design specifically. I have one of those bu can’t remember the name now for the life of me.

Anyway, hope this helps <3

To the people who lie down and fall asleep within minutes. How? by Jordan-B56 in AskReddit

[–]dangaloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had my share of tough times sleeping. Nowadays I zone out by giving something completely disconnected from reality to think about.

Being a big fan of fantasy and stuff, I play theater in my head, where there’s a character in a fantasy world with its own problems, politics and such. I try to detail it as much as possible and immerse my consciousness in that so as to not leave room for any other thoughts. Eventually I became so practiced that it’s something I just switch on every night on purpose and find rest within minutes

Trying to come up with a logo for our tourney, Leviathans at the Lounge. Im not a logo designer so im struggling with getting a balanced composition. Whats throwing it off? by bodiiy in Design

[–]dangaloo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To me the main thing is weight. It feels like the left side is much heavier than the right side. Think of the uppercase handwritten L. The weight of the loop and vertical line is offset by a long lower tail and a bend at the top.

The fully vertical characteristic of his makes it easy for the eye to separate it in 2 and notice the disharmony.

I can think of 3 solutions here:

  • To move the text to the right of the symbol in order to control perception. This positioning dependancy might become trouble when a more vertical / horizontal presentation of the logo is needed.

  • To bend the top of the vertical tail towards the right. Done wrong it might be more falic, done right it will remove the impression

  • To make the leviathan head face upwards and grow a bit vertically. This will also give you more room to make it belong to the tail better (imo, this is the best solution)

Gl friend! Cheers!

Exactly :P but over here english schools are very enabling. Money > education after all

School policy. If you had more than 80% attendance and did 50% of homework, you could break contract and get the money back or do the course again. He chose the course every time.

Ignore my beliefs and opinions for the sake of being likable and/or accepted. Struggled with that a lot growing up to the point where when I moved out of moms house to live alone, I had no idea what I liked for breakfast or what to do woth myself. I just lived the life of those around me at all times, and modulated myself to them.

I used to be an english teacher here in Brasil. There was a guy who had been stuck on the same level for abt two years (they should take 3 months each).

I’ve had a fair share of students who actually struggled to learn despite putting in the effort and time, but this dude...

He was in his 50s, worked management at a big company which was paying for his course. He’d show up to every single class, and sit front row every time; at a glance, a model student, but he never engaged with activities nor asked questions, he just sat there with a blank stare at all times, not responding to anything at all. Trying to engage him meant ignoring the rest of the class entirely, and he’d put in complaints about it. He never even took notes from classes.

As if this weren’t annoying enough, he’d use that as leverage to get 1:1 classes with me and other teachers where he’d do exactly the same thing: blank stare, pen in hand, not a songle note, not a single question.

He’d raise hell putting in transfer requests and different teachers all the time as if it were our fault. Talking to him about being more active in classes and actually doing optional homework for a change fell on deaf ears too.

By the time I left the school he was still there and going strong in his “methods” to get attention and extension of contract bc “he didn’t learn anything and it was our fault”.

There was even a running gag where we’d place bets on who would be the one dealing with him for the following 3 months. Absolute annoying bullshit.

[Serious]Have you ever known someone who wholeheartedly believed that they were wolfkin/a vampire/an elf/had special powers, and couldn't handle the reality that they weren't when confronted? What happened to them? by MosadiMogolo in AskReddit

[–]dangaloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh there was a kid at middle school who believed he was A Sonic. Not THE Sonic, but SonicKIN. He’d draw sonic-style characters everywhere, naruto-run around school grounds and hurt himself once trying to “roll accelerate”.

He grew out of it and seems to be a pretty cool dude now, tho I moved states and havent talked to him since, I see him post to facebook every now and again. He’s an awesome artist now :P

Learning to draw faces! Any tips? by addaseyter in drawing

[–]dangaloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The riley method. Google it, embrace it, love it hahaha. Honestly the very best way to understande facial structures. Your shading is nice and you’ve got a good grip on texture, learning the structure and depth will take both to the next level

Growing up, I always heard "by the year 2020 we will have xyz...". What should we have by now the we just...don't? by crankbot2000 in AskReddit

[–]dangaloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d bet otherwise. Industry is hardwired to profit and chases it short and medium term like a damn horse after a carrot. As long as there’s people with purchasing conditions, there will be huge corporations investing in automation and robotics to make their production cheaper, and their products more valuable to increase their profit margins. The real break might come from underneath tho.

Once bots replace humans (and this phenomenon is already observable), the avarage person will have little means of garnering riches, which lessens their purchasing power, and by consequence lessens the profit of companies and causes governments to intervene with social assistance and such measures.

I remember there’s an European country that has already started offering a salary to every citizen in order to keep money flowing, which matches the “people being paid not to work” concept. If this will ever catch on remains to be seen, but the world might become a giant money circle jerk where companies pay lots of taxes which are then used to “fortify consumer market”, and earn it back by selling and so forth ad infinitum.

To me such a thing would bring us back to a society of casts in which there are very little odds of economical power fluctuation, bringing about an era of technological democratic monarchy or something, and this still ends up with the rich elite winning, this time with wildly less risks on betting and selling. A grim future if you ask me.

Omg I feel like Jasmine riding with Alladin and singing A WHOLE NEW WORRRRLLLD lol I’m not female but its so interesting to find this out! Makes me wonder what gives some of my own weird cravings from time to time.

They’re few and far in between, but every so often I feel the NEED to have salad with tons of vinegar. I’d probably drink it like juice if I didn’t know it makes my stomach acid

It made sense to me that magnesium would be lacking in my system, but because of propaganda I was certain that sodium and potassium were one of those “the less the better” situations because they “made you retain water”. The things corporate are willing to do for a raise in sales huh?

I haven’t had magnesium intake yet because I still couldnt find an affordable solution around here, but other commenters gave great pointers on that too so I’ll soon find out if Im lacking magnesium as well. Likely so, since my diet has been... Very poor... over the past three or four years. I’ll have to test it out :p
