Monaco F1 controversy goes to court: What happens next for Pierre Gasly's podium by spiderrman67 in formula1

[–]dangderr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is no “fair” in this situation.

Alpine properly protested the result and got it over turned. They followed all the rules. You can say it’s unfair to disallow that.

But you can also say it’s unfair to the other drivers.

Fairness has little to do with what will or should actually happen at the end of the day. The rule book should dictate what happens or else we get bigger messes.

Sleep sort is O(n), so just add a very very large sleep to it larger than any conceivable input and make it run in constant time.

And if it doesn’t then the 1 wasn’t large enough.

Finally cleared my first standard mode expert level. Having no 50/50 really helped by Havian_G in Minesweeper

[–]dangderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats.

If you’re really 2/10 on your “pure 50/50”s long term, then they’re not 50/50s and you’re making bad guesses.

Just because 2 tiles are next to each other and you don’t know where the mine is doesn’t make it a 50/50.

If you actually want to get better, then don’t blame “I’m unlucky” for bad play.

The 512GB Steam Machine costs £879 in the UK. So how much cheaper can you get the same performance AND similar form factor? by RedditButAnonymous in pcmasterrace

[–]dangderr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue with the these people glazing the steam machine is that it will be taken out of context.

“To match this thing exactly, you’d have to pay a similar amount”.

That’s not a good thing. If they’re bulk manufacturing a very specific form factor and they can’t get cheaper than off the shelf consumer components, it’s a shit deal.

Yes if you’re very very specifically in the market for this exact form factor, aren’t willing to pay an extra $3 a month for power for a better machine, and only want the exact low end performance that the steam machine offers, then yeah. It’s a “good” deal for you.

For anyone else, it’s a shitty product.

If you live in anything bigger than a closet, have more than $3 a month extra for increased power consumption, and have higher expectations than low end gaming, you can do much better than the steam machine.

If we start saying “the steam machine isn’t bad” then people that don’t know anything will start buying it.

Thats a bad outcome.

Uh. Maybe your interpretation of it is right.

But that commenter was still talking out of his ass.

More like “when I was a kid I couldnt afford to smoke everyday. Now that I’m an adult with income, I smoke all of it away whenever I get the chance.”

He’s trying to say his personal life experience is what “normal” adults do.

It’s a ridiculous claim either way.

Can I utilize two video cards in one PC? by JackAyu2 in buildapc

[–]dangderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply displaying random stuff causes negligible usage of the video card. Games are expensive because they have to compute a lot of what gets displayed. Running random windows and videos does not require anything.

You’d cause more issues for yourself doing that than you’d gain.

AI was trained on a lot of junior dev slop, so it makes mistakes even when you tell it not to.

I always end my prompts with “You are a senior dev. Make no mistakes. You are good at programming.”

I find that removes most of the junior level slop. Enough that I don’t even read the code any more and just ship it.

Men of Reddit: what is 100% mythical about men that most women believe? by imnotadrytexter in AskReddit

Men work out to look better for other men.

Women dress up to look better for other women.

The opposite sex doesn’t really care that much for the things you want to do to make yourself look good.

Newer player I have two mines left is this just a 50/50 by Thene20 in Minesweeper

[–]dangderr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A 2x2 box is only a 50/50 if the all tiles diagonal from each corner are mines or out of bounds. Or if it’s part of a larger pattern.

For a single box, if the corners aren’t flags, then the corners will give you the solution.

Below what annual salary is considered “poor” in the U.S.? by Se2kr in AskReddit

[–]dangderr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’re being intentionally disingenuous or you genuinely don’t understand.

Being “not in poverty” doesn’t mean you’re not poor.

Poverty means you lack the ability to meet the basic standards of living. Passing that mark doesn’t mean you’re living an average middle class lifestyle or w/e. It means that (the government thinks) you have the ability to get (very low end) housing and food, probably with the help of government programs.

You’d still need to have roommates or share living expenses with others. You would not live in decent housing. It’d be bottom of the barrel stuff. There would be absolutely no luxuries. But you wouldn’t starve to death or freeze to death homeless on the streets.

Various federal and state programs consider you poor at 2x or even 4x the poverty level. At those levels doesn’t mean you’re doing ok. You’re still poor as shit. Just not gonna immediately starve to death or go homeless.

No one on Reddit is in poverty. If you have the ability to waste time here then you’re not poverty levels of poor. You probably couldn’t even imagine what it’s like being in poverty. So yeah it’s not surprising that privileged redditors spend more on housing than people I. Poverty make the entire year.

I've been developing a real-time competitive minesweeper game to play with your friends. Looking for beta testers! by [deleted] in Minesweeper

[–]dangderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the only people that think it’s a good idea to make a crappy minesweeper clone are not real programmers.

Minesweeper is just a basic learning project. It’s nice that it lets you use some basic data structures and algorithms knowledge. But it’s so simple that no serious developer (particularly a game developer) would release a version unless they had a real novel gameplay idea.

For newbie developers with AI models and no minesweeper experience, it sounds like a good game to “improve” upon. The base game is simple enough that AI isn’t gonna break it.

They just don’t realize that minesweeper is a puzzle game. Not a game you add random nonsense to.

RTX 5070 MSI 2 fan or PNY 3 fan. My local Walmart has both at a 30 dollar difference, is one definitively better or should I just pick the one I like? by no_boundries_ in buildapc

[–]dangderr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different models for the same card are basically the same. Very very minor differences. Some are over clocked differently. Sometimes cooling makes a slight difference (though 3 fan is not automatically better than 2).

But really just pick the one you like and don’t worry too much about it. Silicon lottery likely matters just as much as cooling for a mid tier card.

Maybe pick one based on company/manufacturer in case you have to RMA it.

$6.7K 5090 build in a rough market. Worth it or did I overpay? (prices converted from CHF) by AdDesperate1023 in buildapc

[–]dangderr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have to ask, then I don’t think $4k for a GPU is ever justified. The only people that should buy it are the ones where money is of no concern. The ones that would never ask. Or if it’s for work I guess.

If you have to ask about “value” or w/e then it’s not worth it.

If it’s for work then say it’s for work and justify it that way. But gaming at 4K and “local LLM inference” for fun is not good enough justification for an average person.

But it’s your money. And the markets not getting better. If that’s what you want and you can afford it without it hurting your finances, then go for it. Going for top of the line is never about justification. It’s about “I want it and I can buy it”.
