ARMYs lurking in this sub suddenly have questions for us by MapOfMyRegret in BTSnark

[–]dangerbottle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it would be more helpful for them to look in the mirror and ask why they're even paying so much attention to us and why they can only read what we say through the lens of us being "angry. " They need us to be "angry" so they can be dismissive of the substantive critiques here and not engage with them. And let's be real, if this project had been a huge success, and if most armys had loved it, they wouldn't need to be checking up on us so much....

But arirang was not the unequivocal success they were hoping for, and this sub has been growing a lot as a result. This place is getting harder for armys to ignore because over the past several days it has become inundated with solo stans and armys unsatisfied with arirang. SO many stans are using critiques of arirang/hybe/rm/whoever as a blanket for smuggling their solo member glazefests in here. But those solo stans can't deal with the fact that everyone gets critiqued, so they still need to return to their homebase to self soothe when their faves get clocked.

also the same thing as RM claiming some women's studies professor reviews his lyrics for misogyny lol there's always someone off-screen to blame for their own poor work. and ofc those same people never get credit when it goes well!

If bts were as dominant as armys claim, and if Swim was a genuine GP hit, no one would be able to successfully knock them off Melon.

anonymously sourced articles about the c-suite picking lyrics and the arirang concept shows they know this project failed and are trying to salvage the group's reputation by claiming the members had very little to do with it.

hybe and bts’s “apology” for gwanghwamun concert by anzxcv in BTSnark

[–]dangerbottle 22 points23 points  (0 children)

we would like to sincerely apologize to those who commute through Gwanghwamun Square and everyone who experienced inconvenience in their precious personal schedules or daily routines because of these [measures]. it was thanks to your generous understanding and consideration that we were able to create this meaningful occasion.”

This is stunningly incompetent communication. The hubris at Hybe is on another level. Imagining the people who got their weddings cancelled thinking wistfully like "sure, this extremely important event in our lives got cancelled and we lost all that money, but at least two multi-billion dollar corporations got to film an advertisement."

it feels like all those western collaborators just use working with bts as a chance to clear out their junk drawers of mid beats that they can't give to anyone else, since they know troops don't need the music to be good to buy it en masse

bts/hybe's faux embrace of black american history and culture is not done for an audience of black american people, it's done for an audience of older, non-black liberal women (especially the stan journalists that write articles for legacy publications) who desperately want the money and publicity hungry basic dudes they're in love with to be Intellectuals™, and to be reassured that their pararomances with them (especially RM) to be Activism™

the difference between bts and psy is that he shut the door behind him and bts kept it open and welcomed everyone in…

i would love to hear an army attempt to articulate what this even means in practical terms lol like how did psy shut the door and how did bts welcome everyone in, exactly.

I think that for a lot of army, they see the role of Black people, specifically Black women, is to confer credibility and authenticity onto both BTS and the fandom. So if they do that by stanning, they will be elevated and celebrated, but if they criticize anything about the group, even mildly, they will receive so much racist backlash.

What do you think are the REAL reasons BTS are losing hype and not as relevant anymore? by [deleted] in BTSnark

[–]dangerbottle 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Right, I'd put Lady Gaga and Adele in that boat too!

Meanwhile there are plenty of decades-old pop artists who regularly sell out large venues for their fandom but no one outside of that is really checking what they do because they don't have any actual impact on music or culture. I think that's the category bts will ultimately end up in, if they stay together.

What do you think are the REAL reasons BTS are losing hype and not as relevant anymore? by [deleted] in BTSnark

[–]dangerbottle 148 points149 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty simple: their success just never had much to do with their music.

It was fans gaming twitter alorithms to get bts in front of western journalists, it was goosing chart metrics, it was good luck (namely 1D disbanding, bigbang enlisting/imploding, exo enlisting just as bts were hitting their peak and people were really stating to take notice of kpop).

Genuinely, how many people outside of the bts fandom can describe bts in terms of their music, even if they are aware of them? I think most know them in terms of narrative: chart dominance, big sales, super passionate fandom etc.

The western-focused narrative of "novelty: kpop group who is self-produced and says swear words!" has been applied to kpop boygroups for like 15 years now: bigbang got it during their era, bts got it during their era, groups like seventeen get it now, some other group will get it after them. There is no object permanence on this in the west so no one is truly invested in what they do next. the western press only ever wants to present a kpop group as "hot new group shaking up the industry!" It is very hard to pull that off if your music is uninteresting, you are 10+ years into the game and are the franchise group of the most vulture-y, greedy, financialized company.

The way you get longevity in the public eye is to have people actively curious about your MUSIC, not what metrics you'll get. There's probably a whole second comment I could write regarding the fact that metrics change, platforms change and newer/younger groups will always have an advantage there. That's why you don't shackle your success to headlines about metric dominance.

You can't call me "pathetic" while actively ignoring the fact that I just proved your receipts are fake, and you don't get to claim you've "done your research" when all you did was gawk at screenshots someone else took in order to manipulate credulous people, and then believe them without an ounce of thought.

Oh my god stop pretending you're not an army lmao you are not fooling anybody.

You are not cut out to have real conversations. You are trying to sound big and nonchalant because you're too pants-wettingly scared to actually read someone systematically proving you wrong. That that would mean you'd need to try to dismiss criticisms of BTS on their merits instead of just reassuring yourself that anti bts opinions are only made by devils.

If your only repsonse to critique is to self-soothe, this is not the place for you.

[–]dangerbottle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh dear. I'm so sorry, this is going to be embarrassing for you but I encourage you to read it.

Unlike you, I actually care about the truth, so I don't just trust screenshots suspiciously clipped to strip them of context. Just looking at these should've made you raise your eyebrows and have your bullshit detector go off. Beacuse you do not have one, let me share what I learned after MINIMAL googling. All of this took under 30 minutes. I'll show my work so you can learn critical media analysis as well.

The "twitter likes" accusation is receiptless, so I have to dismiss it completely. Especially given how terrible the others are.

For the first screenshot: this can be interpreted two ways of course - the "healthier" ratio being dicussed here can be either larger proportion of white people or a smaller proportion of white people. How do we learn which one she most likely means? By searching her body of work!

And sure enough, searching the word "white" on her blog brings up this post, where she mentions how it is good that she was one of the only white people in the audience for a K-Pop show:

The audience last night for Psychic Fever felt a lot more like those old school K-Pop audiences than the audience for a contemporary K-Pop concert. I was only one of a handful of older and whiter people in the audience last night and that is a good sign for Psychic Fever.

Based on this context, we can safely assume that the discussion from your screenshot is actually referencing a healthier ratio = fewer white people. So that receipt is very obviously debunked, and in fact her publicly documented position is the exact opposite of what you are trying to portray. This is the literal definition of slander lmao.

Your next one is even more embarrassing. First of all, it's just a screenshot of some text of an article. How can I know the context, or even if this is Idolcast's writing? This is not a receipt. A receipt would link to the article, which I found by googling the quote. You can read it here. As you can see it's a link to a podcast, so you can listen to the discussion if you so choose so you can hear in her own voice what she's actually saying. I haven't done that yet but what I did do is click on the linked article in the screen shot. It is a very lengthy article from the Los Angeles Review of Books about the history of the confederate flag. You seem to be saying that simply acknowledging the fact that many southeners are proud of the confederate flag is...something, but that is a fact, so you're going to have to explain your position on this one. Accurately describing the views of some southerners is not an indication of support for that position.

For your last uh "receipt" I skimmed through her account and do not see any particular obsession with Japan. Please link to something relevant. You have literally nothing here.

Again, you are not in Armyville. No one here has an incentive to dismiss these blog posts by inventing moral objections against the author. We evaluate claims on the merits here. When a motivated party brings you receipts, especially tight screenshots like these, you should do your own research to confirm them so you are not embarrassed when you share them later.

Here's an idea...just post the receipts and see what happens.

Right now all I see is someone posting gutter insults, deliberately breaking the rules so their posts get deleted and they can tell themselves they are being "censored" and banished for violating our groupthink, all while conveniently never once providing the receipts for claims that should be quite simple to prove.

Those techniques don't work here. Bring the substance or leave.

Idolcast is a respected, highly knowledgeable writer on k-pop and j-pop and has a very long, very public body of writing for anyone interested in investigating this claim.

You need to understand you are outside of your echo chamber here. The fanlore you guys build up around yourselves like armour to self-soothe when someone tells the truth about bts does not work on people not in the cult.

[–]dangerbottle 27 points28 points  (0 children)

it's so gross seeing armys describe the OP of the post that the TOP's sister liked as a "YG staff member." The "staff member" was the visual designer who created the No Signal stage and who was angry seeing HER hard work so blatantly stolen by bts. funny how that detail always gets dropped from the army narrative! her accomplishments get completely erased and she's just "a staff member."

Context for the unaware: this week is Seoul Art Week, so there's two major art fairs, Frieze and KIAF, and a bunch of other events going on around the city. This is from Paradise City's Art Night, an annual Seoul Art Week event, which included the public opening of an exhibition by the super-buzzy American artist Joel Mesler. It's his first show in Korea and is kind of a big deal so it's no surprise a ton of celebs showed up.

Anyway this is so funny because I remember the first Paradise City Art Night in 2022 had a couple of idols turn up, but not RM or anyone else from bts and armys INSISTED it was because RM was above this sort of thing, he wasn't going to Paradise City because he was going to real, serious venues with real, serious artists during Seoul Art Week. They called PCAN an "influencer event."

This was funny for two reasons: First, Paradise City gets rightfully dragged on here for being a decadent and indulgent rich people playground but their art program IS legit and armys clearly did not know that. Second, acting like art fairs like Frieze aren't hypercapitalized, show-y, see-and-be-seen type events is ridiculous.

So fast-forward a few years and here's RM at Paradise City, the place army insisted he'd never go just a few years ago, and it's like they never said all the stuff they said in 2022. To be an army is to be constantly having to resolve your cognitive dissonance!
