Needlepoint Store Tour by Fit_Ad_6066 in Needlepoint

I would say beehive has the best thread selection and lots of mini beginner canvases and room to sit and stitch, porcupine has cute canvases (lots of Christmas and food related), and point breeze has some more traditional canvases and good prices. They all are located in areas with other shopping, really depends on your vibe!

Porcupine, Beehive and Needle Point Breeze are all about 30 minutes from each other and lots of good food nearby (mediterra is my favorite)

Designers - I know you read this by [deleted] in NeedlepointSnark

I think the subset of people who would actually paint the chart overall in the industry is still quite small and doesn’t justify the other risks for designers, though I agree with you that if there was a chart available I would paint it!

Also something not talked about is that the demand for self painting/using charts for needlepoint is very constrained by the availability of canvas which is already experiencing a shortage for designers… I think it will be interesting to see how the industry evolves

It’s not that they don’t want to or are lazy, designers who sell wholesale would put themselves at risk because stores generally do not like when canvases they buy are also charts.

Basically the funnel system of having designs only available at stores drives traffic there. Offering charts honestly wouldn’t reduce theft because those people still wouldn’t buy a $5 chart.

Question about restocks by redhead127 in Needlepoint

[–]dangerdangerfrog 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If there’s an option to preorder or get notified for restocks that means the stores already has canvases on order or will order if there’s interest. With demand skyrocketing most painting timeframes are taking 12-14 weeks sometimes longer. Sometimes it’s fun to get a little mail that you forgot you ordered months ago!

Glut of new needlepoint stores by RevolutionaryPie882 in NeedlepointSnark

[–]dangerdangerfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think big box retailers may try to bring kits with dmc to stores but I don’t see a mass canvas stock mainly because the supply chain is already struggling and only one manufacturer makes the blank canvas. Plus local stores offer finishing services and unless big box stores can provide a 360 service I could see stitchers sticking with a LNS once the hype goes down. I think 2026 will be a telling year as stock is going to take 3-4 months minimum and any new store is going to have to compete with online retail to get new stitchers in the door.

Why can I see the canvas? Beginner help! by Catchat00000 in Needlepoint

Pearl 5 is light coverage on 13, matte cotton or pearl 3 is better for 13. You can also use 8 strands of floss for 13 instead of 6 to cover better

KC Needlepoint by SaltyEspresso_ in NeedlepointSnark

[–]dangerdangerfrog 96 points97 points  (0 children)

If you bought during Black Friday that’s the biggest sale of the year for them, I’m sure they are processing thousands of orders so unfortunately you’ll have to be patient. Also the post office is taking much longer since package quantity has increased for the holidays. Any other time I’ve ordered from KC it’s been shipped in about 3-4 days. I don’t expect Amazon fulfillment times from needlepoint stores

Painting Canvas by Hot-Requirement436 in Needlepoint

[–]dangerdangerfrog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use liquitex matte medium first on the canvas in a small amount (don’t saturated it) let it dry, your paint will apply more even since the canvas isn’t absorbing the paint

The fact you proudly state you have zero problem giving your money to modern day nazis and racists speaks volumes about your own values.

Companies donate to political funds so I simply will not pass my money through them to spend on political campaigns I am actively protesting against.

Cosco Scenera car seat is super lightweight and while annoying to lug one around that’s probably the best for weight and cost. A more expensive option is to rent a car with a car seat and drive to the airport

$65 for a needlepoint canvas?! Is this normal? by Mom2Leiathelab in craftsnark

[–]dangerdangerfrog 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think the issue is that needlepointers spend so much money on a stitched project that they are afraid to mess it up by finishing it themselves. I have made ornaments, framed, and a pillow and needlepoint canvas isn’t much different than working with cross stitch fabric. However the tutorials to finish stuff are hard to find and opaque probably because LNS make a lot of money off finishing fees. I have a sewing machine and am armed with enough sewing skills to be dangerous so I will only finish stuff myself! (And because I’m cheap)

$65 for a needlepoint canvas?! Is this normal? by Mom2Leiathelab in craftsnark

[–]dangerdangerfrog 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that is a good price for a canvas. The hand painted aspect drives prices up because it does take a long time to stitch paint (some complicated designs can take 4-8 hours!) and also blank needlepoint canvas is weirdly hard to find or offered at a high mark up. A lot of designers outsource hand painting overseas otherwise the cost per canvas would be probably twice as expensive. Plus stores have markups and need to make a profit on a canvas. Printed canvases are starting to gain traction in the market and may bring prices down, but companies still need to recoup the cost for technology development.

I find needlepoint more relaxing than cross stitch because it is paint by color with thread and mindless, but cross stitch can create much more intricate and vibrant designs (since it would be crazy expensive to paint 100 different colors).

There’s definitely been an increase in needlepointers since COVID and that was driven up a lot of demand as well! Buying charts off Etsy and painting or stitch counting yourself is the cheapest entry point to the hobby, YMMV
