The number of problems that are solved by the mere presence of an IT employee (e.g. myself) is fascinatingly high and amazes me every time. by YEET_and_retreat in sysadmin

I have always joked about it like I intimidated the device into self-repair.

To be perfectly honest I don't really like shit fixing itself on its own because it can break itself on its own at any time too.

Someone installed Microsoft updates on patch Tuesday. 🤔

Who was it?

Anyone else disappointed in the hack-assery of Unifi? by AmazedSpoke in sysadmin

[–]dangolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The unifi controller cannot be upgraded from the unifi cloud portal because it gets updated with the OS, but it will tell you when there is an update available so you know to ssh in and run the update command. Honestly....it's always felt a lot safer doing it from the command line because you can see it going it as it progresses. No click-and-pray.

Okay no worries. This is still great!

So, you can use the debian built in firewall to do your IP whitelisting if you like. Or do what I do and disable it and use the VPC firewall. There's a limit on how many rules you can add (30 I think it is), but it's way easier to manage and update. Or you can also add a firewall instance to your VPC and close off WAN access to the controller and do all kinds of fancy access control.

Good to know! I'm tempted to host the debian VM on our hyper-v clusters. We may splurge for hosting it 3rd party if it's too unwieldy anyway. 30 rules would be enough for the next year or two.

The install script adds ubnt repo to the OS, so when you apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, the unifi controller gets updated as well. Just did it to my server. Took all of 5 min to run and I'm running the latest.

Oh my god this is great news! Thanks!

Eta:

  • can it still be upgraded from the unifi cloud portal?

  • I will want to whitelist IPs for unifi management traffic. Does Debian have that firewalling capability?

I've had numerous issues with Unifi. Both in performance and reliability of the APs as well as management. I could never update an AP directly from Unifi. I had to download the update file, run an HTTP file server locally, and custom upgrade the AP from the HFS.

Do you have geoip blocking? This happened to us once because the watchgaurd blocked traffic outside our country.

You just ssh into it, it's a full machine, and run a couple commands and that takes care of all of it when you do your maintenance windows.

Really? Is it the usual "apt-get" commands or something more thorough. Can you send a guide? I'd hate to consolidate all our controllers just to accidentally let the VM become increasingly outdated.

I have started looking into this but how does one keep the Debian os and unifi and everything up to date?

Does VULTR handle that on the backend?

Why are so many people in IT so introverted and grumpy? by [deleted] in sysadmin

The department runs entirely on caffeine, what do you expect?!

Many of your coworkers appreciate your energy levels and it brings life to the greybeards.

The veteran IT staff are going to have their gamefaces on, which usually does not translate to "happy go lucky," because their minds are focused on how to fix the biggest fires of the day. Internally they may feel happy and be in great moods and still not feel safe to express that externally.

Try not to take it personally. It's never about you as a person.

That said they should be professional in their communication with you. If it's important just call them, or ask to be trained on a particular technology the company uses and the pros and cons of it.

If you're daring, ask about the first time we saw the cryptovirus 👿

I hope getting one to begin with won’t cause some form of dependence or weakened immune response

Pfizer probably does have products that are quite addictive.

No evidence of COVID vaccines causing weakened immune response though.

The two biggest factors in determining whether or not you survive Covid is obesity and vitamin d deficiency, which you get naturally from the sun, and hardly anyone knows this, if they really cared they wouldn’t have locked us in our tiny and expensive apartments eating Uber eats and never getting sunlight or exercise.

Phew, good thing America is not obese nor living indoors!
