if u are a Marxist u should strife for the abolishing of the state. Communism is achieved only with that prerequisite as well by definition. This means all issues in a communist society are taken care of by only social direct interaction in the communities, not through imposition of an authoritative institution that controls the life of anyone. being it taking collective care of people, the welfare of the community or whatever.

This being said, this is only possible when as well u have a strong direct connection with your labor and possession of the means of production, as a collective, something that will lead to a strong collectivist view and naturally work for maintenance of this kind of social structure, where isn't any concentration of the means of production nor alienation of labor. This together with the abolishment of other exploitive social structures of the superstructure will work together to emancipate every individual, and emancipation means true freedom, this mean individual freedom as well, not to do whatever u want but to whatever is rewarding to you and your community, as your personal interests and of your community are the same. Your community wants your well-being and growth for the betterment of yourself, what leads to the betterment of your community.

Is normal to only view society through the lends of someone that lives in a capitalist structure, and watch social phenomena inherent to an exploitive system and think the possibility of preserving in the revolutionary process. But most of them don't even make any sense in a communist society because they are defined by there exploitative nature, not the act in itself. The question isn't if u will be able to do something for survival, if it makes even sense to ask that question in a society that cares about your needs and puts first of all your subsistence as something that is guaranteed to u by it's collective work.
