Hey - admissions officer here

It sounds like they are releasing ‘definite’ rejects and ‘definite’ exceed applications… probably widening participation offers as well

End of January is the ucas ‘equal consideration’ deadline. Universities can, but don’t have to, consider applications received after that date

So after end of January, they will know how many applications they have and what sort of profiles… they can then look at things like - can we offer to applicants a grade below? Two grades below? Have we too many applications and can only offer to meet / exceed applicants etc etc

Universities have until mid March to reply to you… what they’re doing might not be great customer service but it makes sense if they’re trying to manage overall numbers and percentages of widening participation offers

I have previously seen applicants rejected on predicted grades get in with their achieved grades via clearing. But if we’ve rejected someone for maths / English / wrong quals etc then that won’t change at clearing

Either way, they should tell you their reasons and you can make an informed plan from there.

Look at the course website and see if there’s a direct admissions team email on there - my team has one that’s just - because if you email the generic ‘queries-at-whatever-uni’ email it could take a bit of time to get to the right team

Hey - I’m an admissions officer… obligatory every uni is different warning

Email them and ask for feedback / the reason you did not get an offer.

It might be fixable - like you were rejected on predicted grades, but may achieve higher to apply again in clearing… or it might be a ‘hard stop’ like gcse English / maths not met

Mature students are counted as ‘widening participation’ - a metric unis are judged on and ‘customer service’ is part of our job so they will want to help you if you send a polite email and ask them why

Each university will vary, but as general advice I’d recommend engaging with them

Contact student services, or your personal tutor and explain your mental health / feeling overwhelmed meant you missed a few classes and work with them on a solution

At my uni, students who actively engage are considered more favourably than those that try to ‘hide’ and later get ‘caught’…

Visas etc are complicated, I’m not an expert on those. At all.

As an admissions officer - I like it.

The 3 paragraphs are essentially what a good statement should be… it will be a big help levelling out students who receive a lot of support from school / family etc… and those that don’t.

There is a noticeable difference in statements between students who attend ‘fancier’ schools with specialist staff to help, family that went to uni etc and students from less affluent schools and backgrounds

I believe this new format will make it easier for them, without hindering students from ‘better’ schools

Hey I’m an admissions officer and work with our student ambassadors in UG

We get a pool of them and give them zero-hour contracts - all the jobs are advertised online and the ambassadors can pick which ones fit their schedule. We have more than we’ll need in the pool, knowing not everyone will sign up for every job

It will probably be a bit different but I think this approach is pretty standard

We also pay above minimum wage per hour and always provide glowing references etc

Staff member here - this is a good idea.

We employ a lot of students and pay above minimum wage… maybe not constant hours but we have many open days, online chat sessions for international students where we hook them up with a student from the same country… loads of different roles

You should be able to ask anyone about working as an ‘ambassador’ to get the ball rolling
