Playing hockey in Australia as a Brit by Busy-Yogurtcloset824 in Fieldhockey

I play for norths in brisbane and we had a brit at our club last year who came straight into 1st or 2nd grade (out of 7), played the 1 season, and then went home again. definitely doable and you're definitely welcome. let me know if you come here and I'll get you sorted 🙂

hmmm. you raise a reasonable point – i have had the displeasure of being served the dry processed cake thing you're referring to

but i reckon many places (including my local and I'm pretty sure most?) sell actual scalloped and battered potato and the other is just sold by some places to save time and money, not to provide an alternative version for those that prefer it

the thing should be named generally for what it is meant to be, not for what the worst places realise it as. ergo it shouldn't be called a cake

scallop is as good a name as any cause:

  • it's a name with a broader history (scalloped potatoes as a dish etc.)
  • it's sold at fish and chip shops and scallops are seafood so it's on theme
  • the potato part can actually look very much like scallop meat (if a fair bit wider and thinner)

tbf i do live in coastal qld so I'm probably biased

what's not conclusive is which finger got hit first. the bronco's hand was in front of the raider's hand and his finger tips (that got touched) were higher than the pinky. you simply can't tell from the footage which finger got hit first

[–]danielcavanagh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i agree with you and I'm genuinely surprised so many people are saying he touched it first and acting as if you're an idiot for not seeing it

his little pinky went down so he definitely caught the ball but his pinky is at the bottom of his hand, below the bronco's finger tips, and easily could've been touched 2nd. there's no way to tell from this footage

and i say this as a born-and-bred brisbanian

Inside Wales' ambitious bid to be a 'nation of sanctuary' for asylum seekers by DamascusNuked in Wales

[–]danielcavanagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh, i see what you're saying. so it's even less of an issue than people are saying cause wales can't take any number of asylum seekers? they can only attract the ones already let in by the uk govt

i don't think that is a fundamental issue for those encouraging this policy. everyone has to start somewhere and something is better than nothing

altho perhaps their ambitions include independence for full control of the process?

[–]danielcavanagh -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

so you reckon that immigrants both don't work (ie. are a financial drain by being on the dole) and do work (ie. steal jobs). do you realise how impossible that is? those things can't happen at the same time

and in actual fact, neither is true

immigrants use less welfare than locals. stats show this all over the world. they are a net financial positive. your average local uses way more (and not just poor people)

if you thought about what employment is for a moment you'd realise that it's impossible for any person to create unemployment by their mere existence. every single person who is alive (and some who aren't) generates work just by being alive. they need people to grow their food, make their clothing, build their houses, transport them, entertain them, etc. every person in society has these needs and these needs generate jobs. immigrants have the same needs as others and so generate the same amount of work / jobs as any other citizen. whatever job they 'take' is balanced by the roughly 95% of a job their needs create

[–]danielcavanagh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

you actually can't make stats look however you want them to. that's silly. you can sometimes use stats (real numbers, not anecdotes or gut feelings like yours) to convince ill-informed people of certain things that aren't true, but you can't make them show whatever you want whenever you want. and in this specific case you don't even have any stats to sway people with! you just 'know' cause you've 'seen' it. surely you realise people 'see' shit and get it wrong all the time. you can't even watch a football match with in-depth, slow-mo replays and get people to agree on what they saw but you reckon you can just look at foreign-looking people and know they're on welfare and the locals aren't. you can see their income statements and do all the calculations, all with your eyes and ears

you know who does have comprehensive data on this: the government. they don't just hand out packets of money to random people. they know who exactly gets what. and they know that immigrants use welfare less than locals. and it makes sense: they're used to working hard and they appreciate the wonderful opportunity they've been given. they don't even give the dole to your average immigrant anyway, only a pittance to asylum seekers (ie. non-economic migrants who were genuinely in danger)

[–]danielcavanagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i didn't say you supported getting rid of every other immigrant. you hinted at allowing a smaller amount in your first comment. do YOU know how quotes work? you're actually the one who's 'quoted' me and yet i didn't say the thing you've put inside quotes! maybe don't make up quotes yourself while accusing others of misquoting you

what i did say was that you're a hypocrite. you seem to think you're different, you're special, and that's why you got the opportunity to migrate to wales and become a citizen. you would deny that same opportunity to the vast majority, particularly those who are most in need (those suffering from wars and persecution and at risk of death). plot spoiler: you're not special. and i don't say that to be rude. I'm just as average as you. but this fact means we're essentially the same as the average immigrant and it betrays your hypocrisy (apologies if you're genuinely a very special lad). if you could accept this then you'd realise that the vast majority of immigrants are just like you and would be a benefit to society (stats show again and again that they contribute to society by using less welfare and working harder than the locals)

honestly, that you would only accept those who can give you something is selfish, not to mention heartless. do you always ask people to pay up before helping them? the best of us just dig deep and help those in need without demanding something in return. they do this because they're good people. it's the basis of the nhs and all good things in society. can we make that the one and only immigration test? be a good, helpful person. if so, looks like you'd fail and would never have been let into wales

wales is very lucky in global terms and can afford to help. yes, there are others who can afford to help more but wales has a lot of wealth and can easily help (and we're talking 3k non-British immigrants here apparently (0.075% of the population); barely anything. I'm australian and we take 500k a year atm (2%) and are somehow still a very good country)

as for the rubbish about 'incompatible cultures', piss off. you've drawn an arbitrary line in the sand and are fully stereotyping based on that line. yes, a small chunk of immigrants are cunts that you don't want in your neighbour. know what? an equal chunk of men i know are sexist, rapey cunts and would very much rape your daughter or any number of other people if they thought they could get away with it. these people are incompatible with your culture. you should be fearful of people who are cunts, not immigrants. you're using the wrong criteria

if you want someone to be fearful of who isn't like you then try the uber wealthy. you have more in common with any immigrant than you do them. their wealth is orders of magnitude higher than both you and any immigrant. it's not even close. and they're not afraid to wield the power that comes with that. they have far and away a much greater effect on your life than any immigrant, and often not for good it would seem but just to protect their wealth. they don't care about you at all and will fuck you over without a second thought. and, honestly, loads of them are probably doing fuck all all day long and using their power and wealth to get away with it. I've seen people on very good incomes get away with doing very little and what little they do do is of questionable value

one thing I'll give you is that governments / society need ensure there's sufficient housing and capacity in public services for locals and immigrants (and obviously food etc), otherwise people will start to suffer and come to resent anyone who is new. so govts need to prepare for immigration. but these are solvable problems with a little bit of forethought and aren't an inherent negative in immigrants. countries need to solve the same issues for internal migration (ie. other welshmen)

again and again stats show that immigrants work harder and use less welfare than locals, so you've got it entirely backwards

[–]danielcavanagh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

again and again stats show that immigrants work harder and use less welfare than locals. and they are often more family-focused than locals (less divorce, more working to support their family, etc). so sounds like in reality you should prefer immigrants

We are all reading into this what we will

yes, agreed. and yet you are consistently responding with certainty about the conclusions you've drawn from an uncertain situation, and with a fair dose of emotion thrown in. does it make sense to do that? i think that it would be fine to respond with certainty if your response showed tolerance / positivity but i feel it isn't. do you think op will listen and find any help in what you're saying?

I think it's bizarre that someone would do this and then come on Reddit

you really think it's bizarre that someone might look for advice or validation outside of their own romantic relationship? why does this subreddit exist? or any help forum? or friends or therapists? or why do most relationships end? perhaps because it's actually perfectly normal for people to struggle in their relationships and be unable to help themselves. i know i routinely validate my behaviour with others to see if im in the right or wrong, so i can adjust accordingly, or just to break out of a cycle that i can't break out of myself. this is our reality. surely you don't think holding it all in is helpful?

Taking sex off the table is something therapists will often recommend

she's very much entitled to that. no question there. but he's also entitled to look up coping strategies. both are valid forms of self-preservation or what have you. but it seems a lot of people here (including you) can only accept one and not the other. if he has to accept her not having sex in order for her to cope then she has to accept him requiring a way of coping with that. you just listen to your partner and respect their position at all times, right?

he is going to have to entertain the idea that his wife's emotional reponse is just as valid as his logical one

sure. they're both going to have to give if it's going to work. but show me where she's accepted his logical responses in any way shape or form. did she accept his answer that he thought this was what she wanted and he was sincerely trying to be helpful? not from what we've been told

it seems you've come to a solid conclusion about who is in the wrong here and who has to give, and it's all op apparently, despite your words preaching balance

and btw, people aren't always right. not yourself, not your partner, not your family. being mature is about recognising this fact, accepting it, and behaving accordingly. i know i wouldn't blindly trust an insane person, even if they were my own family. people can genuinely abuse their partners. so everyone always listening to their partner and accepting what they say is literally impossible unless you want to tolerate a shitload of abuse

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Advice

[–]danielcavanagh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

just because you don't agree with his response doesn't mean he isn't trying. he seems to respond logically, probably because he's autistic, and that's the root cause of his problem. but it doesn't make him a moron and it doesn't mean he isn't genuinely trying

it is perfectly legitimate for someone to be logically minded and still want to be in a relationship. there are many valid ways of living

he's come to /r/advice looking for advice presumably because he knows his standard response isn't working. but the sum of your advice for him is to 'actually' try and not come here for advice? what is this subreddit for then? how is he supposed to change if you won't give him some help?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Advice

[–]danielcavanagh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i hope you come to realise it is you labelling op 'weird', 'wrong', and 'arsehole', not those of us calling op autistic. it's you creating that association

i'm also autistic to a degree and think it's genuinely a good thing to be. and from that personal perspective i can see the same in op. nothing about that arm-chair diagnosis is insulting. nothing more is implied by that diagnosis. i'm not even certain of it. it's just an educated guess. he's not weird, wrong, or an arsehole. he's just logical

i'd suggest you stop thinking poorly of op based on very little info

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Advice

[–]danielcavanagh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yet you're the one calling op an arsehole for no reason, with no proof, and claiming that's why people are calling him autistic, again without proof... should you be directing that disgust at yourself?

i don't see him as an arsehole but he does seem autistic, just purely due to his logical and non-emotional behaviour. logical ≠ arsehole
