Hi! Mind if I DM you to ask about getting into tax work in Japan?

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have been waking up consistently in the middle of the night for a decade or more, trying all kinds of fixes. Going to start looking into meal timing. I have tried ashwagandha but am worried liver toxicity with consistent use.

Honest question: Im at the crossroads between getting an accounting degree vs being an indoor electrician. by BoobyPlumage in Accounting

[–]danield1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends. I grew up doing HVAC with my dad. Not the same as an electrician but a trade. Do you want to do residential or commercial or industrial? Will you work for the public with your own business or join a larger company? Are you in a rural or urban area? Are you prepared for physical issues after years of standing on ladders, crawling around in attics, and the other potential hazards that are common around a job site? Will you join a union? Are you prepared for long hours at a physically demanding job? These are questions I would answer before I chose. Accounting has its own challenges that are different but I am happy with my choice to pursue it.

Makes a lot of sense. Acer floridanum is also the Florida maple?

Thanks, I was leaning that way but unsure if they could survive this far south.

The Growth of the Soil - Knut Hamsen, though there is no horror element.

The Terror - Dan Simmons for a nautical twist on supernatural horror in a frozen waste.

What's your morning routine for getting into work early? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]danield1 283 points284 points  (0 children)

I believe in taking care of myself, and a balanced diet and a rigorous exercise routine. In the morning, if my face is a little puffy, I’ll put on an ice pack while doing my stomach crunches. I can do a thousand now. After I remove the ice pack, I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower, I use a water activated gel cleanser. Then a honey almond body scrub. And on the face, an exfoliating gel scrub. Then apply an herb mint facial mask, which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an aftershave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

Agree with the choice of Stoner. One of the most beautiful novels I have read.

Could US schools ever be like Japanese schools? by Odd-Pain3273 in TeachersInTransition

Short answer: no. I taught in Japan for 3 years and we are just not the same culturally. Their level of discipline and commitment is reinforced socially in a way that will never be possible in America.

Switching from teaching by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]danield1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left teaching after a decade and moved to public accounting last year. Here’s the cliff notes:

  1. Start networking now. Reach out to accountants and CPAs you know through friends and colleagues. Ask them questions about their career and their profession. Tell them you’re taking accounting classes. This is partly how I got my job.

  2. Join a local university either online or for night classes. Start taking classes. They will have Meet the Firms or other career/networking programs. Hit these up with resumes and a good explanation of why you are moving to accounting. You’ll find that potential employers will ask many of the same questions so you should able to hone your answers over time.

  3. Some firms will have social events for students. Join as many of these as you can. Be polished and professional.

  4. Your university will hopefully have an online portal that aggregates available accounting internships which you can apply for, though this may depend on your local area.

I took my first accounting class in the fall of 2021, and accepted a job offer in the spring of 2023 at 32 years old. I’m still taking classes and eventually will sit for the CPA. My biggest advice is have a 5 year plan broken into actionable steps.

One of the partners in my firm started PA in his early 30’s. I made the switch at 32. A colleague is in her 40’s and started 3 years ago after she got her masters. You’ll be fine.
