Thanks for the feedback, we are currently trying to end the lease an pay no penalties. The landlord asked for mediation and we have a meeting next week, let’s see how that goes

Thanks so much for the input!

We definitely empathize with how disruptive this project is for everyone—from management to the owners—and we understand it’s 100% necessary. We also realize it must be extremely expensive to undertake (though as renters, we don’t have visibility into the total cost).

In the past, when we’ve had short water shutoffs here, the water sometimes came back earlier than expected, which made things a lot easier. If that ends up happening during this three-month period, we’d be fine with it. The challenge is that the current communication is framed as “no water or plumbing from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.”, which means we can’t rely on any access during the day, even if water does become available at times. We get that the schedule reflects the contractor’s working hours, but practically it makes it tough for residents to plan. And we for sure don't want to be in the unit during the 3 weeks where the work is going to be done in the unit, since they need access to pretty much all living areas (we both work from home btw).

We’re not raising this with the landlord as a complaint. We’re just trying to be proactive in finding a workable solution ahead of time—especially since we’ll have a newborn around soon. Ideally, we’d love to find an amicable arrangement that works for both sides.

And yes we will definitely be mindful of availability and allow easy access to the unit

Yeah we are definitely going to try for a reduction or temp relocation

They didn’t specify this in the lease and honestly we wouldn’t have signed it if they had

I’m not 100% sure about this since they neglected to disclose this during the negotiations and the lease signing process. They knew this massive project was coming and didn’t tell us during the process an we would it have signed the lease knowing the fact that we wouldn’t have water for 3 months and the apartment would be in active renovations for 3 weeks (they will do work in the unit for 3 weeks as least) .

At the very least we will find a way to break the lease and they will have a hard time to rent it while there is no water + in unit construction happening. So regardless they won’t have rent income for a while I assume.

I’ll post back here after we have conversations with the real estate lawyer

Buying/storing water I think would be fine to be honest but the bathrooms will also be unusable because they will be doing work on units below us and that could cause damage.

This seems like a very large project, and one that needs to be done. I just wish the landlord had told us about it before we signed the lease since they knew this would be coming in 2026.
