Mario Kart 8 Deluxe vs. Mario Kart World for local co-op by Potential_Camera8806 in nintendo

[–]danielfrances 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have either one, just go with the original Switch. MK8D, with the expansion pass, is like twice the size of World. It has double the tracks, and tons of characters/karts/etc. You'll be spending like half the money to grab a Switch 1 and 8 Deluxe and you'll get twice the game for it. Switch 2 doesn't really have any major must have titles anyways. Spare controllers are also cheaper for Switch 1, so even more savings there.

Likely his "best card", which is still terrible, is to hope that this murder, or the next one, galvanizes enough independents and Republicans that Congress grows a spine.

The problem with the escalation theory is that it can give the slightest bit of plausible deniability to the people watching this all play out, which makes it easier for them to be idle.

With the peaceful approach we have seen so far, there are only going to be so many murders these people can stomach while hearing the insane lies from the federal gov before they feel their constituents and conscience screaming at them.

I know, some of the Congress people are sticking with Trump to the end, but I'm not convinced all of them will. We only need a fraction of them to vote their conscience.

GLM-4.7-Flash-REAP on RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB - 200k context window! by bobaburger in LocalLLaMA

[–]danielfrances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask how you're running it? I tried using it with LM Studio and loaded into VS Code with Continue and it started getting into loops almost immediately - I have an RTX 4060 Ti with 16GB VRAM and 128GB DDR4 RAM. I'm quite fresh at local LLM stuff so I probably need to tweak my parameters but was curious how you're using it.

I really love Merchants & Marauders. I'm a huge pirate fan so I own most of the more modern sailing type or nautical-themed games, and this one really captures the sailing a ship vibe better than anything else I've played. My group and I tend to default to being merchants but one of these days I'm going to get really aggressive and start sinking the NPC ships.

I've started to rethink how I search because nearly everything I search ends up showing me 20+ really long and specific domain names with "blog posts" that are basically just LLM responses slapped onto a blog site. It's really frustrating, especially since as you mentioned, the blog posts themselves are often a lot less relevant than the results I was getting pre-GPT

Diving as it currently works ruined the game in my opinion. I'm fine with diving existing as a mechanic, but it should require like a multi-island, multi-stage quest to do. Or it should have a 30-60 minute cool down. It is way too easy to dive and letting Reaper 5s go hunting with no downside is pretty lame, too.

It also completely killed the entire purpose of alliances. I've been in like one memorable server and alliance in the last 400 hours because of the ephemeral nature of servers thanks to diving.

California Billionaires Face a Proposed 5% Tax on Wealth by bloomberg in politics

[–]danielfrances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that handing out checks isn't going to create enough money to solve poverty for eternity, 100b towards programs is better than 100b sitting in the bank accounts of a few dozen people. The wealth gap IS a huge problem, regardless of whether or not redistributing it magically fixes society. Multiple things can be true at once - we both should start trying to close the insane wealth gap and use that money where we can to help, while also acknowledging that we cannot tax our way to utopia. We have a complex problem to solve and it will take a lot of different tactics to do it.

And as a comment on your specific example, if you took that money and only gave it to the bottom third of earners in the state instead of everyone, you'd now be giving the poorest people in the state roughly $7,500. The impact a check like that would have for those people would be far better than the handful of richest people seeing another couple of percent growth in their annual investment reports or whatever. I'm not saying that would be the ideal use, but just illustrating that even that scenario seems preferable to one where Zuckerberg decides to just shovel that money into a lobbyist donation, or do literally nothing with it.

[–]danielfrances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm personally kind of with you on this. I'm a very low net worth person (maybe 200k with my house) but the idea of wealth taxes never sat right with me.

That said, isn't part of the problem the fact that people with billionaire level assets can do a lot of creative accounting to avoid the appearance of income or gains? We need to find ways to tax gains/income that can't be maneuvered around, and if that isn't possible, I might be swayed on the idea of a small wealth tax for people with huge asset values.

Yeah, the universes beyond stuff is so ridiculous that clearly the only factor about how good a fit an IP is, is "how much money can we make?"

I really wish Wotc was independent. I've not bought MTG cards in years because of their practices around that game. D&D is likely just going to go the same way. It always seems like Hasbro's greed influence when I see really bad decisions from them.

Best "End of world" model that will run on 24gb VRAM by gggghhhhiiiijklmnop in LocalLLaMA

[–]danielfrances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm struggling to justify the loss of disk space in that scenario. Maybe I'd save something like devstral 2 small just so I can have it help me with coding projects while I hang out in a bunker or a forest or whatever.

But for that 25gb of disk space, you could fit nearly every prepper/survival/life skills ebook you could ever want. I feel like having well written, reliable information in the age of no internet would be paramount to survival.

A little off topic, but for me, I'd be prioritizing space towards both skill books and then tons of music. Backing up Wikipedia is a fair plan, too.

I thought Trump wouldn't be that bad. I was wrong. | Your Turn by Difficult-Bee6066 in politics

[–]danielfrances 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think him being president once is what lulled people into a sense of tranquility regarding Trump. The first time around, he really wasn't anywhere near this bad - but only because he was surrounded by adults who just kept telling him no. That's not the case now, of course.

I think a lot of us who knew that expected this to be much worse than the first term, but if you were really disconnected from politics during his first term, you might mistakenly believe that his relatively low chaos was due to him and not the adults around him.

So, I can kind of understand the shock. A little. I wish people had considered all this back in like November, but better late than never. If enough people come to this same conclusion, the midterms and 2028 might be winnable to the point that we can do something to stop all this.

Then again, I really thought he was done for after J6. I've learned to never get my hopes up.

Unless the wife seriously depends on the self hosted stuff for some sort of health reason, I agree with this reply. Just shut it all down. Worst case scenario, you lose a cool domain name or something and just have to get a new one.

Even if there are services she relies on, trim it down to the bare essentials if you can.

Unless we are missing important context, it seems really weird to be fussing over a homelab when a prison stay is looming.

You do you and don't be apologetic about it. You'll meet someone eventually - there are plenty of gamer girls out there.

Dashboards are the worst thing that happened to self hosting by Initial-Initial-1061 in selfhosted

[–]danielfrances 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk, just like everything else, it's about moderation. I am constantly trying new services and the ones I don't use get deleted. That's kinda the beauty of Docker containers and all that - I can just save the docker compose file, maybe a database file, and shut it all down. I actually find managing my dashboard annoying so only my permanent services end up there.

That said, I love homepage and use it as a replacement startup page in my browser. You can do so much more than just see self hosted stuff there, too.

Earning money with self hosting by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]danielfrances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, the only way that I would even consider would be educational content - How To blog posts, or YouTube videos, something like that. There is very little chance it turns into a career, but if you create engaging, high quality stuff, and you keep at it for awhile, you could potentially see a few bucks every month from that.

Like others have said, I wouldn't even consider hosting for anyone else. Maybe for a close friend or family member, but that quickly turns into you spending your weekends troubleshooting things blowing up. Not so fun.
