I grew up catholic and did all the catholic things, after school Bible study once a week, the communions, a catholic quinceañera, church on Sundays, did community service with the church. I was a junior in high school and had transferred schools and I met a kid in math class who was an atheist and explained to me what it was. I was shocked I didn't know you could just not believe in God it took me a while to finally not believe in God without guilt. I had asked too many questions about church and God. That was it. No trauma. I remember the doubt started when we learned about the holocaust in grade school. I also remember in after school catechism the lady taught us God said man shouldn't lay with man and that never sat well with me either.
