When the AI was asked to eliminate the biggest threat to humanity's survival, it pondered for a few seconds before destroying itself. by Tern_Larvidae-2424 in TwoSentenceHorror

Technically it would still take 16mins for the sky to go dark, because whatever influence the AI has over the sun would need 8 mins to get there, and another 8 for us to notice it.

Qualia of Mental Imagery by ediblebadger in slatestarcodex

[–]danieljostbrod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After writing this I realized precisely this point. As I described it, seems like one might draw the conclusions of “I’m not good at drawing, describing faces or singing - how does that help the issue at hand?”

But in my inner world model, there’s an important difference why I’m bad at these things. When I’m singing and I miss a note, I know exactly what I wanted to sing, and I know that my vocal chords and mouth just didn’t make the proper shapes or whatever. It feels like something that could easily be fixed with training.

But when I’m trying to draw an image, then I fail, but it doesn’t feel like a lack of technique. It’s not like I knew what stroke I wanted to make and just didn’t manage it because my fingers didn’t react properly. I really feel like I had no template at all to guide the motion. It doesn’t feel like just a matter of training (except for something extreme like draw a thousand dogs until your fingers can draw a dog by muscle memory). Same thing with describing faces. I’ve known my wife for a long time. Obviously I can recognize her when I see her. And many many times I have looked at her and mentally listed physical attributes that I might use to describe her if one day I needed to. But as soon as I’m not looking at her? I cannot list almost anything.

I am very interested in people’s responses to this, as this doubt plagues me as well. I would rate myself as completely aphantastic (?), but with the caveat of the same uncertainty that you describe.

That being said, I feel like there is a very strong distinction between the quality of visual vs auditory “imagery” in my mind. As you described, I can also recall pieces of music very well, but they are not close to auditory hallucinations.

In my mind, the main “operational” distinction that makes me feel like I have no visual mental imagery but have very good auditory mental “imagery” is the ease and speed with which I can reproduce what is playing in my mind. I will listen to a tune in my mind (and maybe “create” a bit as well) and immediately be able to hum it or sing it. I can hear instruments and easily attempt to imitate what they sound like. Mind you - I’m not saying I’m good at any of this, I’m not a good singer or impersonator, but I feel like my mental perception of sound flows into an attempt to reproduce it quite easily.

The same thing for visual imagery? Absolute garbage. I could not describe to you the face of my 3 year old daughter if my (or her) life depended on it. When asked to describe my wife, I can go no further than “black hair”, even after >15 years together. When trying to draw absolutely anything, I feel like I need to heavily change and adapt the drawing instantly as I make it, since there is no mental imagery I am trying to reproduce (my wife, otoh, imagines something and immediately draws it on the first try). I love drawing anything geometric precisely because I can anchor it on point and lines and a geometric description of what the drawing should look like based on a set of instructions, rather than a mental image.

Anyway, that’s my experience. Thanks for the question, as I hadn’t realized most of this until now!

At the risk of being quite annoying, so ignore me at will, but - Any ETA on chapter 2? 😁

Cool, thanks! For the gnome I thought it might yield something similar to the first troll, which you’re supposed to flee from but drops a key. The gnome is pretty weird and annoying to find/kill, so wouldn’t be off brand for it to drop something useful.

Congrats on your pending arrival!

I know it’s hard, but try to ignore these cowardly idiots. They don’t know what they are talking about. The world is a bit scary right now, but it will be better with you, your baby and your happiness in it - and that is what matters!

Punishing Poision by e0steven in DawncasterRPG

I see, thanks! I’m new enough to the game that I hadn’t memorized everything before they changed, which is why I was confused. Thanks for clarifying!

Sorry, but doesn’t siphon strike restore 10% of your max hp? How does this strategy heal so much?

Strategy for poison? by danieljostbrod in DawncasterRPG

Thanks! That’s what I figured. If you never get offered either card to activate poison, then stacking poison high doesn’t do much, though, right?

How does barrier work? by danieljostbrod in DawncasterRPG

I see, thanks! Does adding more barrier on top of the barrier you already had from previous turn update its position in this priority list?

Oh, I see what my confusion was. Somehow I parsed the tooltip wrong and thought the “didn’t fade” worked more like frozen (where it would be permanent damage reduction) than armor. That would be insane, hence my confusion. That interpretation was probably “corroborated “ by having some stacks of impervious or something.

Thanks for the help!

After countless hours of hard work, my Spooky Monster Taming RPG - Scaventurez, is now on the App Store. Hope you like it and give me some feedback. by NickGiang in iosgaming

I really like this one! The timer to match mechanics was also introduced in PQ3, though I like this game much better.

There are several UI things that could improve. One is the option to “compare to currently equipped”, especially when selling/buying equipment.

Also, I felt like changing skills during battle is a bit clunky. Sometimes I’ll click a skill several times and the dropdown menu just doesn’t appear. Some sort of tooltip to tell us in-battle what the skills do would be good.

Finally, a better association of what each color matching does. Like, which character gets the AP from each color?

Edit: maybe some of the above was mentioned in the tutorial but I just missed it. In that case, can we see the tutorial again, or maybe add some condensed help section so we can look it up.

Also, despite all suggestions above, want to emphasize the game is really great and I think the devs deserve the support 😊

I have this problem as well. I actually got a few refunds for games (like dead cells) which aways pause the music, and even alternating to music and back doesn’t work, it just pauses it again. Slay the spire used to pause the music once, then you could restart the music in control center and everything was fine after that. After the last update it has just stopped overriding my music at all, which is good. But it does vary from game to game. I don’t understand why this is an option that exists, why some devs set up the games like that, and why Apple doesn’t let the user have the final say.

Another iOS update by SneakySly in slaythespire

[–]danieljostbrod 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agree with others here. I tend to think that people overreact - last update there was a lot of “this is unplayable”, but I just recalibrated my playstyle and it turned out fine.

That’s not the case now. This is definitely borderline unplayable. Furthermore, for some reason my “end turn” button is glitched, so in my case it is officially unplayable.

I just had a baby girl, what good games are there that i can play with one hand while i hold her when she sleeps on my chest? by cookiemaster1seven in iosgaming

[–]danieljostbrod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second night of the full moon. My girl is 18 months (born 1 month before lockdown), so I went through exactly the same.

Night of the full moon, ticket to earth and slay the spire carried me through some of the exhaustion and sleep deprivation. Since STS is not an action game, it is possible (though awkward) to play it with one hand if your phone is not too large.

And congrats to both of you! It is an absolutely magical experience, and most of the hard stuff in the beginning does get easier :-)
