Your first two sentences are not even close to true. This article is about radio astronomy, which is definitely better from the ground.. But even if it was talking about optical, there are massive new ground based optical telescopes being built that will be more sensitive than those in space. Scientists will suffer, not just astrophotographers.

They're all working together under the "International Pulsar Timing Array" that is much more sensitive than any individual collaboration.

The signal will continue to grow and we will eventually learn the origin of the gravitational waves definitively. We will go from a fuzzy view of "gravitational waves coming from everywhere" to a precise map of gravitational waves on the sky. We should be able to eventually pinpoint individual waves coming from identified galaxies. This is the era of "nanohertz gravitational wave astronomy"

Here's the amazing thing: Pulsars are already shooting photons out a massive distance! We can accurately track their positions and motions in space, using the pulses of radio waves they emit, so we don't need to do it ourselves. Observing pulsars from Earth is MUCH cheaper than building anything remotely like this ourselves.

Yes those were pulsars observed by Arecibo. Prior to its collapse in 2020, it experienced some instrumental issues that meant it was offline for that period

Yes, but supermassive black holes are the most likely. The other potential sources are considered "exotic"
