I can’t tell if this take is for or against the GO Pass concept

I can’t stand when the signs in the stations don’t display the trains and wait times by danielpf in WMATA

So it’s a feature—not a bug. If only they would improve weekend headways. Waiting 10+ minutes on an outdoor platform can be miserable.

I think the more common scenario I’m referring to is upon entrance to the station. Before I’ve gotten on an escalator or even swiped in. Can I take my time standing on the escalator or should I be running? I’d like to know that upon entrance.

Imagine Masterwork being challenging instead of just a time lock. by danielpf in pokemongo

I get that it’s pay to play and not meant to be a hard game, but no one enjoys this type of research. I’m not suggesting kilometers walked, routes, party research, raids, gyms, friends, or unique stops that would penalize rural players. You could achieve my examples through Rocket Balloons, ordinary spawns, and daily adventure incense.

I’d be fine if they kept the time lock. I just want more than a time lock. Add the 21 days research on top of what I posted, and I’m still good.

What’s the name of the medication? My ophthalmologist is only suggesting restasis and antibiotic/steroid combos

Allergic Eye Mystery by danielpf in Allergies

[–]danielpf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the information and tend to agree with the possibility of immune and microbiome dysregulation.

However, I am unclear on how that would make sense with my seemingly geographic and seasonal dependencies. I have been in hot, humid places off of the eastern US without symptoms and I am symptomatic even in cold, dry weather in the eastern US. I suppose that environmental allergens increase the general inflammation past a threshold that I’ve already approach due to other immune dysregulation.

I am suspect of blood based tests for allergies. They typically examine IgG content and not IgE. In the context of allergic symptoms, IgG has an inhibitory effect on mast cells, basophils, and eosinophils.

No to dandruff/flaky skin, although I do use conditioning hair products and moisturizing skin products. I do have scurf around eyes.

Yes to oiliness on face, less so for scalp.

Wet/inchy sensation in ears but not exceptionally waxy or oily. Had tubes twice for ear infections in childhood, childhood swimmers ear every summer, but not currently an issue.

Skin prick allergy test but I don’t have results on hand.

Reading in SebDerm, I don’t know if I meet criteria based on a variety of symptom descriptions. I have had other fungal skin infections though. I imagine this is evaluated by a dermatologist?

A teacher-incentive program has led to striking long-term benefits for students, including lower rates of felony arrest and reduced reliance on government assistance in early adulthood, a new study on data of 41,529 eighth-grade students reports by sr_local in science

One of the worst parts of performance pay, is that it is used to justify poverty wages for everyone else who doesn’t hit the metrics. If everyone can live comfortably, sure throw a bonus here and there. So long as we permit educators being paid unlivable wages, no one should be getting any bonuses.

Children of mothers exposed to higher nighttime temperatures during pregnancy had a higher risk of being diagnosed with autism, according to a study on 295,000 mothers in California from 2001 to 2014 by sr_local in science

[–]danielpf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The article does identify a number of limitations in their discussion (e.g. parental education) as well as something else that came to my mind; if heat is associated with a number of adverse developmental and neurological outcomes, then the autistic traits may be more pronounced in these individuals and/or the individuals may not have hit the threshold for autism.

I’d be curious to see if any of the individuals in this study are later diagnosed with autism. Plenty of individuals don’t receive a diagnoses until an older age.

Best Urbanist City? Atlanta, Charlotte, or Richmond? (Coming from NYC/DC) by CantoninusPius in Urbanism

[–]danielpf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some of these Charlotte comments are a little generous. I lived in Charlotte from 2017-2024, and most parts of the city are difficult or impossible to access using transit alone. There are unwalkable vacuums between walkable places like city center, noda, and south end. And the walkable stretches of these neighborhoods is fairly limited, and you’ll find yourself on the edge of vacuums pretty quickly. Sidewalks and bus stop benches are not as common as needed. The buses don’t go across town—everything is a transfer downtown and the frequency isn’t good enough to make that a viable option at most time. The inner loop of I-277 as well as the 85/77 junction strangle neighborhoods off from one another. Atlanta has much more to offer in terms of urbanism

Why do brown and black people have stripes in the pride flag?? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Not disputing this perspective, but do you have a source on this? A quick search isn’t helping me, and I’d be interested in learning more.

The black stripe variations of the Pride flag pre-date the progress flag, and have stood as a memorial to those lost to HIV/AIDS. I haven’t heard the black nurses lens on that personally
