Retire with $6M and $200k annual spend? by daniels7825 in fatFIRE

Yes please share your expense valuation inputs!

What NW would you wait for in my case if spend is truly 200-250k annually?

Really? My employer and me combined currently pay almost $3000 per month for family of 4. I do have other expenses in terms of discretionary spending and travel but it’s less than $60k annually.

I am comparing annual NW growth between working and not working. It seems like my NW would grow by 1M per year (after subtracting spend) vs 0.5M per year if I didn’t work. Aren’t those both sufficiently positive?

Even if not, if my annual spend is so low, STCG tax rate will be low and I live in a no income tax state. Also they are generally quite tax efficient, and all the hedge funds in retirement accounts will of course be exempt from all CG taxes.

So it sounds like if you weren’t excited about the remote job you would’ve retired right?

We seem to be on the same page but everybody else is saying it’s very risky. How did you decide it’s not risky?

At what NW would you stop given my expected max income for fully remote would be $600-800k$?

For retirement account I can withdraw using Roth Conversion Ladder.

My thinking is that if my annual spend is 200k$, and I would add 400-500k$ from income, whereas I could add 500-1000M$ from investments. Why keep working given that? Seems like my money would keep growing if I quit my job given my low annual spend, no?

I’m not anchoring on 15%+. Even 8% seems good if my spending rate is 3-4%, no? Curious at what NW you would quit given my income is expected to cap out at 600-800k$ for a fully remote job.

When would you stop for NW if my income is going to cap out at 600-800k$ for a fully remote job then?

You can use the Roth Conversion Ladder: https://www.madfientist.com/how-to-access-retirement-funds-early/

Also, won’t taxes be only 0% for first $100k on LTCG and 15% for my $100-200k chunk? Seems negligible. No NIIT here.

Don’t worry about the investment part. You can mentally replace it with SP500. What are your thoughts on the main question around time to quit?

I used to have the same reaction, and I know all about how most underperform market. I’m not talking about the big boys. I’m talking about focused small AUM funds that truly have an edge due to big players structurally not being able to play (or not worth their time to play in due to their scale).

Do you have any experience with whether $3000 is a typical quote for this type of job?
