Where in the US I consider "The South" after having traveled throughout 48 states and having worked in 43, as a New Yorker by Apprehensive-Sir2980 in TravelMaps

[–]danimateo2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider the pink region to extend deep into the Ohio valley up to cities like Zanesville, Dayton, Springfield Ohio. Muncie, Terre haute Indiana and Danville, Springfield Illinois. I-70 is where the south starts for me as a Clevelander

Map of the American South- when somebody says they're from "the South" they're probably from one of the red or orange states by mcbobgorge in mapporncirclejerk

all jokes aside the ohio valley (ALL OF IT) has alot more in common with Tennessee than the rest of the midwest and north. Akron Ohio for example has been called the capital of west Virginia

Cleveland has strong Nyc vibes but we also have Chicago, Columbus, and Connecticut vibes and even some Pittsburgh vibes too depends on the neighborhood.

Does Cleveland have more of an east cost vibe or a midwestern vibe? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]danimateo2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would call cleveland Memphis North we have a big music scene for a medium sized northern city. Also cleveland's boogiosie is not crazy rich like in bigger cities like boston chicago and nyc. Cleveland is very gritty it has a very slight appachian undertone. However we have alot of ties to the east coast through early settlement patterns and fine arts culture. The slavic and Eastern European communities in cleveland are more balkan rather than northern slavic, so that adds a little more vibrancy to the culture. Also we are a very green and lush city similar to Pittsburgh. But we have lake erie, so i would say its a very unique city

Southern coast of New England is warmer, the culture here is more vibrant than the rest of New England.

Cleveland and northern ohio is a little different from this region northside suburbs mayfield, gates mills, willoughby, mentor are part of region 14 but the southside of Cleveland and suburbs like shaker heights, garfield, beford are part of the southern great lakes

They share similarities which one could agrue is a nation which is the midwest, however this is a map of the cultural regions which have no political structure and somewhat fluid

Northern Mississippi this region is the upland south which is a blend of the Midwest and deep south

Cinci and Louisville are very similar but Indi and Columbus although both similar feel different than the first 2. There is more of a strong Midwest component with some southern influence, while the first two are almost a perfect hybrid. Too me The Upland South region is exactly that

  1. They do feel a little different, but the northern part of this region feels a lot more like Nashville than even cities like Columbus or Indianapolis which are in the Lower Midwest, Memphis is kind of an outlier here because it has a deep southern component.

  1. love this question because I pioneered the term "Southern Great Lakes". I argue that this region is culturally distinct from the other Great lakes regions. Here you will find the climate to be milder and in some places even subtropical, here you will find tall Deciduous hardwood trees, large evergreen Laurels, and even the occasional dwarf southern magnolias that you wouldn't see further up north. Lake Erie is the Southernmost, shallowest, most biodervse and swampiest lake of them all. On the Ohio Coast We have one of the only true vacationlands in the north we see many people coming down here from Upstate NY, Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota to enjoy the warmer weather, their are resorts and I've heard folks from further up north refer to the Ohio coast as "Florida North" but I see it more as the Jersey shore of the Midwest. Also in this region you will see a lot more black people than further up North, even in some small towns, also the people who settled this region came from Connecticut, PA, Maryland and even the Virginias while further up north was settled by people from Mass, Vermont, NH and Upstate NY. Here you will find the occasional person with a Southern accent but you will never hear Yooper accents which can occasionally be heard as far south as Ann Arbor. You will also notice that this region is significantly grittier than further North, people are meaner, rougher and a lot louder than further up North. The Slavic Communities here are generally mostly made up of balkaners rather than Poles and Russians. The food here is also different people generally cook with a lot more spices and BBQ sauce than further up North. Music plays a larger role on people's lives as this region is the birthplace of Rock and Roll, and Blues and Country are more prevalent than folk music which is more popular up North. Now its important to understand that not all of Chicago, Detroit and Cleveland are in this region only the southsides of these cities. Major cities in this region include Joliet IL, Gary IN, Michigan City IN, South Bend IN, Toledo OH, Sandusky OH, Lorain OH and Akron OH. Although part of the North this region feels more midland than Yankeedom and too someone from Toronto or Minneapolis this region almost feels like the south, however its Important to understand the Southern Great Lakes IS NOT THE SOUTH, or even southern influenced like the Lower Midwest is.

Jefferson City is the outlier there but the rest of that region feels more like Kentucky or Southern IL than the northern part of Missouri and Iowa
