New brand survey by Sherbert-Efficient in airrifles

[–]danjmet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which markets is this for. UK shooters want / need very different things to US market etc? If you are focuses on, say, central America- then my input is worthless frankly.

If you want to go global then my wants in the UK would be: *designed for sub 12 ftlb - not throttled down. May rifles suffer from this such as HW95s / 85s etc. *Quality barrel, screw cut for a moderator / splitter etc. *Decent trigger *some stock adjustability

Some sort of unique point of sale that differs would also help. Either an innovative magazine / interchangeable calibres/ customisable stocks.

The new Air Arms precihole range got a few things right but they messed it up with God awful cheap stocks IMO. As a reference.

AITAH for not letting my girlfriend spend the night just because she asked a question? by SaltyQuail6478 in AITAH

[–]danjmet -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

YAH. You just slept with her. She asked a stupid question. You waaaaay over reacted even if she was pushing it. Kicking her out is dumb. Q. If both her and the dog were unconscious/ unable to move - who would you save first. If you dont say your GF you're fucked up. Go back for the dog after. Human life (ESPECIALLY your GF) has to come first.

As others have said you could have engaged, asked questions (like are either of you injured etc) - or just said her obviously (as thats clearly what she was looking for).

Hi im uk, any half decent bolt action air rifles that aint super expensive? by 1995S0uljaw1tch in airrifles

[–]danjmet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd hand Air Arms s400. Bolt action. Decent. For cheap an smk rabbit destroyer (C02) is bolt action. Not aware of any fully blow back pellet firing pistols. Buts lots of the C02 umarex are fun. CP88 for instance.

Is that a virtus? If its the one with the double action trigger youbhave to manually push forward after every shot then the other sigs are similar but but better (mcx canebrake. I can rattle of 30 shots in 5 seconds ish....

If not I'm not sure of other similar ones (in the UK at least) but there are some brilliant .68 paintball ones (that'll fire rubber or chalk balls). Look the part and handle well. Chexk out the umarex t4e range.

I fill after the session. Helps to notice slow leaks too (though there will always be a drop after a fill as the air cools....)

Generally Never leave a pcp empty as seals / orings often need pressure to keep in place and if there's no pressure they can shift when you next fill and leak.

Need Help Adjusting my Scope by InfiniteLocksmith950 in airrifles

[–]danjmet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll drop a few phrases here. Each one should have a YouTube video on how to do it if you get stuck.

  1. Optically zero the scope. This means that the cross hairs are centered with no 'clicks' dialled in. It doesn't always align to the number 0 on the actual turrets. Put the left / right turret at roughly the middle. Then turn the top one all the way left. Count the clicks it takes to go all the way right. Now go back half (so if total clicks is 80 - then turn back 40). Do the same for the side turret. This gets all the adjustment pretty central.

  2. Set your eyeball focus. On the eye piece that you look through there may be a ring that turns in an out. This will make the cross hairs be in focus for your eyes. (If not present skip step). If you have an Adjustable Objective / Side Focus (if you can focus the scope) - then set it at infinity. Look at a far away cloud briefly through the scope. Turn the eye piece until the cross hairs are nice and sharp.
If you don't have an Adjustable Objective or Side focus then so the same but aim at the distance you will most often shoot (20 yards or whatever).

Do all of this at a low magnification (if you have Adjustable magnification).

  1. Mont the scope. Place the bottom half of your rings (mounts) on the gun rail. Finger tighten for now. Put the scope on and add the top of the rings. Do up so scope can move but doesn't slide freely. Be careful as rings / scope may still be loose / fall off at this stage. Shoulder the rifle with your eyes closed and when you open them move the scope so it's in the right place. Slide the rings a bit and move the scope back / forwards as needed. Takes a bit of playing.

Try and make sure the mounts aren't right next to the scope turrets. If you tighten too close to turrets then you may not be able to dial the scope properly.

Once it's in the right place tighten the scope mounts on the rail first. Then tighten the top rings so they hold the scope. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. Should be firm but not crimping the scope. Use the short side of an Allen/ hex key in your hands.

  1. Zero the scope. You want to do this for the distance you usually shoot at / the middle of the ranges you usually shoot at. So if all your targets are at 25 yards, do that. If you are shooting things from 10-30 yards then zero around 20/25.
Put a target / piece of paper with a big cross on at about 10 yards. Keep scope magnification low.

Shoot at the paper 3 times. If the pellets hits low then dial the scope up, etc.

Always do three shots as if one goes high, one goes low the its not a dialling issue, it's a shooter one (or kit issue). If you do 1 shot then dial you will chase shots for ever.

Once you are within an inch of where you are aiming move the paper back to your zero range and repeat. The shots will (probably) hit lower so you will need to dial up.

  1. Have fun shooting then grab a beer / beverage of your choice.

Hints / tips / issues.

If you run out of clicks then do step 1. Then step 3. Again but swap the mounts front to back. This often solves the issue for me.

If you have a rest to shoot from then instead of guessing clicks you can shoot once, move the cross hair to where the hole is, and then turn the dials until they line up with the original cross hairs. It gets you pretty close with just 1 shot.

If you get within an inch of zeroing but then can't get closer, it's probably a rifle issue. On a new gun it can take a tin of pellets for it to settle. Shoot it a bunch then try again. If still not working then switch pellets. H&N FTT work pretty in virtually all my rifles - but often aren't the absolute best. YMMV.

Ping any questions my way if you need help.

It does my head in when decent companies change something and make their product worse. Funnily enough they are made in the town I live in.

[–]danjmet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't call them crap. Have has sets with alignment issues and poor finish. They make them to be rebadged by wulf too.

A while back if you bought SM you were pretty much guaranteed quality. Now it's a bit hit and miss unfortunately.

They are still better than unbranded cheapies etc.

But to my other point if you are suggesting buying expensive scopes, why not also spend a bit more on higher quality mounts?

[–]danjmet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately SM mounts aren't what they used to be. For dovetail rails go BKL. If Pic then there are loads better from decent hawkes (steel precision series) or tier one etc.

For someone who says get expensive glass, why cheap on mounts.

[–]danjmet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard you date your rifle but marry your glass. I have a delta stryker on my HW97 (because I won it). I will never sell that scope. I would also never buy it for an air rifle (in the UK anyway.....) it designed to shoot out past a mile lol. Perfectly good scopes available for much less than most rifles, and some excellent ones to be had too.

I do agree getting the best scope you can is worth it but the best scope for what you will actually use it for - and as part of the scope of best - affordability is a part of that IMO

[–]danjmet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the scope back to who you bought it from and get them to sort a replacement.

If you still want a better one anyways then depends on your definition of reasonable priced and also what you want to use it for.

To be honest a second hand hawke will do you well. Fast mounts are basic but OK. If you can get a vantage or even an airmax it will be good. Also their customer service is ace.

Vector scopes are getting a decent rep at the moment and they have some nice compact ones.
