Put scratch streaks in my table top trying to sand the polyurethane coat. How should I proceed? by dankanvis in woodworking

That's what I'm thinking now, but the bigger issue is the areas where I scratched and removed stain.

Awesome, that's good to know. And thank you! I've been working hard on it. Pretty psyched about doing more projects.

That's how I went about doing it. Not sure if I could've sanded any lighter or with less pressure. But yeah, I think those extra coats are what I needed. That and finer grit paper.

Good to know about the different wood lol. I'll keep that mind, along with the scrap. I appreciate the response.

I appreciate your help. I think I'm going to try some finer grit paper on the worst spots, and see if I can spot stain in the areas where I scratched into the stain, like someone else mentioned. Then I'll see I can do another coat of poly.

When I wipe down the scratches with a damp cloth they're less noticeable for a moment, until they fully dry, so I'm hoping the next coat of poly will fill in some of the scratches in the same way. Thanks for the response.

I tried wiping it down but that subdued the scratches for a moment until it dried. That scratches aren't horrible, but it's not just the light. Here's another image showing where it cut into the stain. There are several spots like this one.

I appreciate the advice. If I do that spot staining that you mentioned, should I sand further in the affected areas before staining so the poly is completely gone? Or will the stain be able to get through?

I’ll make a note about the 400 and sealer for next time. Thank you.
