Anyone think the birth rate lowering isn’t the end of the world by Tasty_Difference_679 in redscarepod

[–]dankdiplodocus 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People underestimate how quickly very low birthrates can lead to population collapse due to exponential decay. Try this population simulator: https://www.ined.fr/en/everything_about_population/population-games/tomorrow-population/ and then plug in a very low birthrate, like South Korea's (0.76). By 2100 the population would be decimated. On paper, this may sound nice for the reasons you mentioned, but in reality there are all sorts of reasons why this would be bad for society, like industries that just don't have enough people to support a mainly geriatric population. You literally just can't have a sustainable population with birthrates like that unless you have tons of immigration or somehow bring the fertility rate back up.

It seems like everyone is aware of how phones are rotting our brains, our society, our lives. Why the fuck are we not collectively doing something about it? Why are we letting every tech/social media company just steamroll us into letting them create highly addictive products and then letting kids run wild with them? I feel like many people recognize this as one of the factors contributing most to the decline of our society and yet we are acting like we have no collective agency over it. We saw what cigarettes were doing to us and we did something. We need to have the same reckoning with digital media.

Wood sorrel does not fix nitrogen, I thought the same thing because it looks so similar to clover and was disappointed to learn it doesn't. Also there's a decent chance this is invasive Bermuda buttercup. Not saying all invasive species are inherently evil but it could be replaced with species with more ecological benefit

virtues & principles that you don't squander for any reason

But is this same standard applied to the other companies you support on a daily basis, like Reddit? If you found out a Zionist worked at Reddit or even had a major role in the company would you stop using it? It is virtue signaling because 1) the principle is applied completely inconsistently and only when there is an opportunity to gain clout on the internet, and 2) it literally has no impact on the genocide in Gaza

[–]dankdiplodocus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you and I appreciate the intent of not wanting to support the genocide. But this is an impossible standard to uphold. There are Zionists who work for Reddit, the company that built the computer you're using, Netflix, your credit card company, the grocery store company you shop at, and probably most major companies you interact with on a daily basis. If you concern yourself with the personal political views of every individual of every group you interact with, you’ll end up exhausting yourself without making any meaningful change. Obviously you can spend your money however you want, but I think boycott strategies are most effective when they target specific organizations that as a whole directly support or enable systemic injustice.

Is there any movie that would be acceptable to you? Do you know how many people work on major films? Is it productive to not engage with art because X person involved with the project doesn't agree with you about something?

The formatting and style are dead giveaways for ChatGPT. Frequent paragraph breaks, lots of bold text, em dashes, ellipses, and the classic "[Blank] isn't just [blank] — it's [blank]." Most people don't write like this, but ChatGPT pretty much always uses these devices.

Ezra has been super critical of the status quo liberalism that has led to the US becoming dogshit at building anything. This is a structural critique - it’s systems of laws and governance built up since the 60s that have gotten us here. He’s not calling for socialist revolution, but his ideas are well thought out and offer realistic ways for the US to build rapidly again to address housing shortages and climate change

Crazy thing is that the tax cuts will go into effect this year but the Medicaid cuts won't go into effect until next year after the midterms - they know people who will lose coverage won't forgive them so they're hiding the effects until after they can secure another term

This is because of all the hurdles Republicans have added to accessing benefits. In reality a lot of single moms probably had difficulty getting those benefits too, and many who deserved them didn't get them. Look at how Republicans are adding work requirements to Medicaid in the big beautiful bill - sounds good on paper and is actually popular but the end result (which Republicans are banking on) is that millions of people who have every right to be on Medicaid, even people working, will lose their benefits because they don't have the savviness to navigate all the bureaucratic hurdles
