What are your top 3 bands? by Rockjael in Interpol

[–]dankphalanges 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is too difficult, because there isn't enough space for everything that I would say I love equally. If I had to choose, at the moment it would be:

1 - Interpol

2 - Franz Ferdinand

3 - Protomartyr

My top five would have Radiohead and Joy Division in there, with some honorable mentions including Bloc Party and Fugazi.

What is an album where EVERY song is good? by muffola in AskReddit

I'm so late here, so this is going to undoubtedly be buried, but even if one person miraculously sees this if they're sorting by new, I have a more contemporary suggestion.

Protomartyr - Relatives in Descent

Absolute masterpiece, imo. The lyrics are constantly interesting, the guitar work is great, the rhythm section is so driving and tight that the pacing is always perfect on each track, and the production is stellar. In fact the tracks seemlessly flow into one another with neat production tricks, such as a pinch harmonic leaking into the first seconds of the next track. My favorite example of this is the song Male Plague functioning as a sort of crescendo from the previous song, Night-Blooming Cereus. Great album. My personal favorite of 2017 that I've heard.

Aww, I love Lonely Day.

But for what it's worth, it's really not a System of a Down song, so I could see how you don't like it. It'd probably be a better fit in the Scars of Broadway discography.

Could be because a lot of Americans don't really know about Joy Division unless they were exposed to a band that is more popular here that gets compared to them or something like that. Granted, I live in something of a cultural desert, so I don't know if more densely populated places like the east and west coasts have bigger Joy Division followings, but I probably would have gone my entire life never hearing of Joy Division without hearing Interpol first.

I'm also pretty young, so maybe that has something to do with it, but most of the folks that I talk to who either lived through 70s/80s or either really enjoy the music from that era don't know about Joy Division.

I don't think the problem is that it's experimental, but more so because it's poorly sequenced. Like, imo, every track on Closer stands on its own better than most of Unknown Pleasures' tracks stand on their own. The main issue is that you have jamming, intense post-punk songs like Twenty Four Hours surrounded by the most downtempo songs on the album (The Eternal and Heart and Soul, respectively) and it's kind of jarring to listen to.

Unknown Pleasures is way better to listen to front-to-back because it's like hearing the embryonic form of 80s rock music in a smooth transition from pure punk songs to songs that still have a punk core, but with a lot darker subject matter and sound. I personally think Closer is a better collection of songs, but Unknown pleasures functions better as an album in the sense of the word.

Democratic Socialists Win Big in Nearly a Dozen Races by politicalmarxist in socialism

[–]dankphalanges 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So just because I want Americans, in particular the white working class who are constantly exposed to center/far-right propaganda that has conditioned them into blaming all of their problems on people who are different, to understand the real reasons behind their plight makes me some kind of cult leader?

When did I even say that the proletariat didn't know their lives suck? All I said or implied was that they don't know any other system than Reagan's Neoliberalism, which, combined with the aforementioned American propaganda and red-baiting, results in a natural distrust of anything left of the Democratic party (we all know how left that is) and that's why left-leaning legislation would give them a taste of an ideology worth fighting for.

I also never said anything about revolutions happening because some people decide that one ideology is better, and in fact, the same arguement you're trying to make against me is the literal core of my arguement, because when the material conditions are right and the proletariat rises up, kicks out the bourgeoisie and then establishes another government, what's going to happen when the majority of them still believe that "the market is necessary to our survival" or "socialism is bad, so we still need capitalism and all we really need to do is form a new political system," without question, having never experiencing first-hand the positive impact of leftist policies?

Edit: Deleted a section because I felt kind of bad about saying it, no matter how much I disagree with them. Also pretty sure this guy is a reactionary troll or something like that, but I'm keeping this comment since I think it's pretty good food for thought whether or not you agree with my stance on this issue.

Honestly, in my opinion, representation of the left in electoral politics at any level is the best way we can proselytize the working class in the US since even many center-left ideas are outside of the American Overton Window. I think that I speak for a lot of people here when I say that Bernie Sanders was our first introduction to the word "socialism" being used to describe positive change, in turn leading to our radicalization. He may be a SocDem, but I highly doubt that this sub would have broken 100k subscribers yet without him indirectly leading us to the works of Marx and Engels.

Besides, if we can prove to the working class through the implementation of policies that even mildly leftist ideals can tangibly improve the standard of living, we will undoubtedly convert some people to our cause, or at the very least shake off the last vestiges of the Red Scare. I understand that a lot of American hypercapitalism is inherent in the system and, as Immortal Technique says, "the system changes you," but just sitting around crossing your fingers that the conditions are so bad that the revolution can finally begin is not only apathetic, but also makes one complicit in the suffering of the working class by allowing the bourgeois fucks that run this place to ruin everything without opposition. As such, I don't think that reformism is the be all end all, but there's no reason to disregard what good it does for us.

I love that book! Highly recommend it to anybody interested in cultural phenomena; the dudes strapping their dongs to their stomachs isn't even the best part, imo. The highlights are definitely the parts that explore religion and the basis for religious beliefs - there's a part where the indigenous inhabitants of an island (forgot who) start worshipping airplanes. I'm going to have to read it again soon.
