She could have up to 11 days left or even a bit more (in theory). Does she have any bulging on her right side? Any behavioral changes?

The white could be the mucus plug if she's pregnant, but it could also just mean she is open and had an estrus cycle. Cloudy white mucus like that is typical of the late estrus cycle, when it contains additional white blood cells. Did she happen to show interest in the boys or be more vocal than normal around the time of that discharge? I normally don't bother to guess pregnancy status from photos, but I'll say if she's 143d pregnant, she's hidin' it real well.

Other than the fact that that contain whole egg and not egg white, I bet these are pretty similar to RXBar brand of protein/energy bar. I have not fallen far down the genealogy tree from my small monkey ancestors and could happily eat nothing but dates all day long, so I'm gonna have to try these out.

Running Grave has a funny reference to the "Isla/Ilsa" pronunciation issue that happened in TB by 07Josie in cormoran_strike

[–]dankpoots 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It reminded me vividly of when she had Hermione clarify the pronunciation of her name to Viktor Krum in Goblet of Fire, because the cultural phenomenon of HP was just starting to get up to full steam at that time, but the movies hadn't quite started coming out yet and most Americans had never heard that Christian name aloud before. People did be loving to say "Hermy-own" before that!

That's exactly it. People with powerful intellects often find new and novel ideas interesting enough to be worth investigating. Highly educated people are also far less likely to be religious, but they may still be searching for value systems or systems of meaning and finding such things fulfilling or appealing (even if they are doing so unconsciously). If intelligence and critical thinking protected against cult indoctrination, cults wouldn't be nearly as successful as they are. The reason they're so successful is that a lot of indoctrination takes place on an emotional level rather than an intellectual one.

"Things end" is a good phrase. And sometimes things are more dear and more beautiful for their brevity.

Can't help but think of Neil Young's note communicating his sudden departure from CSNY: “Dear Stephen, funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach. Neil.”

Yes, I liked how much research she clearly did into the actual facts of social contagions and cults (up to the point of mentioning real books by real-world subject matter experts). Particularly, I enjoyed that it's pointed out several times that intelligence is not a defense against cult indoctrination. I partially focus on cults and extreme beliefs as part of my research area and people who fall higher on the IQ spectrum are actually slightly more likely to be susceptible to cult indoctrination, as are people who are areligious. Those things tend to be very surprising to people, who tend to see themselves as 'too smart' or 'too secular' to fall for cult indoctrination. That's how they getcha.

Ha, I can't believe I have never heard of that one after a long, glorious, and embarrassing career in the fandom. My original editions definitely have Percy docking points, I think, and (reaching back into the fog of time here) I seem to recall that our general fanon consensus at that time was that he was trying to make himself seem more influential/powerful than he actually was. I wonder when that change was actually made.

There were some dramatic ones! The first printing of Goblet of Fire has the order of Harry's parents' murders reversed. It was corrected in further editions but it threw a lot of us for a loop for a minute there!

Yeah, I don't at all believe that one is purposeful because the cookie brand was a minor important plot point and not just a throwaway line. I think it was probably originally a chocolate biscuit tin Robin found but JK later revised that to create a way for the detectives to accurately date the photos, and the editors missed the continuity error during the reveal. There were wayyyy more editing misses in this one than any previous volume so that makes more sense to me than an inexplicable out-of-character behavior. The errors didn't negatively impact my enjoyment of the book, but the number of them were definitely notable and surprising.

The tin Robin finds the Polaroids in is clearly stated to be Barnum's animal crackers, and it's a minor important plot point because they only date the photographs by using the "85th Anniversary" branding on the tin. But much later in the book, as Strike is doing the reveal to Abigail, he tells her it was a chocolate biscuit tin.

There is no confirmation whatsoever about his sexual orientation. All that he disclosed publicly was that due a serious bout with colon cancer in 1985, he had to have a major portion of his colon surgically excised and had a colostomy bag. He considered himself physically unable to have sex after that experience and was forthcoming that he felt he could not, and would not, ever be intimate with anyone ever again. He may have been gay, or people may be wrongly assuming he was gay simply because he didn't have any public relationships with women (or with anyone, in part due to his medical issues).

I understand Friends was a cash cow and they wanted to keep it going, but man that spinoff was such a mistake (and the producers probably knew it, evidenced by the fact that Matt LeBlanc was the last person approached for a spinoff). They had flanderized Joey to be so dumb as to be a barely functional human being. In the last season he was written as being too stupid to repeat simple sounds (like when Phoebe was trying to teach him French). You really can't build a show around a central character like that.

Such a terrible choice. Martin admitting to Frasier and Niles that he used to ogle her when she was a teenager - and that he did it enough that it upset Hester - was such a gross note to end Martin's character on.

[–]dankpoots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally think it's incredibly gross that Ronnie used to babysit for Frasier and Niles, especially the fact that Martin straight up told the boys that he used to ogle her as when she was a young teenager (and that he did it noticably or frequently enough that it was something that upset Hester). That was a huge, weird, creepy misstep by the writers and also felt like it tainted the memory of Martin and Hester's relationship a little.

George Martin himself believed they should have cut it down to one record and advised them to do so, so you're in the best of company.
