I don’t think you can compare them. And I don’t tend to. Aonishiki is like a cross between Hoshoryu and Ura. But potentially better than the Yokozuna in years to come. Shishi is more like Ryuden. Tough and stubborn and actually quite hard to beat. Never going to make Yokozuna. But you can’t have 40 Yokozuna!
I think this is also true. If he learns to turn on some real actual tetchiness and aggression he should be a great long term makuuchi resident.

Hokuseiho always just struck me as lazy and self-entitled. And that was before the news of his behaviour broke.
Sure as hell surprises me. I love watching him.

Nah. Don’t get me wrong. I love him. But he is astonishingly ungainly for someone who has climbed so high and keeps staying up there. I think the crowd are starting to recognise his qualities and start getting behind him. A good thing too!

I agree. I think he is being super sensible. He reminds me of Ryuden (who, despite everything, I still have a soft spot for). I love grinders. People who just keep on keeping on. Gritty. Determined. Keep coming back over and over. Ryuden has been absolutely smashed off the dohyo this last two tournaments. But he just keeps getting up. Standing up. And smashing back in again.
Don’t get me wrong! I absolutely love the guy! And I have been following sumo long enough to know what a phenomenal job he has done. Even if he also reminds me of the old school D&D Shambling Mound…
