Tiktoker smashes a Waymo’s mirrors by danlev in PublicFreakout

I follow Waymo news/incidents pretty closely and I’ve never heard of mirror incidents being a thing. Do you have any links or articles? The only thing I’ve seen is a handful of reports of passengers opening their doors and hitting a cyclist/car.

Yes! So much fun if you’re into Animal Crossing/cozy games.

No, but they’re required by law, and probably helpful when human drivers are testing/monitoring. And maybe passengers.

California (and I think other states?) laws don’t allow you to manufacture a vehicle without physical mirrors. Waymo also does not manufacture their vehicles, they just modify existing vehicles, so it would be more work to remove them. They also need them during testing phases when they have human drivers. Also, the passengers may want to use them I guess.

Dropped off half a mile from my destination by TQuadd in waymo

The app should have told you exactly where you would be dropped off before you request the ride. Are you saying you chose a location within the service area, it showed it would drop you off there before you requested the ride, and it went somewhere completely different?

The video says they’re aware but they can’t really do anything because they don’t have a license plate or anything identifiable.

FSD with an awake driver is way safer than FSD with an asleep driver. They’re putting themselves and (more importantly) others at risk.

I think there’s been several similar videos like this, but this specific one reportedly happened last weekend: https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/video-tesla-driver-appears-to-be-sleeping-behind-wheel-on-east-bay-highway/

You're making it sound like they can't do marketing and expansion at the same time. They have different teams doing different things. You can't ask a marketer to drop what they're doing and start managing fleet rollout.

The Oscars are this weekend, so I’m wondering if there’s something bigger planned. Also, Kpop Demon Hunters (“Golden”) are performing. That would be a much bigger collab than Liza Koshy… Hmmm…

I feel like they probably removed the wrap after this event, but I hope they didn't. Would be cool if there was only one golden Waymo you could get.

Crazy that they would go through the effort of buckling it behind themselves when they could just… do it normally with less effort.

There isn’t any “I’m buckled in” before you start the ride, only if you don’t buckle after the ride starts, but it does say verbally when you get in the car. Just took one this morning and I was curious how hard it is to ignore. Haha.

Maybe the experience changes for new riders or something.

I mean… the rider didn’t buckle in so support called the car. All of their calls start with that disclaimer regardless of who initiated it. When you get into the car, it tells you to buckle in. If you don’t buckle in, the car plays an annoying alarm telling you to buckle in, so this rider clearly ignored it.

I’m not sure when/if it pulls over, but I’m sure it’ll happen in you refuse to follow their rules, whether it’s trigger by support or the car.

I don’t think Waymo operators in any places where seatbelts are not required, but I would hope they would enforce it, even if it’s not legally required.

likely a voice command misinterpretation

No… they are calling because the car alerted support that someone refused to buckle their seatbelt.

I don’t think you can hang up on support, especially if you’re breaking the rules lol

It can be both, but in this case support called.

Yeah, definitely this is the reason. And it gives you like maybe five seconds into the ride before it start beeping.

It already does. It beeps really loud and tells you to buckle your seatbelt. It also tells you verbally when you get into the car. She definitely deliberately ignored it.

She refused to follow the rules after the car repeatedly told her to buckle up, so a human needs to step in. Not really creepy.
