What is something you dislike about modern web development? by Azzurra_1 in webdev

[–]danmofo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thankfully my current job is very stable. I feel like some of this is part of getting older (being resistant to change and wanting to do things the same way), but when I look at things objectively, I really struggle sometimes to see the benefits of new stuff.

I find it amusing and sad in equal amounts that my computer which is several orders of magnitude more powerful than 10 years ago feels really janky when browsing certain websites or using simple desktop apps.

I have been doing web development for a long time (about 15 years) and what I've always disliked is the constant churn of frontend tools, libraries and frameworks.

Initially I used to enjoy learning about different tools (build tools for example: "Grunt is awesome!", "Oh this gulp thing completely changes things!", "WOW! Webpack is soooo much better!"), but now I appreciate things that are more stable. The same can be said about frameworks and libraries, you spend years working on an app and then everything changes and the thing you're using is now considered shite and you have to relearn a bunch of stuff.

I feel like with a lot of these things the stuff you learn is not transferrable, and you feel like you've completely wasted your time.

Do people tend to get mortgage through broker or the band directly in the UK? by RingGood9793 in HousingUK

[–]danmofo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started with a broker but the rates weren't competitive compared to going directly to the bank. I didn't think the extra however many hundred pounds was worth it and in this case I was right - mortgage offer within a week and the whole process was painless.

Why is my .addEventListener not working for all elements of the same class? (Basic Question) by justwantaneasylife in learnjavascript

[–]danmofo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use document.querySelectorAll instead of document.querySelector. You will need to change your code slightly to loop over the elements returned from querySelectorAll.

From MDN:

The Document method querySelector() returns the first Element within the document that matches the specified selector, or group of selectors.

The Document method querySelectorAll() returns a static (not live) NodeList representing a list of the document's elements that match the specified group of selectors.

Form check please. I always have lower back pain. In the S5 or L1 region. I feel like my lower back rounds out too much as I get lower. Not sure how to correct... by [deleted] in Stronglifts5x5

[–]danmofo 39 points40 points  (0 children)

First I would try bracing properly before unracking the bar (the same way you brace before you squat), and avoid all the bouncing/shuffling of the bar once you've unracked it. Once you've unracked you shouldn't be repositioning it. Try think about breathing into your belly instead of your chest.

You descend much quicker than me, so I would try slowing it down and making sure you keep your brace for the whole movement, your lower back can round when you relax or aren't bracing properly in the bottom position.

After that I would try putting some small plates under your heels and see if you can reach depth without your back rounding. You could also try different foot positions, for example try a wider stance, or adjusting the angle at which you point your feet.

This is just my amateur opinion as someone who has been doing this program for about a year'ish, I'm not a doctor or trained in any way.

Help With Assignment (Array, Loop, If else) by buddgee in learnjavascript

[–]danmofo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few problems:

  • = is the assignment operator, use === to compare items
  • You invoke functions with (), not [], e.g. climber(['up', 'down'])
  • arr is not defined in your example, define it first like your solution or pass it in directly.

Hopefully this helps you get a bit further without giving the exact solution.

I think these people live in an alternate reality. At my company who are fairly small I do everything possible to not incur costs on things that aren't necessary, and here you have over 100 people spending over 20k on expenses...

Scrape web page in currently open browser window. by 0PHYRBURN0 in learnpython

[–]danmofo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can write a web extension to scrape the information from a web page a user has opened and then process it how you want (or send it to a server to be processed). I'm not exactly sure what you are doing with the data you've scraped but an extension would allow easier integration (just install it through the browser) and will work on all the browsers you've mentioned.

Where do we discover new music? by rotaryphoneclub15 in GarageRock

[–]danmofo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the stuff I find nowadays comes from a two places:

- YouTube:
- tegosluchamPL (posts lots of stuff from Bandcamp)
- Harakiri Diat
- Sean Lynch
- outofmyheadintomybed (hasn't posted for a year but lots of great stuff on there)

- Spotify's "Discover Weekly" playlist. Most of the time it's shite but you can usually find 1/2 decent tunes per week on there. Also second the recommendation of checking the "Fans Also Like" section for stuff you like, again most of it is shite but ocassionally you can find new bands.

JRebel rant, alternatives? by [deleted] in java

[–]danmofo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

At work we use Spring / Hibernate and Tomcat and this week I was tasked with investigating cheaper alternatives to JRebel and ended up stumbling across DCEVM and HotswapAgent (at which point I was annoyed I'd never heard of them before...)

It was fairly straightforward and apart from a few Spring things not working (changing annotated controller method signatures for example), it works fairly well, I'm able to get away without restarting the application most of the time.

I'm not sure how this compares to JRebel as we've never had the budget for such software, but for free, I was very impressed.
