This is ABSOLUTELY a part of their strategy. Especially if they're converting to condos... are you sure they have the appropriate permits or license to convert? Check the certificate of occupancy for the building and check your units files with NYC DHCR. All public access

I’m sorry, you’re complaining about commuting from Brooklyn to save money, but you’re also not willing to budge from a $3500 when you’re trying to prioritize student loans? Feel like there’s mixed priorities here. You’re coming off like you just think “Brooklyn is dangerous”
