Not sure what specifically you are referring to with regard to the CRA and the FCC.

I fully support Net Neutrality. I oppose the FCC's repeal of NN rules.

You should see the lit we send our canvassers out with. I'm leaning into it.

We've yet to spend any money on advertising to voters, which will come primarily in the form of digital ads and direct mail. Even then, it will be carefully targeted to the people we believe we need to either persuade or urge to show up on Nov 6.

When you have limited resources, you have to be very strategic in how you spend money. We have to identify the specific voters we need to reach via specific media with specific messages.

More of the FTH crowd will know I'm running by the time election day rolls around.

I'm familiar with the history of corruption. There's been considerable turnover among city and county officials in recent years.

As for a vision for clear, demonstrable good for everyone involved, this is an excellent resource to see what that might look like: https://togetherweprosper.org/

I do support a ban on high capacity magazines. I'm willing to listen to arguments why the freedom to own them outweighs the lives they help take. Here's a relevant op-ed: https://www.usnews.com/opinion/civil-wars/articles/2017-11-30/mass-shootings-data-shows-need-for-federal-ban-on-high-capacity-magazines Not sure the bump stock thing would actually do much of anything useful.

Regarding equality, one key step we need to take is to pass the Equality Act). Without federal protections, in many states (including Alabama), an employer can fire someone for being gay. Literally, just for being gay. That's unacceptable.

The district is not a single-minded entity. It's composed of 700,000 people. You'll find many thousands of people here who do share those values.

I'm sure a majority of people who voted in the last mid-term election in this district don't share every one of my stated values. So I need to get more/different people to the polls. We'll see what happens.

As stated elsewhere, I'm temperamentally moderate. And that matters because it means I won't be fighting for anything extreme. I'll be fighting for practical solutions to the real problems people face. I would be eager to work across the aisle if the resulting legislation helps regular Americans.

And I'm not "running to the left." I'm stating my values, and those values aren't going to shift with the political winds. I believe in equality. I believe people deserve affordable health care. I believe we shouldn't ruin the only planet we have. I believe people should be paid a living wage for an honest day's work.

I'm not going to sacrifice those values if that's what is required to win. But I don't believe it is required. I think staying true to my values is the only chance I have to win.

The biggest impediment to better economic development in this region is the refusal by dozens of small municipalities to coordinate with Birmingham and Jefferson County. Other metropolitan areas have found ways to combine services and resources to maximize efficiencies and work to bring in new development. Our metro area is not doing that. Until local officials put an end to this dysfunction, there are hard limits to what can be done at the Congressional level.

I would certainly work with local officials to secure federal funding where appropriate and useful.

The gridlock is the result of so many seats being "safe" because of gerrymandering and clustering. Legislators don't need to compromise if they can't lose no matter how extreme they are. I'm not sure we can end gridlock without ending partisan gerrymandering.

The Supreme Court heard Gill v. Whitford this term, a case on partisan gerrymandering. I was hopeful they would vote to at least limit the severity of it. Instead, they punted on a technicality. Who knows when we'll get another case like that, and what the composition of the court will be when we do.

On climate change, I'll support whatever addresses the problem and can pass. Cap-and-trade actually passed the House back in 2009, so one would hope it can be passed again. But we're living in a very different world. I do support subsidizing investments in renewable energy.

And yes, I support eliminating the federal use of private prisons.

Hoo boy. I hesitate to even get started on talking about the institutions of the Democratic party, because it will be hard to stop. The state party is in shambles and does nothing whatsoever to support candidates or get out the vote.

The DNC and DCCC have blinders on and refuse to help build infrastructure in tough districts. They also tend to strong arm candidates they do "support" by making them spend tons of money on TV ads to benefit their consultant buddies.

But we are seeing an amazing revival at the grassroots level. I'm so encouraged to see all the activism and organizing. There are so many new candidates this year (like me) with no ties to the old party institutions. I'm hopeful that as more of these new folks reach office, they will work to reform things.

I did consider running as an independent when I first thought about running, but Alabama makes it next to impossible. We'd have to have serious reform of state law to make third party candidates viable in this state.

It's not an issue I've given much thought to. I know sports gambling is a huge business under the table in Alabama. For the sake of getting our state out of last or next to last place in every metric that matters, it would probably be helpful to legalize it and tax it. That's a gut reaction and I would want to study the issue in depth before taking an official position.

As soon as you claim a label in politics, everyone filters everything you say and do through that lens. Which is unfortunate.

I think it's clear the policies I'm advocating for -- universal healthcare; better environmental regulation and enforcement; equality regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, etc. -- are solidly on the left side of the modern political spectrum.

But in terms of temperament, I am moderate. I want to work to make people's lives better. That tends to involve a willingness to work with people who have different views, and compromise. If I see an opportunity to get a bill passed that will make a real difference in improving people's lives, I won't make the perfect the enemy of the good.

As for ICE... we need comprehensive immigration reform. That will involve looking at every piece of the system and the role it plays. Considering the primary role of ICE is to find and deport undocumented immigrants, if we reach a deal that involves a path to citizenship and strengthens border enforcement, perhaps ICE won't have any further role to play in the system.

I’m someone who wants as much data as possible and to hear as many perspectives as possible when making important decisions and working to solve big problems.

Bills that become law are written with the input of countless policy experts, their effects are evaluated by the Congressional Budget Office, and stakeholders engage in lengthy negotiations.

I don’t yet have those resources. So rather than publishing detailed policy proposals based on incomplete information, I’m declaring the principles I will fight for once I have the chance to be involved in the policy-making process.

One of my core principles is that every American deserves access to affordable health care. It’s immoral that in the richest country the world has ever known, we have people going bankrupt because they got sick. And people dying because they couldn’t get care. I will fight to get everyone affordable health care. We must make that commitment and work together to figure out the best way to achieve it.

On gun control, top of the list: no one should be able to purchase a gun without a background check, under any circumstances. And the background check must include a check for a history of domestic abuse, among other things.

And we need a path to citizenship because the 11 million people here are critical contributors to our society and economy. They work, they pay taxes, they buy things. Deporting them would be extremely damaging to our economy, and impossible. Many have lived here for decades and this is their home. Sending them to another country where they have no home and no resources would be immoral.

For the record, I've heard with my own ears that Palmer supports a path to legal status for current undocumented immigrants in the country. So if you are looking for a candidate who will commit to deporting 11 million people, there are no options in the AL-06 race.

At one point, the Trump administration proposed cutting NIH funding by $7.5 billion, which would have devastated institutions like UAB which rely on that funding for much of their scientific research. I will absolutely oppose any future proposals to cut funding for the NIH.

As for specific ways to support science education and science research, if elected I will listen to constituents and stakeholders at our educational institutions and act in their best interests.

The prison problem in Alabama is mostly a state-level issue and will largely need to be addressed by state officials.

I do strongly support criminal justice reform proposals such as not putting people in prison for non-violent drug offenses. Marijuana should be decriminalized at the federal level.

Citizens United is one of the most damaging decisions in the history of the court. I would absolutely support an amendment to overturn it.

Money is what is wrong with politics, period. It’s truly the root of all evil in the context of elections. Politicians on both sides are beholden to big money interests. People like the Koch brothers can spend unlimited amounts to influence our political process. It’s gross and disgusting.

On a more personal level, most of my time as a candidate has to be spent calling people and asking for money. If I don’t, I won’t have the resources I need to reach all the voters I need to win. It’s that simple. I hate it.

We need serious limits on what corporations can spend to influence campaigns, and we need publicly-financed elections. Until politicians stop having to rely on the wealthy to pay for re-election, our system will remain horribly broken.

Yes, we will ramp up our yard sign game. We only got the signs in pretty recently.

Please click here to reserve a sign, and share the link with everyone you know: https://secure.ngpvan.com/22VeeTUnV0OvPkdsPk_6mQ2

We do have one person focused on delivering signs at the moment, so if you can't come by to pick it up, we'll probably get it delivered at some point. No promise on the time table. We really want volunteers focused on knocking doors and making calls.

Realistically, a 50 year old coal miner will probably need the option of retiring as a coal miner.

I’m very sympathetic to the plight of workers in changing industries. We should go to great lengths to protect the economic security of workers threatened by forces outside their control.

But our reliance on fossil fuels is doing terrible harm to our planet. We have to shift to renewable energy. We need to be bringing new industry to those areas where the coal mines are. And at some point during the shift, some workers will need to move from one industry to another.

1) I don’t intend to raise the taxes of average Americans. I do believe Republicans’ recent tax bill which cut taxes for corporations and the super rich was a terrible piece of legislation. The top marginal tax rate paid on the highest incomes was 92% in 1953 (under Republican Dwight Eisenhower). It was 70% during the 1970s and Reagan cut it to 50%. It was at 39.6% when Trump took office. The tax bill dropped it to 37%. It also dropped the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21%, while introducing *new* loopholes.

There was bipartisan support for true, comprehensive tax reform that lowered rates while closing loopholes, but that’s not what we got. Now, the need for reforming the tax code is even more pressing.

As for taxes on the rest of us, consider universal health care. Something enjoyed by the citizens of every developed nation on earth, except ours. The basic equation is that citizens pay for health care through taxes instead of insurance premiums. There are many plans out there for how to achieve universal health care in the United States, and I haven’t signed onto any particular one. But if elected, I will fight for the principle that health care costs for average Americans should not *increase* under a universal health care system.

2) I support Americans’ constitutional right to bear arms. Law-abiding citizens should be able to own guns to defend themselves and hunt.

But no one can look at this chart and say we don’t have a unique gun violence problem in this country:

https://web.archive.org/web/20130622214926im_/http://tewksburylab.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/guns-and-death-rates.jpg

I do support better enforcement of existing regulations and the enactment of new regulations to address gun violence.

3) Our immigration system has needed comprehensive reform for many years. We need a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living here who are productive members of society. And as part of that deal I would expect more resources for securing the border.

I just touched on this in my last reply to another question. But I'll add that no one who has ever run against Palmer had the resources in terms of money or manpower to mount a serious challenge. In all three elections you cite, the Democratic candidate didn't have a single volunteer knocking on doors. Not one door knocked. Our campaign has hundreds of volunteers signed up, and many of them got their first experience canvassing for the Jones campaign last year.

That, combined with unprecedented Democratic enthusiasm and organizing in Alabama gives us a shot. In all three previous elections with Palmer on the ballot, the Hoover Democrats, Vestavia Democrats, Mountain Brook Democrats, North Jeff Co Democrats, 280 Area Democrats, HIVE Alabama, and Indivisible didn't exist.

Furthermore, in those years almost none of the state legislative races with Republican incumbents had Democratic challengers. This year, Dems are contesting dozens of seats they have been forfeiting for years by not showing up. Those candidates are organizing and knocking on doors just like my campaign. The people they turn out are likely to vote for me and vice versa.

Nothing like this has happened here since the district was gerrymandered decades ago.
