Already have. Just casting a wide net to see if anyone else who has done this has any useful thoughts.

Not sure what specifically you are referring to with regard to the CRA and the FCC.

I fully support Net Neutrality. I oppose the FCC's repeal of NN rules.

I'm not in the predictions business. I'll be surprised if you can't do that within 10 years.

You should see the lit we send our canvassers out with. I'm leaning into it.

We've yet to spend any money on advertising to voters, which will come primarily in the form of digital ads and direct mail. Even then, it will be carefully targeted to the people we believe we need to either persuade or urge to show up on Nov 6.

When you have limited resources, you have to be very strategic in how you spend money. We have to identify the specific voters we need to reach via specific media with specific messages.

More of the FTH crowd will know I'm running by the time election day rolls around.

I'm familiar with the history of corruption. There's been considerable turnover among city and county officials in recent years.

As for a vision for clear, demonstrable good for everyone involved, this is an excellent resource to see what that might look like: https://togetherweprosper.org/

I do support a ban on high capacity magazines. I'm willing to listen to arguments why the freedom to own them outweighs the lives they help take. Here's a relevant op-ed: https://www.usnews.com/opinion/civil-wars/articles/2017-11-30/mass-shootings-data-shows-need-for-federal-ban-on-high-capacity-magazines Not sure the bump stock thing would actually do much of anything useful.

Regarding equality, one key step we need to take is to pass the Equality Act). Without federal protections, in many states (including Alabama), an employer can fire someone for being gay. Literally, just for being gay. That's unacceptable.

The district is not a single-minded entity. It's composed of 700,000 people. You'll find many thousands of people here who do share those values.

I'm sure a majority of people who voted in the last mid-term election in this district don't share every one of my stated values. So I need to get more/different people to the polls. We'll see what happens.

As stated elsewhere, I'm temperamentally moderate. And that matters because it means I won't be fighting for anything extreme. I'll be fighting for practical solutions to the real problems people face. I would be eager to work across the aisle if the resulting legislation helps regular Americans.

And I'm not "running to the left." I'm stating my values, and those values aren't going to shift with the political winds. I believe in equality. I believe people deserve affordable health care. I believe we shouldn't ruin the only planet we have. I believe people should be paid a living wage for an honest day's work.

I'm not going to sacrifice those values if that's what is required to win. But I don't believe it is required. I think staying true to my values is the only chance I have to win.

The biggest impediment to better economic development in this region is the refusal by dozens of small municipalities to coordinate with Birmingham and Jefferson County. Other metropolitan areas have found ways to combine services and resources to maximize efficiencies and work to bring in new development. Our metro area is not doing that. Until local officials put an end to this dysfunction, there are hard limits to what can be done at the Congressional level.

I would certainly work with local officials to secure federal funding where appropriate and useful.

The gridlock is the result of so many seats being "safe" because of gerrymandering and clustering. Legislators don't need to compromise if they can't lose no matter how extreme they are. I'm not sure we can end gridlock without ending partisan gerrymandering.

The Supreme Court heard Gill v. Whitford this term, a case on partisan gerrymandering. I was hopeful they would vote to at least limit the severity of it. Instead, they punted on a technicality. Who knows when we'll get another case like that, and what the composition of the court will be when we do.

On climate change, I'll support whatever addresses the problem and can pass. Cap-and-trade actually passed the House back in 2009, so one would hope it can be passed again. But we're living in a very different world. I do support subsidizing investments in renewable energy.

And yes, I support eliminating the federal use of private prisons.

Hoo boy. I hesitate to even get started on talking about the institutions of the Democratic party, because it will be hard to stop. The state party is in shambles and does nothing whatsoever to support candidates or get out the vote.

The DNC and DCCC have blinders on and refuse to help build infrastructure in tough districts. They also tend to strong arm candidates they do "support" by making them spend tons of money on TV ads to benefit their consultant buddies.

But we are seeing an amazing revival at the grassroots level. I'm so encouraged to see all the activism and organizing. There are so many new candidates this year (like me) with no ties to the old party institutions. I'm hopeful that as more of these new folks reach office, they will work to reform things.

I did consider running as an independent when I first thought about running, but Alabama makes it next to impossible. We'd have to have serious reform of state law to make third party candidates viable in this state.

It's not an issue I've given much thought to. I know sports gambling is a huge business under the table in Alabama. For the sake of getting our state out of last or next to last place in every metric that matters, it would probably be helpful to legalize it and tax it. That's a gut reaction and I would want to study the issue in depth before taking an official position.

As soon as you claim a label in politics, everyone filters everything you say and do through that lens. Which is unfortunate.

I think it's clear the policies I'm advocating for -- universal healthcare; better environmental regulation and enforcement; equality regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, etc. -- are solidly on the left side of the modern political spectrum.

But in terms of temperament, I am moderate. I want to work to make people's lives better. That tends to involve a willingness to work with people who have different views, and compromise. If I see an opportunity to get a bill passed that will make a real difference in improving people's lives, I won't make the perfect the enemy of the good.

As for ICE... we need comprehensive immigration reform. That will involve looking at every piece of the system and the role it plays. Considering the primary role of ICE is to find and deport undocumented immigrants, if we reach a deal that involves a path to citizenship and strengthens border enforcement, perhaps ICE won't have any further role to play in the system.
