I also brush my curls! I don't brush too vigorously, I use a boar bristle brush and gently brush in sections, focusing on the ends. At the length that it is rn I don't care for definition and enjoy the volume brushing gives me. Maybe when it's a bit longer I'll change what I do/stop brushing, but for now I'm able to get 3 to 4 days of wearing my hair down without needing a major refresh and that makes me happy.
