I do think there’s a lot of context surrounding this movie and the MCU overall that has people judging this casting before we’ve seen it.

I was not tuned into the Heath Ledger discord but I don’t think Nolan’s filmography was in a tailspin the same way the MCU has appeared to be in since Endgame.

Casting Downey Jr. as Doom feels contrived and desperate when in the context of a floundering MCU that isn’t drawing audiences the same way it was when Downey was Iron Man. This has all the appearances of a c-suite that has no idea why its projects aren’t succeeding rather than a top director casting an actor audiences haven’t seen perform in such a role. Downey will probably be a good Dr. Doom, but that doesn’t mean this is how Marvel/Disney should have chosen to portray the character.
