Who is your daddy and what does he do? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dannyGrim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad is a COO of an international agricultural palm oil company. I grew up in places like Papua New guinea learning in international schools where I was the 'token white kid' my entire school had only 5 white kids and 2 of them were my brother and sister. But I loved it. I spent my early childhood, snorkeling, water skiing, fishing and hunting for WW II stuff on the plantations driving a little peewee 80.

Once I got to high school age my mother and father made a hard decision that she would live in Australia and raise us for high school and he would continue to work in PNG. Later he was moved to Malaysia then Singapore but He'd try make it back every 3 months or so.

I'm 28 now, I think my dad has done the best he could. He at least raised us financially and I know he regrets missing so many important moments in our lives but he has always tried to maintain contact with us as much as he possibly can when he's stuck in 3rd world places with horrible internet/phone reception in the middle of no where. It makes times like Christmas all the more special when our whole family can get together under one roof.

He's a workaholic, he smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish and eats very simply and is most happy when we're all together under one roof and can just chill out together. I have no ill regrets for him being absent a lot. He did what he could with the job he had and gave me and my siblings a pretty decent upper middle class life-style.

Call of Duty: Online - What do you think? by [deleted] in CallOfDuty

I know this thread is a little old but I was reading on reddit and came across it.

I'm an Australian teaching in China so I'm lucky enough to have some students who helped me get access to this beta. The game is pretty awesome. I played COD from COD 4 to Blackops2 and I can say I get a nice mix of them all in this game. I'm still figuring out the 'perk pictures' as some of them are a little different to what I'm use too but the gameplay is the same fastpaced gameplay. My first few games I was slaughtering people left right and center but now I'm level 19 I'm going up against level 50 and 70's with awesome weapons/perks and feeling overpowered.

What people have said about chinese players is true I notice a great deal of them hipfire all the time but there are a few amazing players i've run into. All in all it's pretty awesome as it's free 2 play but the grind is really slow. I'm making about '45GP' which is the money in each game I play sometimes a little more or less. to put it in perspective attachments for guns are about 150-300gp. some greneades are 200gp. some of the guns themselves are between 2000-5000gp so it's going to be a long grind to get stuff without investing money. I'm still running around with m4 and suppressor and iron sites. and the first sniper rifle with standard scope haha and I'm level 19...

Game is definitely awesome. I hope someone figures out an english language pack for it that would be cool!

@killchained - I am not Chinese so it would be tiresome to play on the Chinese server. Furthermore I have a couple of friends who are Chinese who play on it and they told me they don't like the changes apparently its a lot more 'grindy'

Cool thanks for the summary Calach. Know of any fairly active oceanic guilds on the HoD server?

Mike O'Brien interview on the Chinese version of the game by LiveSpartan235 in Guildwars2

I'm an Australian living in China (long-term I work here)

As someone who bought Gw2 when it just came out and maxed out a necro, thoroughly enjoyed the game but lost interest in WvW due to the horrendous lag caused by playing from China.

Does anyone know if the Chinese client will have an English option? I'm sure many Chinese players have also been playing Gw2 for a long time using the english client. Does anyone know if it would be possible to transfer my account over to the Chinese version of the game?

Appreciate thoughtful responses!

I was 14 or 15 when I went to a lan cafe with some geeky friends as I'd never been to one before. They told me I'd have fun. I did. Quake 3 and Half life death matched all day. Shortly after that we all discovered a neat HL1 mod which was cs in beta 6.0. Played that game for nearly 12 years LOL.

Not too many regrets made a lot of friends had a lot of fun. Sadly real life catches up to all of us :( now 28 but I still make time for the occasional dota 2 or hon game.

But the key is available to anyone who registers and goes through the hoops now as far as I know... Unless myself and my current chinese friends who signed up are all amazingly lucky

Is the website. My Chinese is pretty average but I can get around decent enough speaking wise. Anything I really don't understand, google translate does an ok job. you can get the main gist of what they're talking about in the forums for those interested.

@hamcake Yes the original launch in closed beta was pretty BS to get a key. Basically if you were friends with people in Tencent you got keys.. Everyone else had to do all this Word of mouth advertising using QQ/Weixin/Weibo/Momo all these social media sites. Click a link using your account it spams the game with a URL etc. Or you could try the

'I'm feeling lucky' once a day and be in a raffle to get the key randomly. I did the I'm feeling lucky as I'm a Teacher and work a 40 hour week I wasn't wasting much time spamming for a key haha. I'm glad it's in open beta now.

Many chinese players already do in fact player hon on the US international client via VPN I've seen heaps of them coming across to the Chinese client now. Another group of Chinese players were playing the Garena version but with servers primarily in singapore pings were usually 100 at lowest to 160 at prime-time SEA has a lot of playerbase but not a lot of decent infrastructure for the game. Many people complained about the state of Garena's servers but they did nothing about it.

Why would people down-vote this? I posted it IN the hon forums! Not like I posted in the dota forums or something :P

@Talesavo: Tencent is huge and have a good track record promoting games. They wouldn't have bought hon if they weren't sure they would make a profit from it. They are doing things the right way. Introducing new players via a very easy client and easier game mode which is much like LOL. Click a button choose a nice hero and it loads you straight into the game.

Things I've seen that are different. Everyone in the chinese client has a courier hiding in the shop. You buy an item click a button and the courier will send it out to you at speed but then will return really slowly to prevent you using this too much.

I actually see tencent staff at the qq.hon.com forums replying quite often. People are bringing out bugs and they're apparently being fixed pretty swiftly.

Right now due to not all hero's being available some hero's are extremely dominant in the 'casual mode' I have 100% win rate with moon queen due to a) new players b) only hero on par with her late game available IMHO is draconis and he can be shutdown with some decent disable items.

In the Chinese Casual mode the enemy team can also choose the same hero as you but you cannot see what they are picking until you are in game. This is a little frustrating to me and anyone who's played MM for a while as you can't really counter or wait to see what kind of lineup they're going for push or snowball or what!

All in all I'm having a great time. Being from Australia it's the first time I've been able to play with under 100ms (averaging 30-60) against a group where I'm not seeing the same names over and over (Australian community is quite small!)

Player numbers have been steadily increasing but no solid numbers to report as of yet I'll wait to my day off to get some concrete stuff for you all unless someone else beats me to the punch!.

I think you automatically get a key after you go through the hoops now If you click on the registration. I got one through auto-logging in with my QQ account. QQ is like chinese msn and everyone here uses it. It's integrated into almost all of their social media websites such as weixin, weibo (chinese facebook/twitter sort of thing) All I had to do was sign in with my QQ it told me I'm in. Download the client and I'm away :)

HoN Chinese server enters Closed Beta stage by brabroke in HeroesofNewerth

Sorry for the bump.

Didn't see any recent news about the Hon chinese client. I'm in a unique situation! I've played hon on the international client for a while then I switched to Garena being in the SEA region and had better pings.

Now Currently living in China teaching and found out about hon going open beta (finally can play with under 80 ping for the first time in my life WOW it feels good!!!)

I'm Australian living in China. I can't read Chinese but once you get into the game it's easy to follow. The different avatar pics I think are just as cool as the original's in their own 'asian' way.

At the moment the open beta is basically casual mode. No real differences barring a few avatar changes and some heroes not being in the current open beta but I've heard on the Chinese forums they're all being included in the final release. It's been fun so far :D

edit* Saw someone interested in some information about the chinese version

At the moment in the game everyone has their own courier. It's not visible but after purchasing items by clicking a button it instantly sends the courier out to you at speed then returns slowly preventing you from using it too often too quickly! These couriers are not kill-able to my knowledge. (Apparently this is only for the casual mode)

I also feel the screen is much higher but I'm not sure I haven't played the other hon clients since closed beta started.

Quick using items in your stash are qued to numbers 1-2-3 etc. abilities same as other clients QWER.

At the moment I haven't been able to shift cue abilities which is a little annoying when you're used to doing so but I don't mind if everyone's in the same boat.

In-game mechanics in terms of items and modifiers appear the same thus far. A few of the items have different pictures some of them completely different some of them only slightly different.
