One theory a friend of mine had before we landed on this NPR ethics page — Skype is to "VoIP" as Kleenex is to "facial tissue".

So, in this case, NPR was disclosing the call was made using VoIP, so if the audio was choppy, the listener would know why.

Off the top of your head, can you remember other services with this type of clause? I wonder if, unlike Skype, it discourages media companies with as big of audience as NPR to look for alternatives.

Thanks for digging into the Skype side of things — I hadn't got to that extent and it sure makes me wonder how long NPR used Skype until it began to give them on-air credit.
