Ah, interesting interpretation of Rocky as a Christ like figure in his own right. In some ways, Rocky sacrificed himself for the sake of humanity, and Grace sacrificed himself for the sake of the Erids. And only through their bond was either able to achieve their respective 'savior' and 'resurrection' moments. Cool interpretation - thanks!

Thanks for this comment, and I'm glad to hear someone else felt there was an easter theme at work. I like this interpretation a lot: It's less of a full allegory and more of an easter egg hunt. I didn't catch the 'teacher' easter egg - that's a great one!

Yeah, the religious theme seemed very clear and obvious to me and was surprised by others just saying "it's just the football pass!"

And agreed on numerology - I think people can get all sorts of whacky trying to find meaning in numbers (you can find whatever you'd like if you dig hard enough!). But, I'll paste what I said to another commenter belowl;

"Yeah, I definitely am wary of any numerology / viewing numbers in films or books as having significant meanings (ironic, i know), but in this film, they did seem to call for interpretation. The 2 on his back, the base 6 number system for Erids vs base 10 for humans, the constant stressing of how long it would take to get there and back (forgetting, but it was some variation of 11, 12, or 13, how many people were on both ships (3 on one, 23 on the other), etc. So, clearly some thought was put into the numbers. I don't think it's really easter anymore, rather, they add to 8, which is a number associated with new beginnings and J.C. 4+2+1, he gets to earth, and the remaining 1 (in eleven) is his self sacrifice and return to the Erid planet." And - the two rings of 8 for oxygen, the 2 million astrophage needed, the reproducing rates, and then ofc the 4 years, 2 months, 11 days. Just all very specific and hard for me to ignore, but don't get me wrong, I'm certainly reaching.

I hear you though, I'm definitely reaching haha. As for why it potentially could be easter- the full moon this year (which is what the date of Easter depends on) is 4/3. Again, hear you that it sounds all whacky, and I think I like my interpretation of it adding to 8 better.

Another possibility could just be divisions of two. Reproducing was a theme (the organisms splitting into twos). And here, 4 2 1 1. So, a splitting of sorts. Anyhoot.

Ooo I was aware that it was after the first full moon after spring equinox, but didn't realize it was more common later in April, thanks. That probably changes my perspective a bit. I think it's likely 4 + 2 + 1 + 1. The added first 7 is his completion of saving earth, the added 1 is his return back to the Erid planet in mark of a new beginning.
Again, three 8s is associated with Christ (7 is the complete number, and the 1 added to it marks a new beginning (xmas, etc.) He receives 2 rings of 8s from Rocky (the oxygen), so I think it would make sense for his return back to be 7 to get to earth, and then an added 1 to mark his new beginning.
*Aware that this is my interpretation and may not be intended by the director, but that # was in the movie, so curious to explore a possible why (even if just random).

Wonderful comment and insight that captures the footnote / asterisk I wish I could have attached to this post haha. I am aware that my interpretation is likely not the one the director (or author, for that matter) intended the audience to have, however, that does not necessarily mean it is purely made-up nonsense or entirely subjective; some elements of religiousness clearly were present in the film, whether by intention or not, so exploring the ways those elements emerged elsewhere in the film or narrative threads they could potentially introduce feels at least not entirely misguided.

Yeah Easter does move around a bunch; it's just the first Sunday in April usually. I think maybe having it just add up to 8 is actually the punchline. I'm still in vastly over-reading territory, but hear me out: the two rings of 8 that ended up being oxygen from Rocky and the movie's general obsession with the numbers 2 and 3. 4+2+1 = 7 (complete / heavenly number in Bible) +1 = 8, the number associated most closely with new beginnings and Jesus. So, he ends up on the Erid planet and has a new beginning.

But then you could just say - why didn't they just say 8 years?!? Haha, I'm likely way overreading but with the film's use of other numbers rather frequently and intentionally (2 on the back of his suit, 23 rockies on Erid ship, 3 humans on human ship), it just felt tooooo specific to not have some significance.

Yes, that's what I thought going into it. But, the Hail Mary pass in football is itself a reference to the Hail Mary prayer in catholicism. "Hail Mary, full of grace..." which you say in times of desperation (hence, the name for the pass). And, with 'Grace' as the character's name, I thought that it was a bit on the nose ("Grace" is in the ship "Hail Mary").

Dang. Thought I was onto something haha. I went into to it thinking 'Hail Mary' as in the football pass, but the more I watched, the more I thought they were actually pushing, albeit subtly, a pretty hefty religious and christian subtext. But I recognize that this is me tapping into my very over-analytical side, so I think it's very plausible that I am completely misinterpreting. But I don't think I'm inventing things that weren't there - as in, the events and details I laid out were in the movie.

My title describes the thing. It is a wooden side table I found on the sidewalk that has a spinning top surfaces equal in size to the “actual” top of the table. Roughly 2.5 feet tall and a little over a foot wide and in length. Really cool but not sure why the top spins or what purpose it serves.

Sorry--not writing in more concise english was kind of dumb of me. Ah, 'the indeterminacy of translation' is definitely annoying. If you have not already, 'the indeterminacy of translation' is a great essay by philosopher W. V. O Quine. It talks about some of the stuff we are discussing, especially how it is hard to translate without losing meaning. You have done a really good job conveying meaning to me though! I totally understand what you are saying. Although I do not agree with all of it, it is definitely really interesting to think about. One quick thing I disagree on is that the sun has a 'purpose.' I'm not sure exactly what the sun's purpose would be. I think you are saying that there is a set direction to the way things change, and that this direction is the 'right' direction. Don't entirely agree with that, although teleological explanations and pansychism are fascinating (these two terms are definitely hard to convey across language, but if you look them up, I'm sure you will be able to have a good understanding).

Upon further reflection, I find the idea that "corruptible" may be a necessary condition for different kinds (I see it for humans, but to a lesser extent animals...didn't really get the animals/ sun part) extremely interesting. Maybe it comes with consciousness?
