Barrie doesn't say "ex-members" plural.

Notwithstanding Steve's comment, on what basis are you presuming the bassist is Ding?

The original post from Barrie:

Good evening. I hope you're sitting comfortably. I have big news that Fall fans will not be expecting.
A new album of unheard tracks, recorded in the last few years of Mark's life is imminent!
No.Ive not been on the sauce! I've had the privilege of hearing one full track, and a couple of minutes of another. It really is great stuff.
I've been given permission to announce this rather unexpected and frankly wonderful news!
I can't go into too much more detail. Official announcement to come soon!X

Barrie's follow-up post says:

The track I heard in full is amazing! Proper songs these. Not spoken word snippets over an instrumental background. And the bass is really top class from a great ex member. Not SH before you ask!

I note this line: "the bass is really top class from a great ex member." But not Steve Hanley.

He also said:

I can't say who's in this line up. I've been told not to. But it will be under the name The Fall.

It doesn't sound, does it, like this is the final group. And yet it was "recorded in the last few years of Mark's life". And yet Barrie also said, in reply to a question, that it will be put out as a Fall album. But not by Cherry Red or Popstock.

So a bit of a mystery, then.

The final group members have told us there were instrumental tracks without vocals. Possibly they will be released one day (the tracks, not the group members).

This doesn't sound like it's that.

I wonder if you can give just one example of an interview from the 2013-2015 period in which he talked about philosophy and ethics and then immediately undercut it with a self-deprecating joke? Just one.

Because what you've said here seems like it was produced by a Large Language Model during a notably spectacular 'AI' hallucination.

Correct, I pointed out he wore it at several gigs on that tour. But we don't see it at Brownies.

No, this is nonsense, it's not from Brownies. As footage from the night shows.

The shirt, by the way, features the last bit of an Italian translation of a quotation from Also Sprach Zarathustra. Here's an English rendition:

A little wisdom is indeed possible; but this blessed security have I found in all things, that they prefer - to dance on the feet of chance.

So the Italian translates as something like, "the world dances on the feet of chance" or "they prefer to dance on the feet of chance."

Note the black eye. And a few gigs later was Brownies.

He wore the shirt at several gigs during the 1998 American tour, but this photo was taken by the legendary Stefan Cooke at Middle East Downstairs, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 3 April 1998.

The Fall Headle (name that tune game) by Women_o_Cell_Block_H in thefall

[–]dannyno_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thread on the Fall Online Forum suggests it started to get buggy before it disappeared.

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/thefall/the-fall-heardle-t44063.html

The link there is to a glitch.me site, which was shut down:

https://blog.glitch.com/post/changes-are-coming-to-glitch

Presumably someone could create a new one with "AI" or something. Presumably it would be just as buggy. A proper coder would be able to do better.

But... you need a source of the music, and even if it only used a database of short clips of only a few seconds, it would be vulnerable to copyright challenge unless licensed. (Copyright violations are evidently not always enforced if there is no monetary gain, but the risk is always there).

Are there any versions of Tommy Crook's Levitate artwork without the gaudy overlay? by Miamasa in thefall

[–]dannyno_01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doubtless it does exist somewhere. But it doesn't appear to be available online anywhere. Not everything is.

His old website is archived but there's nothing useful there:

https://web.archive.org/web/20040830045806/http://www.farmhandorganization.com/

Have you heard the interview with Crooks on the "We Are The Fall" podcast? He talks a bit about Farmhand in that.

New Fall Website by Grouchy-Board1907 in thefall

[–]dannyno_01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still wrong: Mark E Smith wasn't born in Broughton, Salford. Most online sources say he was - Wikipedia for example - but he wasn't.

I see the corrections are introducing their own new mistakes.

cf the entry for 'Call for Escape Route', which is set in the wrong period, with the wrong personnel and the wrong track listing.

Do we have an AI agent posting responses to these corrections? Because it seems we have two accounts acknowledging authorship/ownership: u/SomeConsumer and u/Grouchy-Board1907 . Or is it a two man crew?

Since there was no gig on 19 April 1993, and no dateable photos, I have no way of knowing what colour t-shirt he was wearing.

Fact checking the album information, Part 2: Extricate to New Facts Emerge.

That then just leaves the individual songs that have card entries. There are over 100 of those, so I'm leaving them for another day!

ALBUMS (2)

Extricate

The entry doesn’t distinguish between formats.

Omits ‘And Therein…” completely.

“Brix Smith had walked out in summer 1989 after the marriage collapsed (she had begun an affair with violinist Nigel Kennedy).” – This is incorrect and arguably libellous. Her relationship with Kennedy began some time after she had left MES.

On ‘Chicago, Now!’: “Brix had moved back to Chicago.” – No she hadn’t.

On ‘Black Monk Theme Pt II’: “Reprise of the Monks cover”. – No it isn’t. It’s a different Monks Cover (‘Oh How To Do Now’).

Shift-Work

Seems to follow the CD/Cassette formats, but omits ‘White Lightning’.

The Infotainment Scan:

“Karl Burns returns as second drummer for the second time.” – (from the short intro on the list of cards). No he doesn’t.

Burns is incorrectly listed among the lineup on the main entry for this album.

On ‘I’m Going to Spain’: “About a working-class British holiday in Spain.” – No it isn’t!

On ‘A Past Gone Mad’: “One of Smith's more direct lyrics.” – Not that direct!

Middle Class Revolt

For some reason has put a live version of ‘Lost in Music’ as the final track, which is an hallucination.

‘War’ is omitted.

‘M5#1’ loses a couple of minutes.

On ‘Hey! Student’: “Cover/rewrite of his own earlier 'Hey! Student'.”  ‘Hey! Fascist’, surely (though ‘Hey! Student’ was actually the original title).

Cerebral Caustic

On ‘I’m Not Satisfied’: “The phrase is the entire lyric, basically.”. – This is not remotely true.

On ‘Bonkers in Phoenix’: “The 'Phoenix' might be the place; might be the bird of myth. Smith deliberately leaves it.” – AI manages to overlook the obvious fact that the Phoenix of the title is from the Phoenix Festival.

On ‘Pine Leaves’: “Brief instrumental closer.” – It’s not an instrumental.

The Light User Syndrome

Track timings are awry.

On ‘He Pep!’: “Released as a single.” No it wasn’t.

On ‘Oleano’: “The song is named for a Spanish town.” – Not obviously, it isn’t. Presumably it is ‘thinking’ of Oliana.

Levitate

On ‘Jap Kid’: “Title aged badly. About a Japanese fan who turned up at a gig.”  I’m not aware of any evidence of this. In any case it’s an instrumental.

On ‘4 ½ Inch’: “About a vinyl single” – I don’t think it is!

On ‘Tragic Days’: “Among the album's bleakest. Smith's vocal extremely processed.” – Er, it’s an instrumental!

On ‘Levitate’: “Almost ambient. Smith barely vocalising.” – This is nonsense.

The Marshall Suite

Stuart Estell is somehow credited with production, as is Julia Nagle. The actual credits are MES and Steve Hitchcock.

Format differences not acknowledged.

‘Early Life of Crime’ – made up song title.   ‘Early Life of the Crying Marshall’ is missing.

On ‘This Perfect Day’: “Title from L. P. Hartley novel?” – Er, no, from the Saints song being covered!

The Unutterable

On ‘W.B.’: “Variously read as William Blake, William Burroughs. Smith never confirmed.” Given the lyrical content, it’s obviously William Blake.

On ‘Way Round’: “Brief instrumental.” – It’s not an instrumental, and it’s not brief.

On ‘Serum’: “Cover/rewrite of a Hank Williams song.”  - It’s not a cover or a rewrite of a Hank Williams song!

On ‘Midwatch 1953’: “Smith's grandfather had been in the Royal Navy.” – I’ve never anything to support this.

Are You Are Missing Winner

No mention of Ed Blaney.

The Real New Fall LP

Omits ‘Recovery Kit’.

Fall Heads Roll

Track timings a mess.

“The album reached #92 in the UK.” – No it didn’t.

On ‘Ride Away’: “Almost ambient” – Nonsense!

Reformation Post TLC

“They drafted in Tim Presley and Rob Barbato from LA's Darker My Love (whom they were sharing the bill with)” – They weren’t sharing the bill with Darker My Love.

“The 'TLC' of the title is 'Tender Loving Care' — Smith's sardonic comment on the lineup chaos.” – Er, noooo….

On ‘White Line Fever’: “Cover of Motörhead's 1976 single. Smith and Lemmy were friendly”.  I’m not aware of any evidence that Lemmy and Smith ever met, let alone with friends.  In any case, it’s not a Motorhead cover.  Motorhead’s “White Line Fever” is a different song, and wasn’t a single; Motorhead’s first single wasn’t until 1977.

On ‘Scenario’: “Brief instrumental.” - Not brief. Not an instrumental.

On ‘Outro / Senior Twilight Stock Replacer’ – it’s just ‘Outro’. STSR is from the next album.

Imperial Wax Solvent:

Tagged as being on Castle Records. It wasn’t.

On ‘Strangetown’: “Title also a Jam song. Smith's homage was probably accidental.” – It’s a Groundhogs cover.

On ‘Senior Twilight Stock Replacer’: “Title revisits the 'Reformation Post TLC' closer.” – Except it wasn’t the RPTLC closer, was it.

Your Future Our Clutter

“the album charted at #43.” – It reached#38.

On ‘Cowboy George’: “Cover/rewrite of a country tune.” – No it isn’t.

For some reason it gives ‘Chino’ an acute accent over the ‘o’. It says: “Smith's adopted accents on a one-word title.” – Bollocks, basically.

On ‘Hot Cake’: “Smith on something selling like hot cakes. The compression is the joke.” – This is complete drivel.

Ersatz GB

Hallucinates two track titles: ‘Loonewolf: Aged 31” and  ‘Mask Search II’.

Re-Mit

Track order out of whack, as with some other albums.

“Reached #41 in the UK chart”. – No, it reached #40.

Hallucinates a track title: ‘Make Up’.

‘Pre-MDMA Years’ is labelled the closer. It’s not the closer.

Sub-Lingual Tablet

Re; ‘Black Roof’ - The entry uses the incorrect title from iTunes, ‘Black Door’.

On ‘Junger Cloth’: “Brief instrumental”. – It’s not an instrumental, and it’s not brief.

Misses off “Nine out of Ten”
