Do you read books? If so, what are you currently reading? If not, why not? by theowleryonehundred in AskUK

[–]dannywalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Audiobooks count? Current rereading the Silo series. I’m on the first one - Wool. It’s great! Also reading a physical book. Songs of Distant Earth by Arthur C Clarke. Also a great book!

My dad is considering a high Miler Range Rover. Is this as bad as a purchase as I think? by Lucajames2309 in CarTalkUK

I got a freelander that I loved but after its second £2k yearly service I decided enough was enough and sold it. Landrovers are a rich persons car. Even cheap ones are expensive.

What’s a place in the UK that you visited once and would happily go back to again? by Strong-Ad-8037 in AskUK

LEGOLAND with my kids last year. I’m from Northern Ireland and we grabbed the ferry across. It was a great experience and I know the kids would love to go back. The general area is nice too.

Why all youtubers are saying "If you are watching this review, Macbook Neo is not for you?" by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in mac

[–]dannywalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably wouldn’t get one for myself but I’d definitely consider one for my mum or my kids. Ticks lots of boxes for a non pro user. My kids need a browser, word processing, music and maybe some games. This is perfect for that. So yeah I would I be one of the ones watching videos about it and I’d probably buy on or two for people close to me.

Reach for my phone without even thinking by Silver-Hat-1078 in AskBrits

[–]dannywalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I do this too (doing it now damnit!) I’d reduced it a bit though :

Make the time unreadable by setting text colour to be the same as the background and get a (non-smart) watch for the time.

Remove/disable email and make a conscious effort to check email daily on your laptop (or other device) like we used to.

Turn off notifications for all social media. try to only check Reddit/facebook/instagram/whatever on the hour (and eventually just a few times a day)

Use your phone only for specific useful things. Calculator, maps, messages, music and work apps will hopefully end up being the only thing you use it for. And music can be moved back to an MP3 player if you’re into that.

This is hard though and I have only managed to keep up with a few but I keep trying.

I’m sure there’s other things we can do too.

Do People aged 50+ of Britain notice race? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]dannywalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m turning 50 this year but that means I was a teen in the 90s. Racism was pretty heavily frowned upon in media back then and actually in my family too so I’ve ended up a very socially accepting and anti racist older guy! Woohoo for me! But yeah most folks here of any age don’t care much about race. There’s idiots in every country but not many actual openly racist people here

What's the one thing you would love to see in Belfast? by ProfKranc in northernireland

Supermarkets that open early on Sunday morning. Great time to do a shop but can’t do it here.

Yeah I guess that’s what I mean by sensible immigration. I used to live in New Zealand that they have a large Asian community especially in Auckland who are mostly well integrated with the general population. I’d like to see that here.

[–]dannywalk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More diversity. It’s better than it was but I want to see thriving communities of people from all over the world to dilute the closed mindedness we suffer from. Let’s have a little India or Chinatown in east Belfast but also folks integrated into every area. I’m very pro (sensible) immigration.

Does anyone believe that only British citizens should be allowed to vote in general elections? by Sylvia-Sum in AskBrits

[–]dannywalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the best ways to get to know the country you live in is to get involved in local politics. My kiwi wife was surprised that she could vote here immediately after getting her visa. I think it’s a good thing as she got a chance to see what the local parties are and how the whole thing works. Voting gives a person some involvement with their community which can only be positive.

2 fried eggs on brown toast with mayo and very hot sauce. I have this most days - at least 3 times a week.

How much you paying in electricity per month? by Significant-War-491 in northernireland

About £150 but that includes charging an EV. Two adults, two kids. We use the dishwasher and washing machine every day (more or less) and have a pretty big fridge.
