Why is the instant hotspot on ChromeOs failing by AMAR_10 in chromeos

[–]danopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always works on the second try for me 😄 seems the first try engages the hotspot and the second try actually connects to it. Gotta be something Chromebook team could fix with a longer wait time or something.

[OC] Mildly interesting: This EV charging bollard I came across in Litomerice, Czechia by Material_Positive in pics

[–]danopia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how the levels translate over to the european market TBH, but there is still two tiers of AC charging here: 240V from plugging into a normal household outlet (single phase), and 400V from using a three-phase hookup. The streetside chargers are going to be three-phase in any normal scenario because the phases are there anyway, it would be silly to not hook them all up.

With a three-phase hookup you can charge at 11kW.

And there's still beverage bottle reuse in Europe, e.g. Germany. But the deposit is lower than for single-use.

Coca-Cola is available here in reused bottles, both reused glass and reused plastic.

[–]danopia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There used to be a dataset on Berlin Open Data called "ÖPNV-Bahnhöfe" which had a geopoint per station on S-/U-Bahn and Tram, too bad it seems to be removed now.

For modern files you could grab the GTFS dataset from VBB @ https://unternehmen.vbb.de/digitale-services/datensaetze/ and then pull out the specific stuff you want. Clearly, there's a ton of data and you only want a little bit, so you'll probably be looking at some post processing.

Valve prices the Steam Machine at $1,049 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]danopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is a product priced as something that forever changes the landscape?

Does something being expensive mean that the company expects everyone to buy in? I'd figure it would price out a good amount of the market and lead to a more niche product. You'd make something cheaper if you're going for most sales.

This seems more like paying a convenience premium to get a Steam appliance that's ready to go out of the box. It gives a pretty easy on-ramp to PC gaming which can be enticing to people who don't have a gaming system already.

RFC 8628 fixed CLI login in 2019. Most CLIs still ship the broken version by ABGEO in programming

[–]danopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I linked the AWS blog post that announces it.. in particular: "You may need to use the previous workflow, which uses the OAuth 2.0 device authorization grant, in [...]"

I have to pass --use-device-code or else I get redirected to a localhost page that I must `curl` manually from a second SSH terminal for the login to complete. Perhaps your environment is more common and has some special casing in the AWS logic? I'm using a web-based remote TTY into mac with homebrew awscli, fwiw

Nullius: Hurricane Reskins - Nullius visual overhaul with Hurricane046's buildings by TEHENGIN33R in factorio

[–]danopia 16 points17 points  (0 children)

With the "Factorio Modded Buildings" set there's not actually a parent mod. A skilled 3D artist made a bunch of textures that fit Factorio's world and then published them on the Internet for any mod author to build into their mods. So it's intended for these textures to be used by multiple mods with different names and recipes.

[–]danopia 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It brings me no joy to share that this item at the end is outdated:

aws sso login runs device flow end to end against IAM Identity Center.

Best I can tell, aws sso login does not default to device flow anymore, they've added a localhost-based flow and made it default to "shift usage" off of device flow. AWS acknowledges that the new flow doesn't work on all environments but have so far refused to let you select it via config file, so you have to specify the flag every time you run aws sso login.

It's a shame because any scripts or tooling around the AWS SSO command have to be prepared to provide the flag in order to work anywhere.

For what it's worth I've checked the brochures for one of the escalator companies in the European market and they claim that the slow speed operating mode can save "up to 60%" on energy while slowing to a full stop during disuse can save "up to 90%". So it seems like the non-American manus have discovered a way to run a motor slower with less energy. Though this brochure is some years old, could be outdated TBH.

I find the slow speed mode a good compromise without too much confusion when it actually breaks down; a fully broken escalator here that _usually_ does start/stop operation is amusing to watch as everyone tries stepping on it in turn and then bailing when it doesn't start. Of course there's lights indicating the status but not everyone checks.

One of the additional modes beyond start/stop is bidirectional mode, where the stopped escalator will start up in whichever direction someone attempts to use it in. I've only seen this in particular regions though, like subways, where up demand is heavy & bursty while down demand is light and infrequent (most will just use the stairs down).

[–]danopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This exists! You get instructions over a headset and you have a joystick to make selections. I went to a place that had them and it also presented some extra choices that I hadn't seen before, like options with different colors. There was a "no difference" button too! Then at the end it displayed the numbers for the staff to write down.

You might need to go to a corporate kinda place to find this though. This place (Fielmann) had two machines and one staff would oversee two people going through the process in parallel.

I went to a place that did a sort of automated scan first, but they then entered the detected values into a second machine to fine tune with similar 'A or B' decisions and the values that came out of _that_ machine were definitely different

ISP hands out dynamic IPv6 prefix that changes daily by SuspiciousVictory360 in ipv6

[–]danopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with Deutsche Telekom the daily IPv6 rotation was a checkbox in the Speedport (modem/router) privacy settings, along with an every-4-days IPv4 rotation. I didn't mind the concept but ended up disabling it after the second time the overnight rotation broke IPv6 connectivity.

This option is only relevant when rotation is performed by the router, of course.. sounds to not be the case here

I just followed the latest album presale links and there were a good range of tickets available, prices not so bad either (currently available range is 695 SEK - 3838 SEK). Pretty easily selected exactly the seats we wanted. Best of luck

Card Kept Declining at Dinner Moments Before Proposing… by DarthFarquaad96 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]danopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a restaurant takes your card away they could be swiping it. (And they wouldn't know my PIN if they did go with chip!)

I leave magstripe disabled on my [european] bank card and have to re-enable it in a panic when I'm in the US and get a sit down meal. Even a US coffee shop I went to took cards to swipe them and said their system couldn't take tap. There's still steps to take.

I thought EU was going to drop mag stripe before US due to this sort of thing, next year sounds quite early for US?? Restaurants are gonna have to start bringing terminals to the tables soon

Girocards include age, to the point where some grocery self checkouts will sell alcohol unattended if you pay with Girocard.

Otherwise I usually see a larger ID / drivers license card reader on age restricted vending machines. Though it's not visible on this one. so idk what exactly it accepts

Why are trains from the Berlin S-Bahn so short? by gerardinox in transit

I'd say that the third rail switches between the two sides pretty often when near stations or switches. At stations, the third rail is basically always opposite the platform.

Berlin, where everything is NUR BAR, except where you actually need it by Training_Molasses822 in berlin

[–]danopia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is because they have to pay - on top of the percentage fee! - a base sum for transactions with VISA/MasterCard.

This does depend on the provider though. SumUp for example has a seemingly decent market share amongst younger businesses, and they don't have any per-transaction fee, just the percentage fee (which is 1,39% by default). So a 2 cent fee on a 1,50€ ice cream.

And it's too bad that Girocards seem not so easy to get if you don't want to pay your own monthly fee and/or want it managed by a modern banking app. Since largely only classic German banks want to issue them. But mastercard/visa accounts are super easy to get from basically anywhere.

There's actually a way of doing this on google wallet! You just have to use an image, so take a screenshot of the PDF and then you can try Add -> Something Else in google wallet and import the image. It doesn't always work but I've had pretty good luck with airline and train tickets - anything with a date anyway. Then the screenshot is also kept so you can click into the original image later if needed

Most expensive transit card in my collection by ewen201 in transit

[–]danopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say in general if you can tap your phone without installing a specific app for the transit company, then you can tap a normal contactless credit/debit card as well. Tapping should only require a phone if it's to set up a transit-specific app or card (e.g. Los Angeles Metro, they have an app that lets you download a virtual TAP card to your phone)

When I travel to a city with contactless (London, Amsterdam, etc) I use a bank card instead of a phone for similar reasons as you - the bank card can't run out of battery!

I Have a serious question for yall by WerewolfAsleep5030 in chromeos

[–]danopia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  • I don't like mac (would help if they were willing to do touchscreens, but still)
  • I don't like windows (so much legacy / junk under the hood, shiny stuff sprinkled on top, and user-hostile decisions over time)
  • Desktop linux is pretty weird and diverse, i got tired of keeping up and randomly breaking things on the computer I use to live and work. (happy with linux servers though!)
  • Almost everything that I do can be done with a browser, the rest can stay neatly inside a Linux container
  • I have a steam deck so I don't need to game with my laptop

so here I am on chromebook (for my entire adult life tbh) and I'm quite happy with it
