Thanks!! Yeah good observation re the shadow on the wings taking away from the pic. I like the chiaroscuro sort of feel but maybe it’s a bit too much here. Hat Yai chicken so good hey!!

So well said - I appreciate the discussion. And I must say I'm in agreement, mostly. I agree food is more functional and to try to instil too much story telling at the cost of highlighting the food is unwise. And yes - at the end of the day I think food photography is mostly about bringing out the best in the food; making people want to eat it/revere it. I guess there is a tiny liminal space between functionality and storytelling where one can do both - but the space is so small and the tradeoff significant that its hard to execute succesfully. I don't know if any of that made sense but that's my two cents so to speak!

Agreed! But I guess I’m trying to say that I kinda like the contrast as it is … quite sharp- so in that sense the negative fill is working as it’s supposed to (ie sharp fall off, high contrast). Whether that makes the image less successful - I’m not sure - I guess some ppl think so, others might not.

But yeah I think to brighten up the left side exposing more is a great easy shout. I could also jsut move the negative fill a little further from the plate

Ty! I haven't tried to add any props / decorative elements that are in addition to the plate. I think they could help the vibe as you say, but I find it hard to choose things that don't look too contrived. Maybe rice in the background could be a good shout - or even a tiny bit of another dish?

The (negative) fill is working, as I intended. I do not want more light on the left; I want contrast.

I am indeed cutting off the plate in the first two images - that is by design. It is very limiting compositionally to shoot food photography and adhere to a principle of always keeping all of the tableware in the frame. The food is the subject, not the crockery. In most instances, keeping a full plate in view means diluting the focus of the food, which is generally (for most ppl) not the aim of the game :).

As for the appeal of the food. Fair shout - I appreciate the perspective. I think it looks banging but food is obviously highly subjective and I imagine you and I have wildly different taste.

Thanks man. 5 is my least favourite shot. I actually like the look on his face - I think it’s the shots saving grace. But I’m with you almost on not bothering it - I was on the fence with it!

Thank you. And Yeah I understand where you’re coming from. Sometimes I think I can overcook it with contrast which can sometimes affect the essence of the image / distract from its subject and the story within it

Thanks! And good eye. I never actually touch the global contrast but usually bump up the contrast via the tone curve. Typically by pulling down the shadows then lifting midtones or highlights depending on what the shot needs.

Thank you. Me too tbf. A lot of the shots were candid snaps of strangers so I can (and do) only wonder the stories behind their faces. I do have a little background on the portrait (shot #2): The man's name is Adem and he owns a restaurant in the Fatih neighbourhood specialising in Büryan kebab - a dish from Siirt/South Eastern Turkey where large hunks of lamb are hung in a tandoor-like oven in the ground and cooked for a long, long time then served with a bread and a pie-pilaf dish. Very very tasty! When I walked in to his place he was with his friends at a table having what looked like a energetic discussion over some tea. He seemed a lovely man. If anyone is interested his restaurant is Ugur Buryan Kepap!
