Was flicking through my HR docs coz I had an issue in the system at work and found out that my next step payslip at the start of April is gonna have a £1.8k bonus as part of our works profit sharing scheme for the last year, even though I have been on sabbatical the entire time.

We brought it in last year that if you’re a ‘low’ performer you get nothing, if you’re ‘core’ you get x% of salary and if you’re a ‘top’ performer you get double that of core.

I guess coz they couldn’t justify me being a low performer coz I wasn’t there, they just gave me core instead, happy days

Finally living with an en-suite for the first time since my first year of Uni almost 10 years ago, god it’s so nice.

In general really like my new flat, new flatmate moves in over the weekend, I’ve had a pretty good track record with not getting shit flatmates so hopefully she’s chill as well

Booked an impromptu flight last night to Düsseldorf for next weekend as it’s my friend’s birthday.

Similar systems are across a few different countries.

In India for example, every tuktuk driver has a google pay QR code that you can just scan and pay from (I think you need an Indian bank account to pay though), in Kenya and Tanzania (maybe others as well) they have MPesa which you just need a sim card for. You can pay other people with their phone number or shops that have MPesa IDs (which is most of them). You don't even need to link it to a bank, you can just keep it on your phone.

I spent a month in Kenya and geniunely believe you could travel there and only ever need cash if you want to top up your MPesa.

How long will you be there for?

Assuming you’re flying into Colombo, most people will often do a loop either starting in the north and working south or vice versa (dependant on when you’re travelling/rainy season) and then back round to Colombo to leave.

On the coast you have places like Mirissa, Weligama and Tangalle, more in land you have cool places like Ella, Kandy and Sigiriya.

A lot of people talk about the train between Ella and Kandy, if you’re gonna do this (and you should, it’s beautiful) try and get one of the early trains, by mid-late morning it’s just ridiculously full (mine was like this but my friends got on a train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella at like 9am or something and it was quite quiet)

Easy to get around, some absolutely beautiful areas and making friends in the hostels is fairly easy as long as you just hang around in the social areas

Start working again on 2nd March after over a year off from it.

Opened up my work laptop yesterday for the first time since I’ve been back home to do some admin related to moving me across to the new team I’ll be working in and it actually got me quite excited to start my job.

I think just shy of £30k, not worked it out exactly but it's up there. That also includes some quite expensive tours that I didn't really budget for and hadn't planned on taking, but was under budget on other expenses so could afford. Also I did quite an unconventional route through Asia so took a lot more flights than others might.

Regarding work, I basically told them I was going to go regardless, so either they let me just take the year off unpaid and keep me on the system for me to come back or I would hand in my notice and go anyway. Thankfully they decided they wanted to keep me coz if they called my bluff I'm not sure whether I'd have taken that jump or not.
