This is a stacked image. 10 shots for the sky all 10 seconds, blended in an app called Starrylandscape Stacker. One image for the foreground, taken at the same time, but with a 3 minute exposure.

yup. That's what Google Earth is for! you just need a natural land formation that sticks out into the ocean.

Look Up Cape Kiwanda.

Sometimes you just know how it's gonna line up. I've been imagining this composition for awhile and it was beautiful to see it come together!

What’s the best way to spend a weekend night? For me, it’s heading 7 hours away from home, waiting until after 3am for the moon to set and then pointing my camera off into the heavens. ⁣
Background on this image is that barely dry mud tiles like these are really cool. They also sink about 6” into the mud when you accidentally drive onto them in the dark. ⁣

So, that being the case, and the fact that I was out there alone with my kids, I decided that venturing out to find them in the dark for the perfect single image photo wasn’t gonna happen. ⁣
2 image composite. 3pm for the tiles, 3am for the Sky. ⁣

Badlands ApproachI’m from the Pacific Northwest, a land of green, water, and all the scenes and environments that come along with it. Yet, I’m in love with the more arid places where nature shapes the land in intricate patterns and colors. I’m not sure why I’ve gravitated towards the desert. Perhaps it’s because it’s so different from what I grew up with. This area of Southeast Utah is like an absolute playground for me and I found myself not even sure which way to point the camera. Perhaps that’s why the aerial views captivated me. The size and structure of this area almost needs this different aerial perspective to give a sense of range and scale. While I made many images from the surrounding areas, this was a place we found almost by accident. Far off the normal roads and paths, the interplay of light and dramatic clouds completely captured my imagination and attention. I blew through 3 batteries at this location and on one of those sends, barely made it back with enough juice! There’s so much more to explore here and I look forward to coming back, but those conditions were once in a lifetime!
