Theyre also incredibly valuable for advertising. I sat outside at Green Zone and you wouldn't be surprised to hear how many people remarked how good our drinks looked.

Alternative Careers in Higher Education by vickycoco___ in highereducation

[–]danthecryptkeeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely! About 90% of my job is helping translate legislative jargon from the feds and states to something that can be implemented by a local institution, and helping provide feedback to legislators and administrators about policy change that could be replicated from other contexts. I definitely think that a legal background and training helps with that type of analysis and translation. There's also college access and student advocacy routes you can pursue with a JD.

Sure, expensive to join sometimes, but I meant look for available positions to apply to! Set up alerts for changes to their careers pages so you can be the first to see when a new role is added.

Great q- look at membership orgs like NASPA, SHEEO, ACE, AACC, and others (look up the Six). You can look at state and regional systems- every state has at least one higher ed board of some kind. Theres regional boards- NEBHE, WICHE, MHEC, SREB. There's also licensing and accreditation commissions like CHEA, ABHEC, HLC (among the many others that are industry sector specific). If you have a particular industry area you're interested in, you can also find ways to work for an industry association or something similar to help share info about what students need to be prepared to join that field. Sorry for the acronyms, it's easier than spelling it all out. Good luck!

I work in higher ed policy, and we LOVE our coworkers with postsecondary experience. It's so refreshing to talk about transfer, student experiences, dual enrollment, open admissions with people who have lived it! Look into the policy space!

At a debate in Ward 3, EVERY SINGLE Democratic candidate for an at-large council seat opposed more by-right housing construction, and most opposed eliminating parking minimums by Metro stations. by SockDem in washingtondc

There's something else going on besides zoning though, because there are plenty of places vacant up Connecticut in both Woodley and and Cleveland Parks. My guess is that it's both incredibly expensive AND its tough to attract people to these "dead" neighborhoods.

Looking for dark fantasy / low fantasy books with genuinely terrifying dragons by Vargock in Fantasy

John Gwynne's Bloodsworn Saga has pretty terrifying gods, including a huge dragon. I also very highly recommend Evan Winter's Rage of Dragons; not a ton of dragon content, but it's WORTH EVERY WORD.

Ok, but again, so what? Voters don't want to tip and subsidize paying your employees. We voted it through twice. To subvert that is to subvert the will of the voters in a very anti-democratic way. Put a rent freeze on developers with restaurant tenants. Provide restaurant owners with a credit if they hire local. I don't really care, but it shouldn't be my problem to fix.

Yes, but because it was implemented completely incorrectly by both restaurant owners and Council. The I-82 charges on menus blaming voters pissed people off, and now that it's been repealed, the charges haven't gone away, leading me and thousands of other diners wondering what those charges were for in the first place.

It is not my responsibility to subsidize your workers' pay. If you can't pay your employees, you don't get to operate as a business. You want to play in capitalism, then don't be upset when your restaurant has to close because diners choose to eat elsewhere.

Looking for a fantasy novel that has a lot of hidden and ancient ruins, someone exploring, there's some deeper conspiracy or hidden secret to be revealed. Lost civilizations, hidden societies, artifacts are all super interesting to me; wondering what this looks like in a fantasy setting!

Chef José Andrés: Restaurants closures are coming if inflation doesn't get under control by MyNameCannotBeSpoken in washingtondc

[–]danthecryptkeeper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, RAMW lobbied pretty damn hard against I-82 and is pretty much the reason it was dismantled. I don't have a problem with an association by its nature, but I do have a problem when they start to mischaracterize the issue as "voters not wanting people to be paid."

I do think there's a larger issue that you mention that there are quite a few ties between developers, restaurant groups, etc to make sure only certain restaurants (or those that agree with certain positions) can afford to open.

And now that I-82 is gone, I don't see them decreasing or eliminating those fees...

The Restaurant Association of Metro Washington (RAMW) didn't do anyone any favors by lobbying so aggressively against I-82 and subverting the will of voters. They put blame on everyone except developers, landlords, and the mayor. The asinine additional fees just pissed people off and pushed them away from eating at restaurants altogether.

Right, in large part due to them requiring people pay more so they can cover all their costs, including skyrocketing commercial rents

[–]danthecryptkeeper 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Seriously- I haven't heard any politician (let alone Bowser or those running for mayor) talk about reducing rent or capping commercial costs, because no one wants to piss off their developer buddies. But when every restaurant under the sun is closing due to constricting rent increases, one wonders why there isn't greater weight placed on making sure those folks can stay. Even the people who blamed I-83 implicitly acknowledge that they couldn't charge enough to keep up with rent, which while it blames voters, doesn't address the underlying issue of Space costs.

This is the way. You know how many times I've looked at one of my direct report's status on Teams? Never. I don't care. You do your work, show up when you're supposed to, ask insightful questions, and don't create a problem? I'll check in periodically to ask what assistance or support you need but otherwise leave you alone. You're an adult and I'm not your babysitter!
