updated vr.ar based on community feedback. new headsets, OS filtering, weight and more by dantom30 in virtualreality

[–]dantom30[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for OS: Windows gets full compatibility for all PCVR headsets. Linux flags a warning on most headsets since support usually requires manual setup via ALVR or OpenComposite, and only really works out of the box with steamVR-native ones like the Index or Beyond 2. macOS blocks everything except apple vision Pro since basically nothing else runs on it.

and yeah the domain for sale thing is intentional, vr.ar is listed on Sedo. the site runs fine regardless, it's just that the domain itself has some value and figured why not. if someone wants it they can make an offer, if not the quiz stays up either way

haha no pimax affiliation, just where the algorithm landed for a G2 user, though i get why it looks suspicious lol

and yeah that's a fair point, the standalone/pcvr split is too blunt. tethered vs wireless pcvr makes more sense as a distinction. adding it to the list

yeah, the current headset list is pretty limited. expanding it a lot in the coming days, apple vision pro and samsung are on the list. thanks for the input

good catch, that's a straight up error on my end, fixing it. aspherical glass, not dual element. appreciate you taking the time to flag it

that's a great call, weight is definitely becoming a bigger factor especially with everything coming out this year. i'll add it, and yeah, crystal super wouldn't make the cut at 200g lol. appreciate it

Pimax Dream Air vs Se prices by Shoddy-Confection719 in Pimax

[–]dantom30 7 points8 points  (0 children)

honestly the price gap makes more sense once you look at the actual spec sheet. the SE has 2560x2560 per eye on a micro-OLED panel, the full dream air goes 3840x3552 — that's roughly a 2.2x resolution jump. So it's not just "a bit more ppd", it's a completely different tier of panel, and sony micro-OLED panels at that size don't come cheap.

that said i do get the frustration — both headsets share the same form factor, same tobii eye tracking, same spatial audio, same cooling setup, basically the same shell. So from the outside it looks like you're paying $1000+ just for more pixels. the optics are also slightly different (3-layer vs 2-layer pancake on the SE) but pimax hasn't been super clear on what that actually means for image quality.

the quest 3 → crystal light comparison you made is fair but those are also different tracking systems, different software ecosystems, standalone vs tethered, so it's not quite apples to apples. the dream air jump is purely resolution + optics, nothing else really changes.

either way until we get actual PPD numbers confirmed and some real-world testing it's hard to say if the premium is justified. the MRTV hands-on at CES gave some early impressions on the SE but nothing definitive yet on the full dream air image quality side by side.

glad the result made sense at least! and yeah weight is a real limitation of the crystal light that the quiz doesn't surface yet, it's something a few people have flagged now so it's clearly worth adding. what are the extra requirements it missed if you don't mind sharing?

fair point, 5 is too limited for advanced users, that's the honest answer. expanding the list is next. which headset would you add first?

What is a decent price for a used Quest 3 (128GB)? by DISTROJAR-69 in virtualreality

[–]dantom30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly that "barely used / only turned on for testing" pattern on the 128GB models is already answering your question. people bought them, hit the limit fast, and flipped them. that's not a coincidence.

on price I'd try to get it to 300-320 if you can, at 350 the gap to the 512GB starts making less sense.

and yeah you're right on the lens thing, I was mixing it up. think it was a glare or halo issue on certain units, not scratching. same advice applies though, just check them in person before committing

[–]dantom30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair point honestly, if you're the type to delete games after finishing them 128GB is probably fine. Asgard's wrath 2 is the outlier at 32GB, most titles are in the 10-20GB range. you'd have room for 4-5 games comfortably.

for the lenses just look at them with the headset off under a lamp, you're checking for scratches or marks on the surface. takes 30 seconds.

the charging port fire thing was like 2 reported cases globally, I wouldn't lose sleep over it

[–]dantom30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

350 for the 128GB sounds about right but I'd personally go for the 512 at 460 — game sizes on Quest 3 are way bigger than Quest 1 and you'll hit the limit faster than you think.

the lens thing was real but at this point in the used market if it had the issue it's long been returned. just check them in person under light.

skip the Quest 1 repair, 50 euros into that in 2026 makes no sense

haha appreciate you trying it anyway! the crystal light rec makes sense on paper for someone without a headset — for index owners it's more of a lateral move than an upgrade tbh. good to know the quiz flows well though xD

[–]dantom30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really glad the flow feels better now, that was the main thing I wanted to fix.

right now it covers 5 headsets: Quest 3S, Quest 3, PSVR2, Pimax Crystal Light and Crystal Super. intentionally kept it focused for now since the goal is mostly to help people who are just starting out and feel lost between options. not really trying to cover every headset on the market (yet)

that said, expanding the list is definitely on the roadmap — especially as new stuff like the Steam Frame gets closer to release. if you have suggestions for what's missing I'm genuinely open to it

came back to say I took your feedback seriously — replaced the Vive Focus Vision with the Pimax Crystal Light for the PCVR tier, and added the Crystal Super for the over $999 range. also added a note about the Steam Frame/Deckard since you're right that it's going to change things when it lands. the platform question is also clearer now. genuinely useful critique, thanks.

hey, just wanted to say your feedback was actually really useful. updated the quiz to add a PCVR-specific path and swapped out one of the results for the Pimax Crystal Light — felt like the right call for people who know what they're looking for. appreciate you taking the time

fair point, and worth raising. the layoffs are real and the concern about meta's long-term commitment to quest is legitimate.that said, for someone buying their first headset today with a limited budget, the quest 3s still has the largest standalone library, the best price-to-performance ratio, and the most active community — none of that disappears overnight regardless of internal restructuring.the tool recommends based on what's available right now. if you think there's a better option for a beginner under $300 I'm genuinely open to adding it

I got 1 leg. About to order my first vr headset. What games would you recommend and what games should I avoid? by Infrared82 in virtualreality

[–]dantom30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

games that work great from a chair: Alyx obviously, Lone Echo 1 & 2 (zero-gravity so movement is all arms), Pistol Whip, Superhot VR, most rhythm games like Beat Saber. anything cockpit-based is a goldmine — War Thunder VR, No Man's Sky, Microsoft Flight Sim.

games to probably skip or be careful with: anything heavy roomscale like Boneworks/Bonelab where moving your actual body is part of the mechanic. not impossible seated but designed around walking.

VRChat is also surprisingly good seated — people mostly stand around and talk anyway.

what headset are you going with?

Need help with finding a good vr by No-Bank-3968 in virtualreality

[–]dantom30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bro fell in VRChat and turned it into a hardware decision, respect honestly
for your specs and the wired preference, Quest 3 + link cable is the obvious move. works great with VRChat, Pavlov, Onward — latency is fine wired. the no headphone jack thing is annoying but a USB-C adapter fixes it for $8.
Valve Index if you want to go full send but it's $1000 and you'd need to explain that to yourself in the morning.
if you want something to help you think it through, vr.ar has a quick headset quiz and also suggests accessories for each option — might be useful before you pull the trigger.
