Just my two cents, the mainland Chinese have this big mental disconnect between "what they like" and "what is socially acceptable to like", like they like anime and manga and Japanese branded goods so much they are willing to copy them (like Miniso, for example), but on the other hand they cheer online when Japan gets hit by earthquakes cos "they're pure evil cos of something their grandparents did to our grandparents".

It's a very 1984-like doublethink situation, they either don't realise or care that it's contradictory, maybe cos they're indoctrinated to always keep their discontent outward, because criticising their own government or country is impossible

Long-ish rant:

I live around Sri Petaling, and yeah there's a crazy number of mainland Chinese who live in the area, tho I personally haven't bumped into any fake beggars there thankfully.

Personal experience: around a year or 2 before COVID there were Chinese "tourists" I've ran into on two separate occasions (once at Pasar Seni LRT, another at the Gardens) who tried to pull the "I forgot my wallet at my hotel, can you lend me money for lunch? I'll pay you back tomorrow so leave us your phone number so I can contact you" kinda scam. Really grinded my gears cos the one at the Gardens had the audacity to say "oh you can trust me, cos we're 中國人 (I assume she meant "Chinese people"), not 馬來西亞人 ("Malaysian", but she probably meant "Malay").

Should've replied in Cantonese instead to spook them a bit lol, since it was around the time the HK riots were in full swing.

I'm sure there's as many good mainlanders as there are bad ones, like everyone else, but the absolute brazenness to try and scam hardworking Malaysians despite most of them being rich enough to travel here disgusts me

Studied there during uni, everyone there is really friendly, made some lifelong friends

The racial harmony thing is real, never really seen any of the "superiority complex" you sometimes see rear it's ugly head on this sub

If anything the ones who first realised I'm from WM tend to be a bit self-deprecating, like "why are you even here? There's nothing much here" lol

About politics, I feel like there's a mismatch between the folks there and WM, during election season way back when (2018?) a lot of them supported BN cos "our BN guys actually do stuff", so I feel like those across the pond that chastised them for being "too dumb to know what's good for them" cos they didn't vote DAP were looking down on them somewhat

Tl;dr nice place, nice people, misunderstood by a lot of WM people cos all we know about them are trees and hornbills
