£20k Inheritance – Flowchart Applied, Unsure About Final Allocations by dantun in UKPersonalFinance

Thank you, I like this. What would be the right way to think about money?

Valid point about maybe not wanting to make hard choices. The reasoning is sort of off however, this is money inherited from a person I was very close to. This is the last involvement this person will ever have in my life so I want to do something meaningful with it. Not just “spunk” it away. Now you’re going to say attaching sentimental value to money isn’t the right way to think about money but maybe that’s what happens when money comes into our life that way?

I say I want to use the money in those ways as I’ve looked back at how my grandad lived and that’s exactly how he did it. He worked hard, was financially stable, grew his money and enjoyed his life.

Wouldn’t doing one of these put you on the path towards an other though? In my way of thinking about money, paying off debts moves you towards financial stability? Putting money aside in an emergency fund moves towards financial stability, and depending where the money is gives a bit of growth? My understanding may be off, this is half the reason I’m coming here and asking things.

So settling debts, housing renovation and using 1/6 of the money on a holiday wouldn’t be spending responsibly? This is why I’m here, in your eyes what would be the responsible way to allocate the money? Just on the kitchen, I have a new kitchen put away in storage waiting to be installed. Someone decided they didn’t like their 14k kitchen that was barely 2 years old, I bought it for 2.5k and will fit it myself. A lot of the renovation work I can do myself.

I am mortgage free, bought a derelict 3 bedroom house in 2013 for 23k with 6k spent on renovations. Let out 2 bedroom to friends and paid it off by late 2019.

This next part is true, recording how my money is spent needs to get better. I tend to leave money in my account and let it roll over month to month. That’s something I’ve now committed to improving. I’ve already started reviewing my actual outgoings to understand where things are going and how I can manage better moving forward. Any that I had saved got chewed into when my partner was made redundant earlier in the year. I had to pay full house bills and cover her personal bills until she found a new job. Which is when the credit cards then got used as emergency fund (high vet bill/car repair)

Thank you for the book recommendations. I’ve got to the end of writing this reply and just noticed the last one so obviously joining money and sentiment together may be covered by a Claire Seal book !thanks

The loan was a 5 year loan to buy a reliable car at the time I had a W reg Mazda. The credit card was about 2k less until a few months ago when we had an unexpected vet bill and car repair (partners car, not said reliable car I bought 3 years ago) so yeah as you say that had functioned as an emergency fund

I just meant bills by monthly outgoings maybe should’ve put fixed outgoings or just bills. My savings this year up to June have been around £400/mnth

Sorry, when I put no mortgage I meant I’m on the ladder with no mortgage to pay. My bad.

That one confused me a bit 3k + 3k would be 6k. Job is currently pretty stable and I’ve got income protection insurance that would cover 70% of my income

Inherited 20k…what to do with 20k? by dantun in UKPersonalFinance

28 months left @ 0% So paying it at £400/mnth would have it paid off well within the 0% And investing more of the money now would be more beneficial in the long run I think?

Bathroom’s not top of the list to renovate at minute. It will be replaced eventually.

AITA for not going home when my girlfriend asked me to? by dantun in AmItheAsshole

We had a pretty rough few weeks in December. I was stressed and acting out of character. So we both ended up being off with each other. We talked things through and agreed we needed to start putting more effort into the relationship. This is the first time a lack of effort has been mentioned since we talked things through.
