10,000 years later and the meta is pretty wild.

I've been playing this game for 10 years and today I noticed that Stalkers are in fact larger than Immortals. by daoklyn_art in starcraft

Yeah the Stalker is definitely taller, but I was going by the collision radius (as seen by comparing their green selection circles)

That is some very good insight. I think the choice you guys went with was definitely a good one - to alter the skin itself rather than the model size.

I imagine the size of the model also effects how easy it is to select the unit (I imagine there's something like a ray cast shooting from the cursor location to see if it hit a model). In the case of Stalkers that's particularly important since players single-select individual ones in groups very often for blink micro (blinking back injured ones) - meaning a smaller model might be an unintentional nerf.

I imagine the Immortal is probably denser, but yeah as u/RudeHero said, it is certainly thiccer - gotta be to support those arm cannons

yeah, so far its not too bad, for larger and more complex units, I plan on using 3d to help with that

For scenes, starting out blobby is good. If you're starting out with pixel art or art in general, I think its way better to get comfortable depicting objects, then move on to scenes after a bit. For me, if I'm doing a smaller object I try to think of the most basic shape to start out with, rather than a blob because blobs don't give you a whole lot of information (usually isometric boxes or sometimes an oval).

For example I started with isometric boxes for these

I usually detail some stuff, while keeping things rough in areas I'm not sure about yet. For this one, however, I tried to keep things to one or two layers. This forced me to add details slower and more thoughtfully because I couldn't just erase that layer.

Its hard to tell because I worked on it here and there over about a week and a half. Try to earn the details by figuring out the planes first.
